Title: Re: duplicate modules
Post by: raina on December 29, 2014, 12:50:46
These
http://modarchive.org/module.php?47983
http://modarchive.org/module.php?174452

are smaller versions of
http://modarchive.org/module.php?32380

Differences beyond the small ones in sample text? Which one(s) should prevail?

Anyway, all of them and this one
http://modarchive.org/module.php?39874

should be assigned to Zodiak's profile.

Modules have been merged and assigned. Which module text prevails is acutally not a question because we always show the actual file content, i.e. since the smaller versions have been deleted, their text is now gone too.

Yeah, I meant which file or files should stay. I couldn't say myself.

Hi,

Those 3 are identical I believe:
* http://modarchive.org/module.php?52928
* http://modarchive.org/module.php?52727
* http://modarchive.org/module.php?55521

I'm not sure which one should be the canonical version though...
Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules
Post by: Saga Musix on January 28, 2016, 00:13:34
Nice find, plinker.mod is definitely not the original as it contains a trimmed sample, so it's one of the other two. The only difference I can spot is a single letter in the sample names, so it probably doesn't make much of a difference which one is kept.
Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules
Post by: LynXX on January 28, 2016, 23:47:42
Another 2 identical:
* http://modarchive.org/module.php?39533
* http://modarchive.org/module.php?39944

I'd keep the one named "CBR.MOD" because that's how I came to know this module 20+ years ago ;) but I don't really mind.

Just noticed:

http://modarchive.org/module.php?154989
http://modarchive.org/module.php?58596

The older one is the original, although I can't spot any differences apart from very minor sample text edits; wonder why anyone would've done that.

All merged.
Top one is registered under the actual artist.
You don't need to specificy this every time, since it is not the criterion which is used for merging anyway, since it does in no way indicate that it might be the original file that we'd like to keep. On the contrary, in the first of your three posts the module registered to the actual artist actually contained some additional sample text added by a BBS, so it's definitely no the version that should be kept.

Noted... It's sometimes hard to tell which file is the original. As I'm new on this forum, you may want to point me to some guidelines if there are any.

Apart from that, I always appreciate credits for the author of a piece...

There aren't any guidelines, I decide which file should remain on a case-by-case basis.

These two seems to be the same:
https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=122862 (https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=122862)
https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=153942 (https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=153942)

The first one is weirdly panned, correct me if I'm wrong but I have read somewhere that people did this due to technical limitations on the Amiga. And the second would have been corrected?
However the instrument text says "zalza1998chiplover" for the first one and the other has "zalza 96" as the author, so the first one is actually anterior? ???

By the way, given a xm file panned this way, how can I make it mono? Using Milkytracker I tried looking for the effect 8 and for panning settings in the instrument view but I didn't find anything.

People did not "do this" (intentionally). It is simply not technically possible to do otherwise in the Amiga MOD format...

...and on the other hand, the XM format does not have channel panning but only sample panning, hence everything is just panned to center by default unless you set a different default sample panning for each sample.

I will probably just ask Zalza which file is the original one.

If you mean MOD file rather than XM, you probably can't as long as Milky plays it in Amiga ProTracker mode.

I refer to it as sample panning because it's a per-sample setting in XM. In IT you have both sample panning (a property of the sample) and instrument panning (a property of the entire instrument).

Oh right, I was confused about this because in MilkyTracker (and from the screenshots I've seen FastTracker 2) you change the per-sample setting in the instrument panel, the sample you set this to is the one which is selected.

https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=106854

I think "sind_klf.mod" is the 'most-genuine' as the module name is the closest to what was originally released by the klf in 1993 (but I think both are identical?)
However, perhaps renaming the 'winning' file to
"Maelcum_-_Sindication_TM.mod"
is more in keeping with modarchive's requested file-naming format?
Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules

Merged. For legacy modules, I generally prefer to keep the better-known legacy name as well.

PS: I saw that you recently uploaded a lot of old KLF stuff. I hope you're aware that AMF is just DMP's intermediate song format, i.e. not a tracker-specific format. If possible, it would be nice to have the original files (MOD/669/whatever) instead of AMF files, but I know this is not always possible.

Thanks Saga Musix.

Re. AMF:
As far as I can tell the amf songs were originally released as amf?
These have been extracted from zips hosted at
ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/music/groups/kosmic/1993/
and extracted amfs appear to have the correct release date in their file properties.
Additionally, the FILE_ID.DIZ states .amf as the release format; i.e.
Quote
~snip  ASCII art~
       PRODUCTIONS PRESENT
                *
       BEAT iT UP  (.AMF)
  MOMO - African Style
  CREATED by Sinbad [KLF]
     Copyright (C) 1993
apparently this particular song was created "using good old Modedit."
So I assume the artist will be (just about?) the only person who may have the original format - if they still have the files burnt somewhere on something still readable after 24 years...   ;)
(sorry if this is off-topic)

https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=69090 (s3m)
they all sound the same quality to me.
(if my info is right) the original release-format from Kosmic was mtm though.

Yeah, that's why I said that I'm aware it's not always possible. But more often than not, e.g. when already-released songs get reused in demos or diskmags, the original file can be found as well.

Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules
Post by: Saga Musix on March 17, 2019, 19:57:59
Yes, typically those texts were not by the original artist, but of course that's not true in each and every case - for example the artist might advertise their "home" BBS through which they spread all their tunes. But with those Music Channel BBS texts you can be pretty sure they weren't added by the artist.

Another duplicate. "94956", https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=47106, appears to be an uncredited and renamed version of "Kingdom Skies", https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=44452.

Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules
Post by: Kinnikinnick0718 on August 30, 2019, 18:33:30
I posted the song "new world order" in S3M format before finding the actual module (it was made in Composer 669:)

Original: https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=184434 (https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=184434)
Duplicate: https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=184310 (https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=184310)

Also, about this:

Quote
occ-san-geen_long.mod (hash 3a54fc9fd94687a8f7d6e77589949d99) has been screened before and was rejected for the following reason: TIDY-UP MERGED. occ-san-geen.mod already exists as OCC-SAN.MOD on the archive..

Uncle Tom himself made a remix of occ-san-geen called occ-san-geen.long, and it's a bit different from the original version (just like the other occ-san-geen in the screening queue,) and thus I don't really know why that module has been merged with occ-san.mod, but these weren't:

Nes-Tea: https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=49984 (https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=49984)
Nes-Tea but it's a little different: https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=103971 (https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=103971)

The version that's in the archive isn't even the original occ-san-geen, it's a subtle remix that was featured in the game "Need for Madness."

New World Order has been merged.

Quote
I don't really know why that module has been merged with occ-san.mod, but these weren't:
Because this is an ongoing process and I don't think anyone has reported them yet. And: All of this is a manual process, often it is not obvious at all which version is the "correct" one. Mistakes happen. From what I can see, OCC-SAN.MOD was the older copy of the two files in the archive (and not ripped from Need for Madness if that's what you implied; it's just likely that they downloaded this version for their game instead) and we decided to keep the older version.

Oh, I understand now.
But I still believe the version in the archive is the one from Need for Madness, since the original version I found on AMP doesn't use the toms on pattern 28 and also ends differently (you can still find pattern 41 in OCC-SAN.MOD,) while the version in NFM ends almost exactly like the "long" version:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1DFx-FrTPvqTmnLtnSKJiuLVfbm4ywkww (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1DFx-FrTPvqTmnLtnSKJiuLVfbm4ywkww)

But I guess it's not that important. Thanks for merging the two.
Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules
Post by: Saga Musix on September 01, 2019, 19:02:17
Sure it might be the same version as used in the game - but that doesn't say anything about being the "right" or "wrong" version. It's often impossible to tell which version(s) were spread by the original author or were modified by others, and being on AMP doesn't necessarily make it any more legit than being on ModArchive or the other way around. Without having any clear hint on which version might be the "right" one, I won't replace or merge anything in this specific case.

Some more dupes.
uralvol.mod and uravlga.mod, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=59284 and https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=59292, are both duplicates of uralvolga_fine.mod, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=88574. From looking at several sites, uralvolga_fine.mod appears to be the original, and is also attributed to Bruno in the guest artists.

Another Bruno dupe, and possibly a rip?
Dupe: metalica.mod https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=51003.
Possible rip: controll.mod https://api.modarchive.org/downloads.php?moduleid=38966#controll.mod.
These are dupes of controller.mod https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=85647. controll.mod is oddly slowed down in various places, but appears to be otherwise identical to controller.mod.
Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules
Post by: Saga Musix on September 12, 2019, 19:39:53
controll.mod was definitely imported into ST2 or ST3 and then re-saved as MOD, as you can see from the randomly added numbers in the sample names. Looking at the samples data, controller.mod appears to be the original as there is some weird sample start shifting going on in metalica.mod. I will keep controller.mod.

Another dupe discovered while looking through the orchestral genre. All4rain.xm, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=170740, is a duplicate of all_for_the_rain.xm, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=134227. All4rain is likely an edited version that appeared in a TSRh keygen.

Another dupe.
BLUEBOX.MOD, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=34569, appears to be a duplicate of blueboxing.mod, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=122430. Even though it's more recent, judging by the sample texts it seems that blueboxing.mod is the original.

At the very least it doesn't have a rip notice, so I agree that we should keep that version.

Dupe time again. Mystical_-_salcon.mod, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=161916, appears to be a duplicate of salcon.mod, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=55102. Only difference between these two appears to be the lack of a title in salcon.mod, which appears to have been the original from Theparty96.
Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules
Post by: Saga Musix on October 21, 2019, 21:16:28
Given that the title isn't even complete (according to the sample text), I doubt it belongs there. I kept salcon.mod.

Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules
Post by: Saga Musix on November 07, 2019, 21:02:25
pkunk2.mod seems like it could be the older version of the two, as the header kinda looks like it might have been saved with NoiseTracker (rather than ProTracker). That's the only obvious difference I could find so I kept that file.
Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules

Dupe. orch.s3m, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=68868, appears to be a duplicate of ORCH.S3M, https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=49878. Only difference appears to be the lack of a title in ORCH.S3M and the uppercase file name, so ORCH.S3M is probably the original.

Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules

Also merged. Note that if there is no title, the website shows the filename instead, so that is why "the filename was put as a title". If you look at the file in a tracker, you will see that the title is empty. The other, newer file was presumably just a modified copy where the title was filled in by someone else.

Howdy! This is probably not a plagiarism since the author's name has been left untouched in the file's msg. I just decided to report the file "crusader-1499.mod" just because it's exactly the same file as 12th warrior but with the title of the song changed to "crusader". Not sure what's all that about.
Title: Re: Re: duplicate modules

These kind of things should be reported in the duplicate modules (https://modarchive.org/forums/index.php?topic=869.0) thread instead because, as you stated yourself, it's not plagiarism in the classic sense. These kind of things (renaming files in particular when ripping them from games) did happen frequently.
Anyway, the modules have been merged into one.

Bladswede Remix by Allister Brimble, from the Team 17 game Project X.

There is another similar version at ID 53130, but this one sounds different in the beginning. I believe this is from the 3-disk re-relase of Project X, while the two IDs above are from the original 4 disk release.

Dupes: 49858 (OHYEAH.MOD) and 50305 (OH_YEAH.MOD)

Uploaded same date. Seems the only difference is that the latter has a BBS ad in the sample text.

Basically a really nice Soundtracker rendition of "Oh Yeah" by Yello.

I see ModLand has it credited to Dr. Awesome aka Bjørn Lynne, but not sure if that is correct. It looks kind of out-of-character for him. Also, AMP has it credited to Marcus Thomson (http://amp.dascene.net/detail.php?detail=modules&view=13857)

Looks like your right. Found the 100 kb version somewhere else on my harddrive, and sample 8 sounded like some random leftover sample parts.

All done, except for "Jazz Bubbles", as the first link pointed to "Shang Highscore" instead and I couldn't find any other obvious dupe of it.

Two different file sizes, not sure why. Same sound, same instrument labels, same length.

Remember getting this back in the day as "mod.3", I believe it was on a CU Amiga cover disk. Have no idea who made it, but remember thinking it sounded very professional for the time.

Seems like someone went ahead and deleted two unused samples, so I would guess that the smaller files are not original. Apart from that, it would seem that either amiga.mod or hip_hop-3.mod might be the original, I went with amiga.mod.

Merged. Note that "filename as song title" simply (at least in most cases, open the actual file to verify) means that there is no song title. Seems like someone was bothered by the file not having a title (those without song titles are the originals) and then added it themselves.

"Yes and no", Music Contest entries were anonymous and to help with that, all sample texts were cleared. So the file with no texts is the MC5 file, while the one with texts was released after the results were out.

Might also want to take a look at these:

All merged.
Note that upload age should never server as a decision factor unless the files are otherwise identical (which was not the case for crazytrain for example, there were some differences in pattern data). Information inserted by people other than the original author (e.g. "this file passed through xxxxxx BBS" or "ripped by xxxxxxx") is always a reason to not prefer that file, because it shows that it's not the original file, even if that means that a file not containing any author information at all would be kept. (though it seems like I was distracted and did keep the chopper 1 version with the rip notice inside... oh well.)
Also note that unless you have specific knowledge which file is certain to be the original, you don't need to specifiy which file to keep. If it's just a random guess which file to keep, it would be more helpful not to make that guess at all.

Third file ("crockets theme" / crocket-925.mod) has different samples, unlike the 1st and the 2nd file.

Not sure if the fifth file should be considered a duplicate. It is similar to four previous files, but has some differences:

Am I missing anything obvious here? Samples that are padded with silence aren't really "corruption" - and this appears to be the original file in fact because it's a NoiseTracker file, while the other file is a ProTracker file. So I'm inclined to keep this version.

I'll also keep the two "Für Elise" versions as it's not really clear which of the two might be the original.

Edit: that alf tune has been replaced by a non-broken version.

hemisphere_1-2-41.mod is the original
Are you sure? Unlike the other files it's a StarTrekker module (FLT4 instead of M.K. magic bytes). Of course it could really have been written in StarTrekker, or some StarTrekker user resaved the file in that tracker for whatever reason.

Edit: Still merged since the FLT4 version appeared to be the best.

Quote
pet_shop.mod removes an unused instrument, is named etc. but has a bbs notice, again I do not even know if these were edited in/out by someone else (besides the BBS notice obviously)
All of that looks like it's the work of whoever spread the file through that BBS. Before uploading the file to their BBS, they would make sure it's named properly, and remove unused stuff to save space and speed up upload/download times.

Okay, this one is really confusing but I promise they are the same, besides the mixing, luxor_-_drum03.mod being corrupted and the 3rd instrument being different. According to http://janeway.exotica.org.uk/release.php?id=33915, Karsten Obarski composed this song with Frog, but Frog isn't Luxor and the file on that site is identical to drum03.mod.

Helmet Shake, by Jogeir Liljedahl:

helmet_shake.mod is attributed to the correct registered artist (jogeir-liljedahl (https://modarchive.org/member.php?69569)), and the internal texts contain the oldest copyright notice.

helmet-shake.mod and helmshke.mod are the same size, and their internal texts contain an identical rip notice.  The rip notice attributes the track to "Jogeir/Spaceballs".

The ripped text matches what I recall when I encountered the track some time between 1996–1998.   I believe it was used as the pack-in "demo" .mod for one of the DOS/Windows trackers, but  I don't recall which one (would have guessed ModPlug Tracker, but seems a little early).

https://modarchive.org/module.php?199656 and https://modarchive.org/module.php?199657 are duplicates.

make sure to keep 199657 since the author wants 199656 to be removed.

(saga please be active here again just this once, you're clearly better than me)

They're still in the queue, but I uploaded two duplicate modules, "But a Sweep!" and "But uh, Delete". Can the one uploaded first "But a Sweep!" Be removed as that one doesn't have any internal texts?

I've screened "But, Uh Delete" and rejected your other upload as a dupe.

Hoping to bajesus I'm putting this in the right place!

https://modarchive.org/module.php?163240 (cerebral_9_-_mindbox.s3m)

is a duplicate of

https://modarchive.org/module.php?51829 (mindbox.s3m)

(And, subjectively speaking, I'd say it's tagged as the wrong genre - it's tagged as Electronic - Ambient, but to my ears it's far more comfortable in Electronic - Industrial, it's extremely atmospheric, but it's a steady 4/4 beat with a chord progression, which I think puts it outside the pure "ambient" genre)

Here is as good as any, and please don’t worry.

There is a topic for dupes- I will try and merge this one there.
Genre tagging is done by the first to comment, I’ll poke the DB and set the kept module to the one you suggested.

Edit: done, including genre :)

Currently found 3 tracks, that are duplicate of "Speed-e Boy" by Martin Ivenson aka Nuke (or sometimes Spaceman).

https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=172705 (Ykyrococ.com)
https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=58075 (speedebo.mod)
https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=130966 (speed-e_boy.mod)

Their sizes are identical as well as their length. The "ykyrococ.mod" upload has favourites and ratings on it. "speedebo.mod" upload only has favourites. "speed-e_boy.mod" upload doesn't have any such data

I’ve merged all these to the 58075 ID- do we know if the Nuke account on TMA is the same guy?

The author of the modules is British. The only artist account I've found on TMA states, that they're from Finland
