Title: Question of Time

the guitar is plain and the harmony is dull and unimaginative. the percussion instruments, clapping, etc, add a little, but the beat is pretty uninteresting. the tracking seems very straightforward, as well. Seems that the artist probably had a good idea, but had trouble realizing it.

Although I like this song, it has some short-comings. The first (and probably biggest) shortcoming is the use of the piano to carry the melody. The sampling seems fine, but the artist shows none of the beauty a piano can produce... I could play the piano part with my two pointer fingers. This stands out. Second, the strings and the lower-register tunes, combined with the straightforward percussion, altogether get a little repetitive. For a seven-minute piece, the artist didn't really use the time well other than to create a somber ambience.

A metal song...complete with drums, distortion, riffs...the works. It's got a nice tune, a heavy feel to it, and some good chords. But, the transitions can be rough, rough enough to detract from the song. I'd say that this is due to the tracking, since I can easily imagine how a real-life band might have done them. Also, sometimes, the higher notes stick out with a little too much contrast.

This is an excellent arrangement of the level 6 theme. I can't get enough of it. I haven't played any of the Blaster Master games but the original, so I have no idea if this theme makes further appearances -- meaning, if this artist based his or her work solely on the 8-bit original game, then they did a great job. On my players, however, it ends a little abruptly...don't know if this is intentional, for looping, or what.

Very cool song, good rhythm... Seems like a smooth bit of tracking, though my experience with tracking is severely limited. I especially enjoy the admixture of levity and gravity that the song seems to express.

Albeit short, the simple tunes are well applied. The piece has an undertone that is true to its name, heavy. Personally, I find the melodic overtone quite enjoyable. As a former gamer, I think I would enjoy playing a level or board with this tune. My only criticism is that, because I enjoy longer modes of expression, the piece was too short. Of course, for a game, maybe memory restricts the length, but then perhaps this artist might consider a suite of shorter songs forming a whole that transcends each of its constituents. Just a suggestion.

This is such a quaint piece...but nonetheless I enjoy the beat and the rather simple melody. It's a foot-tapper, for sure. The soundbytes are, in one case...odd...and in another case, what one might expect in a song concerning Africa. Other than the voice sampling, there is actually something about it that reminds me of my time in Africa. On the whole, I'd say it's a decent piece.

After giving this song several chances, I still found myself unimpressed. If I could sum it up in a sentence, I'd say that the use of chip tunes needn't result in a song that sounds like a kid with his/her new mini electric keyboard, playing with both hands but with only his/her pointer fingers. It's too bad, because with a lot of work...and use of some tracker effects...this song could have been a nice whistle-along.

The electric guitar is decent, though the heavier parts are a bit of a contrast to the title. The guitar breaks away for some garish upper-register melodizing that seems vaguely reminiscent of old Purple Motion stuff... The artist underpins the tune with a solid set of drums. The tune is a good one, and does an excellent job of filling the mind with the idea of actually...I dunno...riding a rainbow...in an extreme sports, air-jet-ski kind of way... Overall, it's a song that's fun to listen to.

This seems, being as short as it as, like it was designed for a videogame. Or, at least, not written for the sake of the song itself. The overall tune is serious, which is a good thing, given the title. The artist has made decent use of stereophonics and the limited samples. But how much feeling and/or thought can such a short and simple piece really convey? Unfortunately for this piece, I have heard some 1.5 minute pieces that really show some ownership over their little slices of life.

Very short. The samples/instruments/whatever are not too impressive, mostly very short. The song seems lively and gay, such that overall I'm left with the impression that this was designed with a videogame in mind. If this were the case, the tracks, the sound quality, the mood, etc., would all make sense.

This song, presumably dealing with galaxies or galactic scales in some way, necessarily must travel around a bit. Indeed, the song ties together (and travels over) a multitude of smaller pieces. The first is perhaps the least attractive, in my opinion: it uses a fair number of very short tracks, and puts some effects to good use, such as portamento; the melody is perhaps lighter on the ear than the harmony, which is problematic, since the harmony isn't particularly impressive. The song transitions to a second portion, much different from the first and slower, too. Then to a third, faster, and so on. Each transition is smooth, and one piece varies (sometimes greatly) on the one before in some way. So, the listener is taken along for the ride. In one section at least, the rhythm is driven by a thrumming harmony, accentuated only by percussion (I thought this was a nice touch). The ending is too short, however. I felt cheated, a little. Overall, this is a song I say could benefit greatly by the limitlessness of the medium: each piece ought to be expanded to its full potential. Who cares how long it gets? A galaxy is a large place, too large for this song.

Starts off with a thoughtful & relaxed unamped guitar and drums, then leads into some heavy electric guitar. The melody carries well and the transition is decent. Nice refrains and so forth. Altogether is pretty catchy...Seems this piece would do well as a radio single for a pop/metal band.

Nice melody, interesting use of chip music, and good rhythm. While the transitions gave this piece life and broke up the repetitiveness that could have easily overwhelmed the piece, they also sometimes interrupted a good percussion run. There seem to be several tunes that are joined together and mixed up in the transitions, which makes this piece, when combined with the beat, overall pretty good.

The guitar is nice, which is unusual. Although the percussion isn't mind-blowing, it does the job. Seems to me that if the listener doesn't "feel" the song, it really would be boring and maybe unimaginative. But words like sinister, ominous, and onerous really capture this short piece, in my opinion.

I can't comment on the technical usage of the IT format, tracking, etc. Otherwise...The song opens very nicely, then gives way to a melody which, more or less, is repeated over and over throughout the song. The melody seems too voluminous compared with the harmony...it overbears. Perhaps this is due to the manner in which the sample is used. It's a pity because beneath it I think there may be something with a little more complexity, such as the string work. Overall the song, to me, lacks variation and balance. The percussive element to the piece harken to...elevator music. It could be revised to emphasize less of the melody, to develop the rest of the score.

When I first listened to this, I was disappointed that I had stumbled upon yet another manifestation of uncreativeness: the sampling of Hal 9000's voice. Nonetheless, I gave the song a chance, and after a few days, I was loving it. I'm feeling particularly unexpressive about what was good in the song, so just download it and listen to it.

Somewhere in this short piece was a catchy little tune. However, the execution was poor. Was this part of the NES Dick Tracy videogame score? That's what comes to mind, anyway. I don't think I can give this piece a very good score.

The transitions in this piece are faster than my ability to hear and process sound...almost. This seems to be an attempt to make something of a heavy metal piece in electronic format; and although the drums aren't half bad, the guitar-like noise is left with carrying the tune, which it can't do very well.

Mostly I find this piece to be uneven. Everything seemed like it was at max volume, when a little finesse could have gone a long way. It's hard to have a build-up when everything is already over-developed. As for qualities, this piece had some decent technique when it came to the rhythm and the percussion use. The quality of the harmonizing waxed and waned, but overall wasn't half bad. And again, with some finesse, the end could have had a sweet climactic effect.

I found this to be a lively tune that, more or less, captures the theme of its namesake. As for style, it has a tropical-island-bar feel to it. I'm not particularly savvy when it comes to samples vs instruments, but I'd say that the 1:1 ratio or samples to instruments must have had some impact on the quality of the sound in the song (which could have been better).

What an array of samples in this piece! I might keep it around just to keep guessing how and why the artist recorded them... Anyway this piece had a very dirty, post-apocalyptic, terminators-everywhere kind of feel to it. I emphasize terminators, b/c the 1980's motif is one of the only ways I can examine this piece and not be disappointed. It doesn't do much other than menace its listener...The chords keep going and going...once in a while some dogs try to scare ya... All in all it'd be nice to have around when the mood hits.

Quite short, probably too short to be anything but repetitive. I wonder that this couldn't have been developed into something more substantial: it onerous rhythm and harmony added to its subdued melody (all of which were recycled over and over) made it seem like a portent of something...big. But alas, it is what it is.

What can I say...This was listenable... The drums were poor at times, even repetitive and unexciting most of the time. The melody was carried by what seemed like a single..noise.., and had pretty transparent effects. The chord progressions were uninteresting most of the time, and on top of all that, the voices were a big detriment.

What a nice take on the original. Probably could have used a little more development in the actual theme, in terms of technique and arrangement. This might have evened out the piece as well as given the artist more to work with when the wildness took over. Overall, short, but decent.

Led to this piece by its name, I was sorely disappointed. If, on the other hand, I weren't looking for a piece associated with the ballet, I would say that this mod showed some creativity with its beats and odd samples. Really, those two things comprised the entire thing. As for a melody, it mostly wasn't there (only showed up in an understated fashion at times). With some work it could be something worth dancing to, but not as is.

This is a decent song except for how repetitive "yo wasup" gets. The distortion effects (i'm not up on the jargon) on the voice-bites added a nice touch, too. Overall I have to say I like it, but if I listen too hard that one voice sample starts to irk me. Probably, it's just me.

This is one of my favorite songs. The use of Jimmy Stewart's soundbyte, the sampling effects, the smooth transitions... Such a great, laid back tune. This piece shows some skill... Felt like maybe there were different themes fighting for the mainstage in this, but I dunno. It is a pleasure to hear--makes me want to suggest that the artist return to this piece and rewrite it as a much longer one, one that takes the time to expand what seem to be separate emotions / artistic visions (if that's what was going on).

This indeed is a good song. I'm no musical expert, but I give it only an 7: where it excelled with good rhythm and "catchiness," it was repetitive and lacked in any challenging musical techniques.
In response to another comment which expressed a frustration with libmodplug, I use debian-distro linux and at first was unable to hear anything but a beat. However, unzipping the file, I can (or so I believe) hear the song in its full glory. Libmodplug is for the xmms sound player, but xmms died with xmms2. Try using Audacious. As far as I can tell, it has no dependency on libmodplug, though I could be mistaken. With the associated plugins, everything should work fine.
