Although it's just a tad too long, this song was an enjoyable one. The author managed to throw in enough variety to keep me interested throughout the entire song. It's a fairly basic synth tune, with fairly generic synth samples. However, the music itself was decent at the very least. I really like what was done with the chords in pattern 21 and the following patterns. Not only was it a nice change of pace during the song, but the chord progression was remarkably good. I do have a problem with the useage of sample 8, as the pitch slides made it sound very odd. For the most part, though, the technical side of things was good.

Considering the fact that this is a four-channel mod, I'd say this song sounded quite good, although I'm not a fan of the style. It did re-use patterns, but I was glad to see that it didn't do so to an excessive degree. The song itself is a fairly generic dance tune, so if you like that style, this song should be right up your alley. Very well-done. Samples chosen are basic dance-sounding samples. Most of the percussion is based off of the breakbeat that's provided in the sampleset. The vocal sample that was used seemed a tad odd to my ears, however.

A very slow-moving song, this one seems to be based entirely on the repetition of notes and patterns. Virtually every pattern is played two times in succession, and what's contained within them is not compelling in the slightest. Nothing interesting comes of this, leaving a very forgettable song behind. I have serious problems with the volume levels chosen for the samples. The most obvious offender is the hihat, which rides well above everything else that plays. In addition, the amount of bass with each beat causes a bit of distortion. The construction of the song itself is very simple, and nothing indicates that the author is beyond novice level.

It's decent, but it's still a below-average song for me. While it does sound fairly good for a mod, the music just didn't grab me. Maybe it's just the fact that it has the same theme playing the whole time and just adds new samples to the mix. I was fairly disappointed to see that much of the song was based on sequence samples, when it would have been extremely easy to track out those sequences in the "traditional" method. Otherwise, it's okay. Very simply done.

A thoroughly weak and boring song. There's not a whole lot I can say about this one musically. It starts out with a bassline, and then throws in other samples that play for a while, and then after a little less than two minutes, it ends. Ho-hum. Quite uninteresting, and not worth the download. This one certainly sounds like an older song. Very weak sampleset, and overly simple construction of the song.

As the author noted in his comments, this is a tribute to older 80's songs, and it definitely sounds like one. The song has a decent structure and a fairly good melody, and I'm also pleased that care was taken into keeping the song interesting and having a good intro and outtro. While it certainly wasn't the most compelling song in the world, it wasn't a bad listen. I have a few gripes here. First off, nothing in this song seemed perfectly in tune - it was particularly noticeable in the case of the lead, although many samples suffered for the same reason. That said, I also think that better choices could have been made for the sampleset. The lead wasn't extremely effective, a different sound may have improved the song overall. For the most part, though, it's well-structured.

What a burden to my ears this song was. I knew right from the start that this wasn't going to be a pleasant experience, and it wasn't. The song isn't musical in any way, it only seems like a series of random notes that were strewn together to produce something that's obnoxious to the extreme. This is certainly not a song that I'm going to be keeping. Was this song written with the sole purpose of damaging the ears? Or was it simply written by somebody who is a total stranger to tracking? The notes at some points (particularly the scales) seem to be randomly inserted into the song. Nothing really redeeming about this one.

Right off the bat, I must inform you all that this song is not for everyone. This is atonal rock music for the most part, although there are some jazzy bits in there as well. While not bad for its style, I must admit that I'm not a huge fan of atonal music, and thus didn't really enjoy this one. For what it's worth, however, it's a well-done piece of dischord, and those who appreciate that brand of music should be able to enjoy it. Fairly well-done, with lots of tempo changes and very odd time signatures throughout the song. A bit too loud for my tastes, however. The pianos don't sound very in tune, although for atonal music, that's irrelevant. Otherwise, the samples are of acceptable, but not extremely high quality.

The author makes it clear in the notes that this isn't a "serious" mod. Good thing he clarified that. I really need to learn to avoid songs that include the words "kick" and "ass" in the title. That aside, this song is very weak. There wasn't anything about it that interested me. This one was quite mediocre at its very best. Very simply constructed. Poor use of vocal samples, I thought - and in addition, they added little to the song. Everything about this was very basic.

I'm not very fond of the music of this song. It reminds me too much of Green Day and other such bands that I don't care for. While it's technically well-constructed, it just failed to grab me musically. I did like the way the ending of the song was handled, but I can't think of too much that I enjoyed from this. The technical side of things shows that the author does have an understanding of rock music and how to construct it. I don't like the generic guitar riff sample that was used. While it's simply made, it sounds like a rock song. Good work on the percussion.

The music itself isn't too bad, but it certainly isn't a compelling song. "Kick Ass" is a short heavy metal song, but it didn't have anything that I felt made it stand out. It sounds like virtually every other heavy metal mod I've heard. The ending is very, very weak, just leaving the looped samples playing until it finally cuts them off. Forgettable song. Nothing particularly innovative or outstanding on the technical side of things. The song is overly symmetrical, and it shows. All samples are played at 64 volume, so don't expect anything subtle from this song.

This song was certainly a very odd one. At times, it pays absolutely no heed to logical timing and just wings it. And you know what? I like that. It's a breath of fresh air. And in addition, I like what was done with the percussion. No snares in sight, mostly pounding rhythms on toms and other similar sounding percussion instruments. The leads really get wacky. At times this song sounds very garbled, but it's quite original, and rather enjoyable. Very interesting work in the technical department. I'm fairly sure that the author either went nuts to get the timing for everything in the proper place, or paid absolutely no attention to the timing. Whatever he did, it worked well. Very little use of stereo sound was made for this song, however. Quite a shame, as that could have really added a new dimension to it.

This is a very weak song. It's ten pounds of attitude in a five pound bag. It seems to be based on bass, drums, and vocal samples... which are repeated quite frequently. There's no real sense of melody to this song, just attitude. The novelty wears off after a few patterns, and the remainder of the song is just plain tiresome. The ending of the song is extremely abrupt, it suddenly cuts everything off and plays a few empty patterns at the end. Too much focus on vocals, and not enough music writing involved in this song. There's a very basic bassline, and the various pads that provide the actual music don't really work.

Fun! This is a very short, very amusing, and very unique piece of music. It's very rare that you hear a waltz in any mod format, and since this one was quite well-done, it was a treat to listen to. I've never heard a song by Heartbeat before, but judging by this song, he seems to know what he's doing. While this certainly isn't the greatest mod I've ever heard, it was certainly worth my time to download and listen to. I'm quite sure that the author has a good musical background, if the technical ability is any indication. This song is very well-structured and timed nicely. I particularly like the choice of samples. The chords, combined with the snare drum, gave the illusion of sounding like a guitar (at least to my ears). Great job.

Short little resonatic tune with beats. It is fairly well-done, and it has a pretty good rhythm to it. It's also quite a minimalist tune (although not nearly enough to be classified as chip). The percussion sounds good for this one, although I can't shake the feeling that I've heard that snare many times before. The length of this song (1:48) is probably very appropriate, as I don't know how much further this song could have gone. No ending, but at least it loops back to the beginning seamlessly. Fairly old and generic samples used in this song. Not too many effects were used for this, although they weren't really needed. There's not a whole lot I can say on this front. Decent samples, fairly well-written.

The introduction to this song is very interesting. It starts out with crowd noises, and then begins with a timpani rhythm (although the rhythm itself is fairly generic). It's also fairly unusual to hear a timpani in a breakbeat song. After that begins, the beats themselves kick in, and go over quite well. Unfortunately, there is very little melody in this song. It's more rhythm than music, which isn't my style of choice. Instrument 6 is what comes closest to creating a melody, but it only plays a G in the sixth octave, and never anything else. The rhythm for this song is good, but I was left wanting more in the end. Fairly good on the technical side of things. I should point out, though, that the author did not completely fade one of the looped samples that was playing at the end. It was hardly noticeable, but noticeable enough to be mentioned here. The author did an excellent job of creating breakbeats without actually using a drum loop sample, they were all created using individual samples for each drum. That's commendable.

Another short chip song, and I really liked this one. It's got a fun and original-sounding melody, with a "floating tempo" applied to give it character. I think this one could have been longer, as variations of the melody could easily have been written. This one is definitely worth checking out. Nicely done. Samples are well-chosen for this style of music, and structure of the song is quite good. The author did a nice job of tracking out the lead in this song, it does a very good job of complementing the rest of the song.

Yeah, it's a chip song. Yeah, it's short. But it's still fun to listen to. My only real complaint for this one is the lack of an ending (no care was taken in having a clean loop back to the beginning). Seeing as this one is so short, there's not a whole lot I can say. Just a fun little tune. I had to bring the tech rating slightly down because of the ending. Other than that, this one looks pretty good for its style. Samples are appropriately chosen and structure seems to work well.

I was at a loss trying to figure out how to classify this song, I just left it at "synth". It's a song for a one-hour compo, and although it is quite chaotic, I enjoyed it somewhat. The main synth that plays sounds quite odd. I particularly enjoy the work that was done with the bass and percussion. However, the high-end lead is quite annoying. And, at points, this song gets just a bit TOO chaotic for my tastes, with so many different samples playing at once. I think the biggest technical flaw that this one has is that there are points where this song is too "busy". There's only so many different sounds I can stand hearing at once, and this one plays just a bit too many. Also, a few samples (the lead in particular) are played well out of their range, and this doesn't sound particularly good.

This is certainly not the best piece of music Maz has written, but it was decent. It's a fairly short, calm synth piece. The bass guitar and pad samples work well for this style of music. I also like the chords in this, despite it being very simple progression. The piano, however, sounded out of place in this song. This is a fairly good song, but not incredibly memorable. For the most part, the technical side of things is quite good. Volume leveling and panning are spot on, so I have no complaints there. I do have two small complaints. The first is with the choice of piano samples: this one just didn't fit into the song. Playing it an octave higher would have helped a bit, I think. The other complaint is that the way the song ends sounds quite odd, playing on a note that makes the ending sound very awkward. However, those are the only real technical complaints I have.

The final piece of music from this particular game on the mod archive. Seeing as it's the music for the credits, it's a much more subdued piece. It works fairly well, and does what it's supposed to, in providing a more subtle theme to play during the closing credits. Not spectacular, but listenable. This one is very, very quiet in comparison to the other pieces of music from this game. Remainder of the technical aspect remains the same: very simple and to the point. As is the norm with game music, this one loops back to an earlier point rather than having an ending to the song.

Another piece of game music. This one had a great introduction, I thought. It drew me into the tune. The main theme of the song left me rather disappointed, however. It's not that it was bad, but there was just something about it that seemed uninteresting. The song also emphasizes vocal samples just a bit too much. There's no ending, but a loopback... however, since this is game music, that's to be expected. Arpeggios on a certain sample should have used the Gxx effect to make them sound more smooth (this is in patterns 9 and 12). For the most part, this is well-constructed, particularly in the intro. Very good use of the limited channels at that point.

This one struck me as an oddity: an actual piece of music made for a game (judging by the title, to be played during the actual gameplay) that had an ending. Usually these are simply looped back to an earlier point. Anyway, as for the song itself, it's alright - it does get a little old after a while, but hey, this is game music, and not really intended to be listened to casually. Being an older song (written in 1990), the sampleset isn't very impressive. Musical structure is very basic, and there is little variance. However, there were some changes in the tempo, which is always a welcome change of pace if done correctly. It did seem abrupt where it was implemented, however.

While the author does have a good sense of melody, I found this song to be thorougly boring and too long. Almost every pattern was repeated once (and some more often than that). Why repeat the patterns for seven and a half minutes when you can cut the length down to under five without boring the audience? This is a rock song that just didn't have any meat to it, if that makes any sense. Having a bass guitar in there would have fleshed things out a great deal, but there was none to be found. The choice of samples left a great deal to be desired as well: the guitar samples are older ones that have been used quite a bit. A bit too conservative to be a succesful rock song, if you ask me. Samples, as I mentioned, are very old and overused. The patterns themselves aren't very interesting, sounding like the basics of rock and little else. I think what really killed this for me was the overly simple melody, which never varied at all. I noticed no changes in key or tempo, and nothing that went off from the main theme. Just a lot of the same stuff.

For a four channel demo mod, this was very good, and one of the better songs in this format that I've been able to review. It is an older song (from 1993), but it's aged well, as I thoroughly enjoyed it. I particularly like the resonatic samples and the rather unique-sounding lead. Also, add to the fact that this song has an ending (which it kinda had to have, being a song from an actual demo), which is always satisfying to hear. Good song, overall. Excellent use of channels. Even though there were only four channels, the samples were very well-chosen to provide a much more full sound. Good use of echoing as well. Effects throughout the song were implemented nicely, and didn't detract from the feel of the song.

The introduction is interesting, to say the least. It had me fooled into thinking I would be hearing something original. Once the bass and percussion kicked in, I thought that this song had potential. And then came the generic dance percussion samples, and my hopes were shattered. The flute lead was a fairly unique touch, but this song just plain didn't work for me. And the fact that there was no ending in sight made it worse. It had some good ideas, but failed to capitalize on them. On the technical side of things, it's not very impressive. Samples were very basic, and in the case of the percussion samples, overly generic. The weird synth chord thing in the beginning could have had a lot more effect had you echoed it. As it is, it doesn't sound very compelling. And an ending to the song would have been nice.

Immediately when I heard the intro, I knew this was yet another generic dance tune (written for a 1 hour compo, apparently). After having reviewed a dance tune that was actually decent (entitled "Townspeople" for those who are interested), this one seemed incredibly generic. Doesn't really offer anything interesting, with the exception of the fairly well-done guitar leads in the middle of the song. Ends the song by fading out, which is one of my least favorite ways of ending the song. The main synth sample is very, very flat. It's noticeable throughout the entire song whenever it plays, and it's very distracting. The transitions need work, it appears as though when the author wanted to quiet everything down, he just cut everything that he didn't want to play anymore, when fading would have made it much smoother.

Eh. Right from the start, I knew exactly how the flute-like samples were going to progress. Not a very enjoyable tune, and certainly not one that I'm going to keep. It's predictable right up until the end, where the chords suddenly get really funky and weird. Also, there's no ending at all to this song. The vibrato effects were used very liberally in this song, to the point of everything having a hideously annoying warble to it. There's no detectable ending, which means it loops back to the beginning without any sort of segue whatsoever. Very shoddily put-together.

In spite of it being a dance song, I was able to enjoy this one. It did a few things that I liked that I haven't heard much of in dance tunes, such as one bit where there was no percussion playing at all - quite refreshing. On the other hand, it used the same old percussion samples that you hear in every dance song. I was also disappointed to see that some of the better parts of the song were achieved through the use of sequence samples (unless the author made these samples himself). All in all, better than the average dance tune. EXTREMELY well done on the technical side of things. Again, I was disappointed that sequences were used, but I'll overlook that for now, as they did provide good sound. The samples sounded great, and worked well. Good job of panning things out throughout the song also. It's not the most immersive use of stereo sound that I've heard, but it worked quite well.

A bit on the repetetive side, but with ambient music, repetition is slightly easier for me to look over (interestingly enough). It has a very unique sound about it, and ends well. Good choice of samples, although the main synth strings sounded a bit muffled. VERY odd chord progression in this one. The introduction of this song is less than compelling. Fortunately, it gets better after that. Throughout the tune, it manages to be very listenable, in spite of being somewhat overdriven. Good variety throughout. However, I do have problems with the way it ended. First off, the sudden shift in tempo and theme is incredibly awkward, and just doesn't work. Secondly, I hate, hate, hate it when the ending is just a fadeout (the only things worse than that being a looped song and no ending at all). And finally, the ending theme seems to have nothing to do whatsoever with the rest of the song, and just sounds bad. I was going to give the song a 7.5, but the ending dropped that down a point. The use of stereo panning for this song gives it a nice, full sound. Good use of channels throughout. The song sounds overdriven, the volume could stand to be lowered. Again, I couldn't stand the ending, and the transition was especially choppy. Samples sound decent.

There was music involved in this one? There certainly wasn't any melody. Just a grating acid beat that played for half a minute and then repeated the final pattern ad nauseum. There was nothing musical about this. It was hideously annoying, plain and simple. While the structure isn't bad, the author doesn't really show any real ability to use the technical aspect to his advantage. The final pattern uses the SBx effect in combination with a Wxx at the end to keep repeating the pattern, and slowly fade it out. Very lazy way of ending the song.

The first thing I should point out about this song is that it is LOUD. Very, very loud. It's mostly based on the traditional dance formula, using resonatic samples that pan all over the place, and a very basic percussion line (using those dance percussion samples that I get so sick of). It does manage to keep things interesting throughout the song, but overall, it's nothing particularly memorable or outstanding. Too loud. Much too loud for my tastes. I think the panning for the resonatic samples also could have been toned down a bit, going from the extreme left to extreme right and back again was rather jarring. Also, the author needs to make sure all of the samples are perfectly in tune, as the piano sounded just a bit off.

It certainly has an interesting concept. It begins with just the "sinewave" sample playing very quickly, cycling through notes. There's no percussion, just the echoing sinewave, a bass, and whatever other instrument takes the lead. Occasionally the sinewave stops and allows chords to play. It's quite short, but not a bad song. I liked the fact that there was no percussion to this one, making it stand out somewhat. Very low-quality samples, however, this is an older song. Using only four channels, the author sacrificed adding another instrument into the mix in lieu of adding an echo effect. Good changes of pace throughout the piece.

This song had me right from the start. It's one of the best introductions I've heard, it totally drew me into the song and made me want to listen to the rest of it. Simply put, this song kicks some serious bippy. It never gets old. It's got a part where the piano leads, where a panpipe leads, and where a synth leads. It's got variety, it's got great percussion, and all in all, it's just great to listen to. It even has a good (albeit somewhat abrupt) ending. This is one of the best songs I've had the pleasure of reviewing on the Mod Archive. Highly recommended. EXCELLENT job of stereo panning, particularly with the percussion. It has great directionality throughout. Also, the samples are of superb quality, none really stood out. They all blended together extremely well. The only problem I had with it was that the chords were just a tad too loud, and I thought they overpowered the great percussion. But beyond that, I have no complaints.

While this one certainly isn't bad, it seems like a rehash of an old formula to me. The song is nearly five minutes long, and the author consistently revisits old material. It gets old and tiresome after a few minutes of listening. At least it doesn't exhibit the same amount of repetition as other works by the same author. Good use of chord samples. The sample choice in this regard give the song a very full sound to it. The samples are of fairly low quality, but they work well given the material. A better way of ending rather than an abrupt stop would have been welcome, although what's there is better than nothing at all.

This song begins with a very simple bass introduction, and begins to progress into a more demo-styled song by adding synth strings, percussion, and a distorted plucked-guitar lead. What annoys me about this song is the main theme, mostly because it plays the same theme over and over again for the remaining four minutes of the song once the theme kicks in. It's ridiculously annoying. If it's this guy's first song, it's a very strong start. But the song itself isn't that great. Makes good use of chord samples to create some decent progression. Like this author's other mod files, he makes good use of the limited four channels. Samples sound okay, some of them are of lower quality, but I've come to expect that of four channel mod files.

The introduction was very unusual. There were two snares, and then complete silence... and then suddenly, it jumped into the song. Very abrupt, and could have been improved. The song itself is quite good for a mod, the sound of it makes it seem as though there's more than four channels. It is a bit too long, I think it could have been three minutes or so without resorting to repeating the patterns as often as it does. Also, the ending seemed very sudden to me, but at least it was an ending. The author accomplishes some very good sound using only four channels. While the samples aren't the best I've ever heard, their implementation is quite well-done. The chord progression is particularly good. The slap bass sample used also seems to mesh very well with the bass sample used.

This is a remix of what apparently is an ordinary dance tune. I like the way the piano works in this one. I also appreciate the fact that there was some variety in this one, rather than repeating the same thing over and over and over again. However, this song really didn't stand out for me. It's rare that I really enjoy a dance or house song, and this one sounds a bit too generic for my tastes. I also would have preferred a different way of ending the song - while a fadeout isn't as bad as looping back to an earlier point and having no ending at all, it's not a very satisfying way of ending. For the most part, this is very well-put together. Good overall use of channels and implementation. There was something that didn't sound right about the piano, however. I believe it sounded just a bit flat. For the most part, the pacing of this track was quite good.
