Less of a song and more of a tech demo, a meticulously crafted one, stretching the limits of what can be achieved on this format.

Maximalism is true to its word as it comes in at a whopping 1.1MB (for its time), 65 samples and 30-channels. Even though the song appears to be bursting at the seams with the variety of instruments and samples Mick employed, he somehow melds them all together to produce a rather tuneful track. One thing with Mick is that his compositions are almost always tune-based. This escapes the fate of many demoscene compositions that end up sounding like glorified tech demos.

The only drawback with this particular track is the fidelity of many of the samples (likely in the interests to save space). As such, more than a few of them sound quite muffled or a little distorted.

One of my favorites from back in the day; the tune that introduced me to the legendary Mick Rippon. A meditative song, one of the few featuring the shakuhatchi as its main instrument.

I disagree with the previous commenter suggesting that the lack of drums make this a lesser track. Not every song requires percussion, and there are more than a few shakuhatchi/pan-flute songs featuring tribal beats (Ascent of the Cloud Eagle by Necros for example). Adding percussion or additional effects would detract from the serenity this piece conveys. This 16-channel s3m is a perfect example that sometimes less is more.

Great samples, nice and clean sounding. The first half is pure 10 and it gets a little funkier in the latter half of the song, which I would give either an 8 (or maybe stretching towards a 9). Anyways, avg of the two scores = 9.

I agree with the previous commenter that the song conveys the feeling of being in the middle of the ocean quite effectively. Yes, the pause breaks do break up the flow of the song, but I believe the song warrants a higher score than a "6", as plenty of other "10's" here are pretty awful. Nice use of the shakuhachi sample by the way.

A really pleasant mellow guitar-based soft-rock tune. The guitar samples are quite nice here.

The second tracker module I ever listened to. I remember it being leaps and bounds over the others at the time. So much nostalgia.

Wow, just discovered that he remixed this tune and released it on bandcamp as a free download (name your price): https://elmobo.bandcamp.com/album/amiga-days-remasters-volume-2

One of my favorite tracker modules from the legendary Necros. I have to disagree with the ambient label others gave to this track. It sounds more like Deep Forest with a lot more drive casting this song far afield from any potential new age tag.

Loved this track when I first encountered it in a demo. The xm version of the song is great except it differs from the demo starting at 2 minutes. The demo, as I recall, uses a different sample from the harsher (buzzier) sounding sample heard in the xm version. Unfortunately, I lost the demo years ago and forgot its name (https://modarchive.org/forums/index.php?topic=2947.0). It is a great ambient techno tune, but I wish the sample in the xm was closer to that heard in the demo.

Nice mix and usage of samples. I enjoyed the piano sample from FSOL's "Max." According to FSOL, Max is a reference to their collaborator Max Richter, a modern composer people should definitely check out.

Great ambient/chillout tune with an easygoing, steady drum loop and piano to keep things interesting. Required listening!
