Hiya 2a03! The best thing to do would probably be to download a couple of chip tracks that you like, and look really closely at how they achieve different effects. The great thing about tracking (especially when you don't use effects, plugins, and whatnot) is that you anyone can learn from looking at other people's music.

Hiya Tranchedevie! Welcome. :)

If you're interested in compos, I can highly recommend The Novus Compo. And there's The Barryvan Compo, run by yours truly. ;)

Hope you enjoy your time here!

The Lobby / Culling Compo Forum

Just wondering whether it would be worthwhile culling the compo forum. There's a lot of outdated stuff there, and it's cluttering up the RSS feed a little. What do you think?

I have the same problem. It's never worked for me. :/

Tracking / Re: Piano Roll Editors (aka Dots on a screen)

Just a thought... Apple should consider developing Quicktime and iTunes to accept mod files... Would this development be impossible or just a waste of time?

Not gonna happen. :)

Re: trackers, your best bet would probably be to set up some sort of dual-boot system, 'cos as far as I know, there's very little development happening for Mac, but lots for Linux and Windows. :)

Sort of... :D That being said, don't assume that Renoise is "better" than OpenMPT - they are both just different responses to the same thing. If they're used professionally, you won't be able to tell them apart, or tell OpenMPT frame FLStudio, or Renoise from Cubase. It's all in getting to know your tracker, its limitations, features, and quirks. :)

Hello!

Well, to answer your first question, and, as m0d says, "chip in" :D I'd recommend OpenMPT. I've been using it for many years now, and I've found it really fast and intuitive. If you're completely new to tracking, it's a good start, because of it's traditional Windows interface. Check out the Modplug Forums for more info, and to ask specific questions about it. :D There are a couple of people from here who are also over there. In fact, once you start to know people, you'll run into them all over the "scene" websites. :)

Oh, and as m0d says, you'll want to check the other forums for more info on making samples. (But if you just want instrumental sounds, try downloading some free VSTs and sticking them into OpenMPT - it's one of the easiest ways.)

All the best!
