Title: Bad Weekend
Filename: badweek.xm
Posted Sat 13th Feb 1999
Rated 4 / 10
Decent melody, ok bass line, but the same old monotonous chord change that I've heard before and seen that...the only thing that saves this tune was a nice interlude in the middle leading to another idea before going back...even the loop around one of the samples continued looping and unless he wanted that, it doesn't fit in there at all. Good use of panning, and the samples were decent and fit to the tune ok. Not much else to say since there wasn't much else used...maybe the guy just had a bad weekend when he wrote this tune...who knows?

Right when I heard this tune, it immediately reminded me of a Role-Playing game tune. And that's exactly what it turned out to be. This tune could probably ft into one of them. Extensive use of woodwind instruments which are the hardest sounds to sample, and some hard kettle/bass drums. It actually sounded pretty nice and in tune ok. Note slides, cut offs and some nice varying tempos all completed this song. Considering the tempo at which it initially was at, a lot of pattern cuts had to be used, and it fit nicely along with some loops and a lot more in here. Either way it added some nice stuff to the song. If you're an RPG-type music fan, maybe check this one out....

1995, the beginning of this song tell me something. For a 4 channels, great work. It soft for listening with a cool beat. Many effects for a 4 channels (MOD) music. But no panning in that one... but nice mix from the right to left. 13 samples (8 bits), time : 2min 52sec

Nice melodic music. Cool use of guitar. Sound well except the end is very strange (Or original?) Seem to miss a note at the end ... Anyway, seem as a medieval music at the beggining. Do like it. Use of surround, cool stereo, but the panning in general is on left or right. For that kind of music you need more stereo and also a leveler because the instruments doesn't sound at their respective volume... But the harmonics sound great!

This music was done in 1985, with 4 channels so. But nice mix. It's remind me Mortal Kombat theme. Some samples are like them. The drumloop sample is used o.k. & the bass line is present. 1985 till now, we have exploded 4 channels up to 64 (And more) now. But there is cool slides down in that music. Nothing else.

Chiptunes are pretty much pure melody, since the samples are so simplistic and offer little variety. Luckily, Nighbeat pulls off a good chiptune by writing a catchy melody without being annoying. Good as far as chiptunes go, but not for everyone, especially if you can't stand bleeps and bloops. Like most chiptunes this had arpeggios present. One problem I noticed was the stereo effects. They were done by making one channel panned all the way left, the other all the way right, etc - this is rather common. Listening to this on high stereo seperation is quite an uncomfortable experience. Needless to say, more work should have gone into stereo (or Nightbeat should have just left it in mono). Other than that, a very good chip.

Musically Surreal is nothing special. It has a good melody, and pretty chord progression, but nothing extraordinary and nothing new. The melody does sound fitting to the chord progression, however.. credit must be given for that. Additionally, the ending of the song is an anticlimactic fadeout. Nevertheless, Norg creates some interesting (rather eerie, actually) ambience with Surreal. Like most of Norg's other songs, Surreal is orchestrated beautifully. The samples unseemingly fit together. My only complaint here is the volume of a chip sample (#4) - it overpowered the rest of the song, perhaps the global volume of the sample should have been lowered. Either way, it was very cool how Norg made a chip sample sound like a much higher quality one through use of echoes, envelopes, etc.

Nice remake of the classic. There is even a phone operator. This is super trippy, its fun to listen to. Much better than the downloaded MIDI versions. The tune is quick and annoying, just like Nintendo music. I like it! This song is 2:56 long. For some odd reason, the author used a phone operator in the song. All the samples are too short and old sounding. The low hum could have been much smoother. That same hum sounds off, but doesn't last. For all those Axel F fans, grab this one!

I believe this is a remake of a song heard in Final Fantasy 7. Although I have not played the game, or heard the song before, I believe this to be true from the information given by the author. This song sounds too much like a MIDI file, possibly because Final Fantasy 7 used MIDI as songs. Some of the samples needed to be cleaned up, quite a bit. It bothered me to hear the phantom sound and hear the pauses (since the sound is constantly being heard). There is even a frog sound, kinda cool. At the end of the song, there is a wavy effect, its pretty nice.

The mood of this song is slow and even, nothing surprising. Its very comfortable to listen to, no loud or annoying sections. Its almost hypnotic in the sense that it is so peaceful. Its been a long time since I've listened to such a nice composition... Great job! A very nice job by ACiD Bee. The samples were overall good, while some of them seemed to cut off a bit early. At about 4:40 into the song, you will hear a whistling person. I don't know for what purpose this was done, possibly something to create chaos in the closed system.

There is a cool intro in this music but after that some samples, not all, sound very "bizarre". But anyway, cool techno entrance here ! Time : 2min 52sec Need stereo here, no panning at all. Volume of some samples in pattern need to be reajusted. Samples need to be in 16 bits to be more clear, because they are at high and low frequence.

Although this mod is some basic construction, it never quite flops and holds itself to a generally listenable standard. There are some in interesting ideas started at 1:29 and sometimes I thought I was listening to a remix of spacedebris. Let me start out by saying although the guitar riff sounds like it came from somewhere, it did not. I know personally, all the sounds are original. Generally this song is technically coherent and use of effects are all acceptable.

This artist has succeeded in creating something happy and pleasing to the ears. It has a nice 'poppy' sound and is fun to listen to. The lead synth saxaphone is well articulated and sounds better than most songs out there. The samples were put together smoothly for the most part. But there were a few flaws, such as choppy sounds in the middle of the song that brought down its overall score a little. This artist knew what they were doing, and did a nice job.

This song has a great dance beat to it. Begining was real neat with the fade up into the melody and then the beat kicks in. Has the qualities of dance music and new age wrapped in one. Could see some of these parts being played in a club, many different melody's mixed. Samples are very good quality, really liked the beat and loved the spacey organ in the begining. Nice fades up and down in the song, and the kids voice in the begining is great. Wonderful job!

I have no clue what this dude was tryin to accomplish. With all the different forms of music used, it sound messy. Nothing except the beat mix with eachother. This song isn't nearly as good as other songs online, because it stinks. The vocals have no purpose in the song. I'm surpised the song has so many hits when I reviewed it. The beat is the only catchy thing to this song. The whole song is repetitive and disasterous. Being a reviewer, I listened to this song a couple times to figure it out. I still don't understand it and is permanently off my computer.

This song stinks. It could have been a lot better, but the beginning just kills it. Nothin in the beginning sound on tune. Same goes with 2 minutes into the song. I have no idea what Azo was trying to accomplish. It's nasty. Old sounding samples, quick song, with nothin relatively new. Parts of this song sound good, while the rest of it just plainly hurt the ears. It could have been better if different instruments were used. This song is 5:38, way too long.

This song is powerful. Azo uses the piano as a main instrument, with the appearance of the flute, strings, and other symphonic instruments. It doesn't sound to be a rip-off of any old Bach song, so originality comes into play here. I don't care much for this song. It bores me, but it is very quick and changes very often, so your ears don't explode. This is a long concerto, 8:43. I don't hear any effects used during the song, except the fade effect. Nothing special here, its supposed to sound Beethoven old.

This song is short, just over 3 minutes. It reminds me of the Medicine Man tune. The ending is really sudden, could have been much better. This is one of the songs you might hear during the beginning of a movie. Well done Azo! This song was written in 7/8 time, not 6/8 time. Azo pointed out how diffictult this was for him, exceeding build-time over 30 hours easily. We're fortunate to have risk takers out there, Azo being one of them. He took a risk with this song being so long to create (but being very well)

This song is way different than the others of Azo. He has created many songs, each with their own special bit. This song stands out from the others. With its eerie feeling and the unorganized sound, I like it. He uses electric guitars, I believe, and it only helps set the mood. All the lower frequencies were really quite. It appears to me that Azo was trying to accomplish the loud sound. Another large download so far being only 6:34 long. 32 samples, which lack quality (but I think Azo wanted it that way).

One of Azo's larger songs, an obvious masterpiece on his account. Very symphonic, good use of non-repetitiveness. It sounds beautiful. Azo changes the samples around to create the sense of newness, and it works. I'm definately impressed. This song is huge, but well worth the download. 21 samples and 5 minutes long. The quality is superb and the samples were finely tunes for this song. All the samples mix well with eachother. This song is overall very well done.

This song has a catchy tune, being an .s3m file, it'll be louder than those usual .it files. The beginning starts with a quick upbeat rhythm, but the song ends with a sudden clash of the symbols. The beat seems too hypnotic due to its fade effect and repetitiveness. This is not the best quality song online, but well worth the download. This song is 6:17. The samples used in the beginning of the song seem to transition very exotically. After 1:30, the song changes, with the introduction of some man's voice. This is common for Azo to use a vocal sample, but I can't make out what it says. No impressive low frequencies, not many higher frequencies, which makes for a good trance. You can hear the fade effect, but maybe its the sample. The file size is smaller for the amount of samples used. The beat stays the same throughout the song, only changing a couple times.

I really enjoyed this song, and this can almost go under the style of progressive rock. It opens up with a slow gutiar, the drums come in, and you hear the electric gutiar, then send it gets slighty heavy. Awesome song. The gutiar samples are sweet, and do are the drums, though I didnt like the cymbals. They seemed too short. Though the ride cymbal is sweet. Wonderful job tracking this.

Very interesting song, would suggest you download this one, just to let your hear how wierd this song is. Samples are good in this song. Special effects are pretty good as well. From looking at the title , you think it would sound like a dreamy type of song, well this is not. This song is weird, that is all I could say. It would be cool if the artist cut maybe half of the instruments. The song could have been better if the samples were a lot clearer. It is a little out of tempo in the begining. There are some neat special effects, though I think the song would have sound better with better samples, espicially the drums.

This song is very slow and peaceful, almost unreal. But Azo does such a good job with his songs, its hard to find something wrong with them. It repeats too often and is short, but maybe that good, since it goes by so slow. The last fourth of the song changed slightly, so its good to know he didn't just throw a quick song at us. Yet again, Azo has done a wonderful job on the samples. He has clear sounding samples with almost no clicking. I'm impressed. I feel the beat was too slow, even for being a seducive song. This is definately not Doom music.

Azo is a good tracker, who has made yet another beautiful composition. There is a mellow feeling to this. I was drawn into the calmness. There isn't anything bad about this song, except that maybe it is too short. All of the samples are developed well. He doesn't overuse effects, but instead uses them strategically. I like the part when the piano kicks in. I have noticed that one of the synthesized sounds is a little too choppy, but that's basically the only flaw. It almost sound like this could have been used in some sort of shooting game. But for freetime listening, I don't think so. The file is small, and it shows. This song is fun to listen to, but it grows old quickly. This song has a constant beat and a changing tune. It reminds me of an old Apple IIe game I used to play often, Laser Force. Its got that fast rhythm to it throughout the song, even the ending stays the same, up until about half a second before the songs ends, then it comes to a fade. These samples are really nice. They are computerized which adds to the techno feel of it. Good use of stereo effect. The samples seem to have an echo sound, which is really cool, but I'm dissappointed at the frequencies. There is no subwoofer enhanced samples, which is a let down.

Fable is a good all-around piano-trance kind of song. The melody that prevails throughout it is quite pretty, although it does get repetitive after the 12th time. The only real changes made to the basic melody are adding a few samples here and there, and raising the pitch a few notes. Still a good solid song, but nothing interested. Another note: There is a remix of this song (n-fable2.s3m), also by Nighbeat - a much better mix of the same song. Fable is arranged well, and although I haven't heard the Robert Miles original, I'll assume this is pretty close to it. The samples are good, and *gasp* the piano sample doesn't suck. The drums are a bit thick in places but overall make you want to dance. The biggest problem was the interlude; it was too long for simply a crescendo.

Santa Vs Mars starts off with some very good chord progression. The melody, however, becomes rather dull and never goes anywhere. It just fails to grab my attention. This is by no means a bad song; it simply does not have a good melody. This is where the song excels. It is is orchestrated excellently, using a full 32 channels (and you can tell). The drums were very good, and I considered them to be the highlight of the song. The samples did seem to be a bit random, and some of them - the melodic ones especially - were low quality. All in all, though, very good work in the technical department.
