Ouch. Extra cheesy 1990s Eurodance attack, complete with out-of-tune shower singing, recorded with a three dollar headset. Not my sort of thing, but hilarious. :)

This mod is interesting, if only for using so much to achieve so little.

It's excessive in size, has 2 MByte samples, that could be cut down to a few KBytes if looped properly and so on. There are also 64 channels, but mostly for the heck of it.

If all this would add up to a complex, long and interesting song, that would be fine, but it's "just" an overly hectic, stumbling, short and busy-looking Goa track.

A sub-par techno banger with taxing pitch ramped, chiptune-y sound effects all over the place. Listenable, but barely so.

If you were tasked to do a song on the topic of "stress", you could do worse than this. Although (by nature) taxing and repetitive, this concept piece is all about the Ying and Yang of tension and relief.

Ahh. The example MOD that comes with ModEdit 2.0; Incredibly pedestrian cover version of the old The Police hit.

But likely very memorable for those who heard a MOD file play for the first time on a mono Soundblaster card and a 286 PC way back in 1991. ;)

The music to Doomsday's Shingles is more than the sum of its few and frugal parts. There's a pronounced melancholy in those lucid brooding low-pass filtered sounds. And as the frequencies lose altitude to get lower and lower towards the end, the song pikes the ground and drags you along with it.

Groovy 1980s French Circus Pop (tm). What's not to love. :)

Ha, I recognize that one; Who could forget the wailing guitars (straight outta some 1991 Amiga mod), the hammy beats, the playful bass lines. And the piano glitter on top of it all. What a wonderful cheesecake of a tune.

Ah, the beautiful face and its ugly mole, or, to put it differently, the sure fire classic that stumbles over a basic flaw.

Because, really: What the frigg is it with the "Sommersmogbestimmung" (#15) sample. Why is it even there? Why repeat it constantly? It's an awful and useless addition and pulls me out of the otherwise great ambience of this song. Bummer. But at least you can mute it selectively, it's an XM module after all.

The bee's knees. If you had to pick just one XM file, this would be a pretty decent choice. Even the vocals, usually sorry nightmarish pitfalls of inaptitude and cringe factor number one, fall gracefully and subtly in line. 10/10.

Kasparov, named after the, by 1999 best chess player in the world, was a tour de-force realtime demo by Elitegroup, the half-joking, half-not joking "very good"(tm) German concept Demoscene group that wanted to kickstart a stagnant and boring scene. And did. For a bit at least. Relentless and hypnotic, Kasparov's endless matchbox shaped spider armies and sinister empty park house levels can still make an impression today, some 15 years later. It's a different age in computer graphics, yet, and still, "everything is under control".

And here's the soundtrack in all its post-processed, originally mp3 sample packed and re-added, baked-in real-time effects glory. At over 5 Mbyte size and 11 minutes running length, it sure is a behemoth of an XM file, but well worth it, as even with only half the impact, it remains an impressive feat. For the real deal, watch the demo.

(Rating? I'm going with "8 - Very Good", of course)

Sinister stuff. Vexing and broken too. Almost a-musical and very arbitrary in many places, it's certainly no masterpiece of whatever genre this might belong to (Industrial Goa Noise?), but it kept me interested for a while.

High octane new-school Protracker stuff. Top notch sample baking, sequencing, beat-slicing. If you'd put some EQ and reverb on it, limit the stereo-ness and levels, you'd have a professional product from 20+ year old software and even older hardware.

For the uninitiated, this is the final (and quite a bit shorter version) of the "dope" soundtrack, the famous MS-DOS demo by Complex, probably _the_ quintessential Demoscene production of the mid-1990s, that pushed the envelope of what was possible in realtime animation and music at the time, long before the advent of 3d accelerator cards and mp3. Definitely a classic and must-know/have for everyone into mod music or the Demoscene at large.

From the times before paniq got "big" with his Jeskola Buzz music, he made mostly straight forward drum'n'bass tracks in Impulse Tracker. This pretty cool circus dub tune is a rare exception. Skillfully tracked and still sounds great.

Ah, yes, Mhian.it; best mod ever, or bestet mod ever? When I first heard it, it sounded like no other mod I heard before and it's still a rather unique oddity among mods. Real guitars, lyrics in made-up German (Icelandic? Albanian? Impossible to tell). It's goofy, it's catchy, nonsensical and brilliant.

Hoffman's more recent tracks are a good example for how professional a 4 channel 8-bit Amiga Protracker mod can still sound, if you're willing to go the extra mile. That means: Very well prepared samples (baking in all the post-processing effects, getting the tuning right), relentless speed and exact timing everywhere.

Still, the biggest and most obvious selling point here is the sampled GITS2 soundtrack, which frankly, I always considered to be a vastly inferior permutation of the original GITS1 soundtrack, which is a real classic among film soundtracks. Check out Kenji Kawai's live concert medley on youtube, it's quite brilliant. :)

My favourite muffler track, period. On the surface, this is just another 64k haujobb intro banger (from one of the "licht" ones here, forgot what part exactly), but it does the (ahem) job so well. Very efficient tracking, no big melodies, just pure drive.

While I'm not sure if this is an original piece or some tracked "re-imagination" (there are no credits in the mod), this is excellent work and back then in 1995, it was a welcome departure from all the bucket loads of throw-away techno/trance that dominated the tracking scene. Still very pleasant to listen to and a rare gem not very many people seem to know of.

Oh, so this a mod too, for the longest time I only knew and listened to the mp3 rendition, which is slightly different, more concise, but just as good. At 10+ Mbyte this is surely close to the upper limit of what I've ever seen in mod file sizes and more than twice the size of the mp3, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a really well crafted, slick sounding tune. Also nice: the final endless loop, a feature obviously not found in the mp3. :)
