artist So, about this song. After I finished "Outcast" I was really excited that I was officially a computer musician and told just about everybody. In typical teenage fashion, not only could I write music, but obviously, I was the best at it!

My friends at school were similarly enthusiastic about technology and we decided the logical next step was to make a game. Since their programming, game design and artistic abilities were similarly as expert as my musical ability, surely it would be nothing but a huge success. This would have been just before the end of the school year in 1996. I definitely recall discussing our game plans at school with my friends.

We decided the game would be called Eighth Enigma and it would be a Myst clone. My friend "Pretzel" (as I frequently refer to him in my greets section) made a bit of artwork in 3D Studio that could be used for the game. Now all we had to do was program it, make some artwork, put the pieces together, and voila! Instant best-selling game of 1996!

Meanwhile, I had already started putting together my next song, which I later decided should be a part of this project. The song was titled "Calm" and had some chords strung together by a single synth choir sample. The chord progression was based on a piece of music I was playing in high school orchestra, a student arrangement of Wagner's overture to the opera Rienzi. (You can listen to the real version if you like, but it will be hard to find the part that this song quotes - I certainly can't do it).

So, when I completed this song, I said in the comments that it was part of the Eighth Enigma project, and left it at that.

Well, the word "completed" is a stretch. If you listen to this, you can tell it's not complete. I don't close out the looping samples when I should (in my defense, I didn't know how - a tiny flaw in my claims to be an expert). There isn't an ending or even a proper transition back to the beginning. But I was so enthusiastic about tracking that I was more interested in saying the song was done rather than it actually BEING done.

And so, I finished it, uploaded it to R-Squared, and was proud to have released my second song. As you can tell from my original comments, I thought more highly of this work than was actually justified.

I know the percussion was not a part of the original version but I don't recall if I uploaded it to R-Squared with or without the percussion. It doesn't really add much to it. The one that was uploaded to ModArchive has the percussion, and it wasn't uploaded by me. So I guess the version with the percussion is the one that got out into the wild.

As for Eighth Enigma: As you may have guessed, it never happened. The most we can say that we did was two songs, a piece of concept art, and a lot of delusions of grandeur. - arcturus

I was not convinced by this one. This S3M has only 6 patterns, a few less than average quality samples, and there are no sound enhancing efforts at all. This song might have been in the game Eighth Enigma. Most simple tracking level. Besides a volume change on two occasions there is not much of technical stuff I could write about here. There were a lot better songs in 1996.

Calm

The name sez it all...this
is a very calm piece,
unlike my debut song Out-
cast. This song was
submitted for a game
called Eighth Enigma, as to
which I am the official
musician! :)

This is song #2, but
who's counting? Besides
me? :)

I like this song so much,
I'm distributing it, even
if it's used in the game!
Or not.
If it sux, tuff.

Stressed out? Listen to
"Calm!" You'll feel better
in no time!
