This is one song that gives no indication of how it's going to end when you start listening to it. The sample that plays at the beginning makes it seem all happy, but it gets serious as the song progresses. The author does a good job of keeping the song progressing, without resorting to revisiting old material. Also, the song has a real ending, which is always nice to hear. Great work on the percussion samples, particularly near the end, at the slower part. While the samples themselves aren't of the highest quality, the use of them is well-done. This song does a good job of keeping a decent sound while only using four channels.

This song begins with a basic percussion instrumental, with the bassline coming in after a bit. The chord progression works well for the song, but I didn't particularly care for the arpeggios used, as they were way too loud and overpowered the song. This song IS fortunately able to go through some variances, and thus stays away from the tedium that many songs exhibit. I kinda wish there had been more patterns to it, though. Taking a look at it, just about every pattern was repeated two or three times. Also, there's no proper ending to this song, which is something that I always find annoying. Average song. Given the resources, this song does fairly well on the technical side of things. I already expressed my distaste for the arpeggios. The sampleset isn't too bad. It includes piano and synth chords, both of which are nicely used in this song. The author clearly exhibits technical skill, but not quite enough to make this into a truly memorable song.

Alrighty, this one was a slightly longer one (six and a half minutes) and was fairly good. While this style is by no means my favorite, this was a well-made track. It certainly had enough variety to keep my interest throughout, instead of simply playing the exact same pattern. I should point out that I found the lead slightly annoying, however. And fortunately, this song had a proper ending. This song is very well-structured. Samples appear to be of good quality, although I had a problem with the lead. It sounded out of tune, just a tad flat. Also, I ought to point out that this song was unable to load in Impulse Tracker, which is what I normally use to initially listen to songs as I review them.

This one is pretty much a typical old demo song the whole way through (yes, the whole minute that this song lasts). While not bad, it's very obviously unfinished, as it cuts off immediately one pattern after the lead kicks in. This is what killed it for me, otherwise it would have had a slightly higher score. It's definitely not unlistenable, I really found nothing annoying about it (except for the obvious lack of completion). Simply put, it needed to be finished. On the technical side of things, this song doesn't have a whole lot to offer. It's a fairly basic demo mix, spread over four channels. It has the typical setup of bass on one line, drums on another, synth on another and looped sample on the last. Nothing particularly remarkable, but nothing bad, either.

Why write music when you can let the samples do it for you? Apparently, that's the author's philosophy regarding this piece, as very little effort seems to have gone into it. It's driven entirely by two sequences and a few vocal samples (one of which, of course, says "Keep bustin'"). There's absolutely nothing interesting about this piece. However, it DOES have one thing going for it: It's the first song I've heard in the last five or ten that actually had a PROPER ENDING! What a concept! Of course, that's probably the only positive thing I can say about this song, unfortunately. Not too much I can say about the technical aspect of this song. It's entirely sample-driven, so the author didn't really show any tracking skill in getting this tune finished.

While the track itself is well-done (which I'll cover in the technical section) I didn't care for it musically. It seems just like another house tune, going through the motions. And to top it off, there's no ending whatsoever. The basic house samples used here are getting old, if you ask me, and I'd like to hear less of them. This song is a good attempt, but it's just not to my liking. Technically, it's very well-done. Many channels were used, which provides for much greater depth. The samples were of good quality, in spite of the percussion samples being excessively generic. Instruments were also well-implemented. I like the way the synth samples were used, employing tone portamentos to keep the sequence going.

The melody, in and of itself, is not that bad at all. What urks me about this song is that there's no change from the melody at all. It plays the same bassline throughout. In addition to that, there was no ending whatsoever, a trend that I've been noticing a great deal recently. Had there been a bit more variety to this song, it would have a higher score, but alas - such is not to be. Makes good use of echoing effects throughout the song. However, I wasn't very fond of the use of arpeggios, which I felt added nothing of value to the song. The song was not concluded, it didn't even provide a clean loop back to an earlier point, and thus, when it goes back to the beginning, any samples left playing continue playing.

This is Kecke's first completed mod (although, since there's no ending, it doesn't sound complete to me). It's a cover tune, but the original song and group is given proper credit (Alphaville/Big in Japan). It uses a very basic bassline and a typical house-style drumbeat, along with a low-quality chip lead. And it repeats it for three and a half minutes. This IS the author's first song, so I'm willing to cut him some slack on this one. Again, since it's his first song (and, more importantly, that I'm aware of it), I won't be too harsh here. It uses a very basic structure for the patterns, and uses samples (particularly that one hihat that you hear in every house tune) that have been used way too much. Having a proper ending for the song would have helped, since all the samples bleed over to the beginning of the song once it loops back.

I listened to it first in Impulse Tracker, and I immediately had to turn down the volume. This one just blares out. It's a typical transfusion of a game track, which means that it's fairly short and loops back to an earlier point. I can't say that I care for it, either. Too noisy. Like I said before, this one is loud. Way too loud, even. All the samples are played at the maximum volume, and they're not very high quality. Structure of patterns is very, very basic.

This is definitely a chirpy, happy little piece. It's quite short, and not spectacularly interesting, either. Although it's a 4/4 piece, there's quite a few triplets in there. The transitions for this song seem very abrupt, and more work could go into making the transitions more smooth. While not bad, this song just didn't provide enough for me to be able to enjoy it. Also, it had a fade-out instead of a proper ending (which, granted, is better than having it loop back to an earlier point in the song). Average, at best. The patterns are all of a length of 48, but the song has a 4/4 time signature. This was done to make the triplets sound better, and it does work, so I upped the technical score slightly. The volume is a bit loud, particularly when I listen in Impulse Tracker.

Well, there's SOMETHING that resembles music in this mod, but it's hard to find. While musically, this song isn't very good, it makes up for it by being VERY VERY LOUD. It's basically just a bunch of samples that were thrown together to make a tune. I can't really think of any redeeming qualities regarding this one. It's no better technically than it was musically. Samples are all played at full blast, making the whole thing ridiculously loud. I can't find much in terms of musical structure, it's just a bunch of notes.

Urgh. I found it difficult to listen to. The melody is ridiculously annoying, and grated on my ear. The lead sample was especially irritating. And it doesn't stop there, as this one just keeps on going and going and going, without ever becoming less annoying. And to add insult to injury, there's no ending, it just loops back to an earlier point. The author doesn't seem to know how to use vibrato to his advantage. In this case, he overuses it, and the depth of the vibrato brings it to a point of near cacophony. I didn't think much of the use of the arpeggios, either. The lead sample could have been different...something that doesn't sound as bad as this one does.

It's not much to listen to. It sounds like something that they would play on the loudspeakers during a baseball game that the crowd would clap to...only done with chip samples instead of an organ. Quite short, and not very notable. The song progresssively gets faster as it goes, and the author does a good job of getting it to gradually speed up. However, that's about all the praise I'm going to give this one technically, as everything else about it seemed very unremarkable.

A more complete title for this song would have been "Steel: An Excercise in Loud Repetition". And that's exactly what it was. There was no introduction, it just started playing REALLY REALLY LOUD. There was no ending, either. And now that I think about, there was no melody, so all the fundamentals of a good song were missing from this one. Just extremely loud percussion and acid samples playing for the duration. It seems like this entire song was written using sequences. It's the samples writing the song and not the author. The result? An extremely weak song that's basically just the sequences repeating for two and a half minutes. No real technical skill at all was demonstrated in this.

This song rocks! It had me right from the beginning with the introduction. It manages to keep the main synth theme that plays in the background, but keeps it interesting by branching off of the theme. It also has a satisfying ending, which is something I haven't noticed much of with many of the songs I've reviewed. And yes, I am able to forgive the lame way that the title is spelt. Very recommended. I'm very hard-pressed to find anything technically wrong with this song. Okay, I think the lead is just a TAD too loud, but only just a little. Samples sound great, and the structure of the music itself is very professional. Kudos to KB for writing one of the best songs I've heard in quite a while.

Well, it's definitely not my style, but at least it's well-made. It's a typical breakbeat song with the focus being on the percussion, with some good use of acid samples and some sound effects thrown in. However, this style is simply not one that I am able to enjoy much. Good technical job on this one. The samples, being dominated by percussion, are of good quality and work well for the material provided. The song makes an overall good use of the samples and works well with envelopes and other such related advantages of instruments.

Eh. This one leaves a lot to be desired. It starts out with some guy laughing (what was the point of that, by the way?) and then begins as a very generic house tune. It's a very basic house tune and not much more than that. Does it have to use the same percussion line that every other house tune ever made uses? Also, the tempo change near the end was very awkward and out of place. Why was this song in IT format? It didn't even use instruments. Anyway, technically, I have my usual gripes over this style of song: Uses the same samples I've heard hundreds of times, the percussion lines in the patterns look like a chessboard in their oversimplicity, and so on. An echoing effect would have worked well for the piano, but was not used.

Quite excellent. The sound produced here is a fairly standard synth tune, but it's extremely well done. It has a good introduction, and a satisfying ending, and it's a good length. The song kept me interested throughout the duration of the track. I especially liked the use of the "acid" samples, while a common thing in mods, they sounded quite good here. Excellent choice of samples, all of them sounded great and were of extremely high quality. The author made good use of envelopes to produce a great deal of depth throughout. Effects were also well implemented in this song. The last sample sounds a bit odd, but it works.

It wasn't unlistenable, but it was close. This is an extremely generic dance song, and like many others I've heard, it doesn't go anywhere. Songs of this type could certainly stand to have a little variety, but none was present. It sounds exactly like a dozen other dance songs I've heard, and it certainly didn't stand out. The samples sounded very, very bad. And, to make matters worse, they didn't seem in tune, which was very annoying to the ear. The song is plagued with lack of variety, and by looking at the patterns, I see no real technical skill applied here.

I have NO idea how to classify this song, so I'll just classify it as "goofy", and that's exactly what it is. This song is very bouncy and chirpy, and has a strange melody. However, I found it very enjoyable to listen to. The melody itself is quite original. And better still, it doesn't stick to the same melody the whole time, but has some variations. It even ends well. This song is definitely a lot of fun. For a four channel mod, this one is extremely well done. Samples sound good, none with any real technical problems. The composer did an excellent job of structuring the channels, making sure each one was used to its fullest potential. The skill of the song structure and chord progression itself is also very, very good.

This sounds like a song that would play in a detective movie. Quite short, with a decent melody, and a style that you don't normally hear in mod music. It isn't much, but it's enough to keep me interested throughout the song. The ending seems a bit too abrupt, however, more work should go into providing a good ending to the song. Uses a floating tempo to its advantage. Using only four channels, this song is able to produce decent sound. The saxophone sample used in this song doesn't sound right, however. It's played in a higher frequency than it should, at points, making it sound odd. Good use of effects interspersed throughout this song. I like sample 5, by the way.

Thorougly uninteresting. It starts out with a bassline which basically continues, not varying from its original theme in any way. A lead comes in there, and then later on a different sample takes the lead over, but it's nothing that makes the song interesting. Add to that the fact that there's no ending (it loops back to an earlier point in the mod) and you've got yourself a mediocre track. Overly simplistic and symmetrical, with no effects used. Since it's a mod, it's limited to four channels, but the use of these channels was not implemented very well. At times, three of these channels would be occupied by percussion samples (these could have been consolidated into one or two channels). Samples are old and overused.

This is a very short, simple song using mostly synth-style samples. To tell the truth, the generic dance percussion are getting unbelievably tiresome. This song doesn't go anywhere, and even at less than two minutes, it gets old very quickly. The strings didn't sound quite right, somewhat out of tune. The samples, while they don't sound bad, are very generic and aren't really enough to provide anything interesting for this song. Pattern structure is very simple and symetrical.

And we're on a roll, that's two songs in a row (along with kaosxmas.it) that I've enjoyed. This one is a mod, and a very old-sounding one at that, but it manages to have a good melody. I enjoyed listening to it. I particularly like the way that the leads were used. It's short, but it doesn't hold to one melody the entire time, throwing in some variances to keep it interesting. I especially like the way the ending was handled, at about 2:13 through the song until the end. This has a healthy number of samples, and they're not particularly of groundbreaking quality. However, the fact that these samples were actually well-used made the song enjoyable for me. Nice blending of channels throughout the song to make full use of the limited resources.

Okay, yes, I am aware that Jester has written a lot of good tunes, and I'm sure that many people will like this track, and I thought that "Stardust Memories" was an absolute classic... but "Kamasutra" simply did not work for me. The variance in pitch on the sitar samples practically drove me insane. The rest of the song was fine, really, although the lack of an ending made me take the score down a bit. Why oh why did he choose the pitch slides? They were so blatant, they hurt the song. The samples themselves were of decent quality. I felt that the echo effects used in this song were just a bit too much, toning that down a bit would have helped. Patterns themselves are well-constructed, at least.

Yawn. This one definitely did not capture my interest for one moment. It's really not bad, but thoroughly uninteresting. What really killed it for me was the lack of variety. It uses very standard house samples, and follows a very standard house theme. No key changes, tempo changes, variance of any sort. Just boring, symetrical, house music. The author is able to make good use of the bass line to create an echo effect. I can't say a whole lot for the choice of samples, as many of them are some of the most overused samples of all time (I refer specifically to the percussion samples). Nothing particularly stands out technically for this song.

It did manage to do something that annoys me to no end, however: instead of having a proper ending, it just loops back to the beginning of a song. However, this is at least an average chip tune. The song makes a very minimalist approach, it's simple even for chip. The bass line is very simplistic, and has a very quiet drumline. Samples are all 8 bit with low frequency, although that's not really an issue with chip. EDIT: Fixed up the artist name and directory in this review.

For what it's worth, the sound itself is decent. It gets very tiresome after a little while, as it's almost thirteen minutes long. Sample 30 (in Modplug) is INCREDIBLY annoying and very much overused. I certainly can't complain about the technical section, as it's very good. Interesting...this one seems to be chip, but with high-quality percussion samples thrown in. An odd combination. Fortunately, it has a decent melody, and is listenable. Of course, it commits the unforgiveable sin: there's no ending. It just loops back to the beginning. Actually, now that I think about it, there's no middle, either. It sounds like an intro to a longer song, but then it ends. The lead that plays in pattern 6 is irritating. Something other than pitch slides should have been used to change the note...perhaps the Gxx effect rather than Exx or Fxx. In the end, however, this is a decent tune that I'm sure can be enjoyed by many. There's a mixture of chip samples and "normal" samples, so to speak. The percussion sample and the "whoosh" sound effect are of very good quality. Panning was minimal throughout the song, although some stereo effects were used. I think the lead in pattern 6 was too loud. The volume that it's at made it too shrill, and I was rather annoyed by it.

The lead worked out very well, and the arpeggio effects also really added to the song (frequently people don't really know how to use arpeggios when they attempt to, but it worked here). Definitely catchy, but certainly not groundbreaking. As I said in the music rating, the arpeggios were quite effective. One of the better chip tunes I've heard recently (then again, the competition wasn't much). It has a decent melody and a "floating tempo" (as Necros once penned it) that works well with the song. The percussion also works fairly well. What perplexes me is why it fades out in the middle of the song, and then suddenly starts up at full volume again. Why was this done? That definitely brought the score down. Samples are as good as you can expect for chip. The patterns are well-structured and the rhythm works well for this kind of song. The chord progression worked quite well, particularly when the key changes. Drumline was minimal, but it works well in this style.

This one was definitely lacking something. It's supposed to be a metal tune, but the choice of samples gave it a very hollow, weak sound. I didn't particularly care for the way that the short distorted guitars were used, making a very atonal mess. The introduction was not very interesting at all. Lots of issues here. When it jumps from pattern 0 to 1, there's a noticable volume jump. The way the drum samples were overworked (example: snare drums in last half of pattern 3) really detracted from the overall feel of the song. In addition, the jumpy changes in volume seemed extremely sudden and out of place. It would probably be better to change the tempo rather than the speed to make changes more subtle. Also, the author needs to make sure that looped samples are cut off at appropriate points, rather than left playing for several patterns at a time. In Impulse Tracker, I heard the bass guitar left looping at points, including the end of the song. That dropped the score down a notch.

Of course, it IS a game mod, so the musical aspect of it was not made by Thrym, but by whoever wrote the original music to the game. Fairly good. I can't say a whole lot about the sample quality. The guitar chords sound somewhat interesting, and good chord structure was used. It gets points for being in a time signature you don't normally hear in mod music (3/4). Kahvinkeitin definitely sounds like somebody's first attempt at tracking. There's only guitar, bass, and percussion, and not much of a melody. The drums are fast and furious, as one would expect for a metal track, but they just don't work very well. Quite poor. What the heck is up with the use of the drums in this one? The bass drum was used excessively, and with varying frequencies. The samples chosen are quite old and overused, especially the guitar sample (I used that particular sample quite frequently in my early days of tracking).

This is another song by K-9 that's fairly good, but could have been better. Unlike another song I've reviewed by him, "Spring Search", this one had an introduction that didn't really capture my attention. Also, the tune repeats throughout most of the song, although it's not as noticeable as his other efforts. One thing I really must point out is that there is no ending...it's not even prepared to loop, it just sorta stops at the last order, as if the author just left it there without finishing it. I wonder why that is. Again, not a bad sample set, but it seems like K-9 uses the same piano samples for every tune. I'm going to mention the ending in this section as well, since it leaves the synth chords playing and doesn't conclude the song at all. Use of effects was minimal, somewhat more use of intstruments were made.

However, the percussion really needs work, as it didn't seem to fit in the song at all (I'll talk about this a bit more in the technical section). As it is, the song is rather slow and the theme gets somewhat old later on. I noticed that pattern 0 was repeated four times...this was a part of the song that bored me. I also thought that the ending could have been better. All in all, it's not a bad tune, but it has some glaring flaws that should be corrected. Choice of samples was good in some cases, but a good deal of them sounded muffled. Also, many samples were not actually used in the song and could have been removed to reduce the file size. There was a big problem with the percussion, namely, the samples were played in a frequency that they're not intended to be played in. This made the percussion sound odd and unrealistic. Use of channels was good, allowing for more depth in the sound.
