artist Completed in July 1998.

This, along with Jungle Trek and Indefinite Radiant, is one of three songs I completed in a brief flurry of songwriting in the summer of 1998.

In the late 1990’s, there was a brief resurgence in popularity of the Swing / Big Band style of music. I got into it very slightly myself, even purchasing a compilation CD of swing hits called “Swing This, Baby!” I only liked the music, I never cared for the dancing (I learned some basic swing dancing a few times, but was never very good at it).

I decided to give it a shot as a mod, and so I threw this together. The basic inspiration for this song came from Benny Goodman’s famous rendition of “Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing).” Other inspiration also came from “Cool” from West Side Story. Unusual for me, the speed of the song is very fast and thus the patterns go through very quickly. I loved the sound of the tom drums in swing music, and so I put a lot of emphasis on those. Naturally, I used a groove tempo - in fact, this was the last time I ever did a groove tempo in a mod.

This song was a lot of fun to make. I don’t think my groupmates in Shattered Fixtures appreciated it as much, or at least I only heard from those in the group that weren’t into this style of music.

I was beginning to work a graveyard shift job at the time and had overheard about others that worked in the “swing shift” which is probably where I heard the phrase that inspired the title.
