Wanted: Music for Projects / Re: Music for indie game Katakijin Needed
« on: September 09, 2008, 14:54:18 »
Yeah, looping would be a problem. :/ Whether it'll work or not will depend largely on the playback libraries you're using - a lot of them put in a pause, whether you want it or not, and whether it's in the file or not.

If you liked Drifting, you might also like Nightfall, which is similar in style, but a little bit softer. Perhaps for a quieter area of the game. :)

What time frame are we talking about with the music? At the moment, I haven't got very much time spare (a thesis'll do that), but in a couple of weeks I'll have more. There are always my existing pieces, of course...

Hiya Ultim8. I might be able to help you out with that... As long as you don't mind the music being in a format like MP3/OGG/FLAC/whatever. The problem is that I use a lot of plugins, which can't be ported around. But I'm still interested in maybe helping you out. If you like, check out my Trax In Space profile or my website for some of my stuff.

First check that Milkytracker's not wrong - try your test under XMPlay and, if you can, FastTracker itself.

Bug Reports / [fixed] DTD points to wrong system identifier
« on: August 27, 2008, 16:24:35 »
The main site's DTD (not the forum's) currently specifies a system identifier of http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/loose.dtd, whilst it should be http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd .

Pedantic? Me?

Sampling / Re: HOw about an ACCORDIAN sample?
« on: August 16, 2008, 08:50:36 »
In my experience, good accordion samples are hard to find. :/ Unless you want to spring for a massive sampler+library like Kontakt3, which includes a couple, your best bet is probably to rip some samples from a free soundfont. :(

The Lobby / Re: what are you learning/working?

I'm an Honours student in Computer Science. I also design websites and do typesetting. And try to do some stuff with my music, too. :) If you really want to know more, just visit my website. :P

You'll need to find your samples somewhere. One way is to "rip" them from other tracks (but this can be contentious). Another way is to sample them yourself, from, say, your various VST plugs. Then you can trim them down, lower the bitrate (if necessary - ideally, you'd want to stick with 16bit if at all possible), and load 'em up in OpenMPT or MilkyTracker.

For trackers, I'd recommend using OpenMPT (it's what I use). Although you won't use it, it has full VST support and so on, and, as has been mentioned, it can *kinda* import MIDI files. :) If you do decide to go with OpenMPT, make sure that you check out the Modplug Forums; the MilkyTracker forums, as you no doubt know, are right here.

The absolute best way to learn how to make mods is to download some and start fiddling with them, and you're in the right place to do that. A good one for you to look at would be Aryx (20.3KB, and in S3M, not MOD, format), and many others that other people here will be able to suggest.

Tracking / Re: Different between the modules
« on: July 22, 2008, 16:18:50 »
Well, think of them in the same way as different types of image. You have PNG, JPeg, GIF, SVG, EPS, and so on. Each format was created at a different time to fulfill different needs. Some are more complex, others are simpler.

MODs are the earliest (and simplest) common files you'll find. They're created using a bunch of different programs, including ProTracker and ModEdit. The term "Mod" also refers to any of the formats.

S3M is the ScreamTracker3 format. It's kinda like a super-enhanced MOD. :)

XM is the FastTracker II format. This was a revolutionary format when it came out, because it has some really neat features, like instruments (different samples for different notes automatically), envelopes (you can control exactly how the sound is going to change for every note without using effects), and much more besides. XMs are more similar to MODs than they are to S3Ms.

IT is the Impulse Tracker format. This is, in my opinion, the best of the old formats. It took many of the features from FastTracker and expanded on them; it boasts features such as New Note Actions (NNAs), filters, and a whole lot more besides. Note that there was (still is, I guess) a lot of controversy of which is better - XM or IT. :)

Now, if you're going to use Modplug Tracker (OpenMPT), you have to realise that it's IT format is completely different from Impulse Tracker's. OpenMPT has taken the IT format into the twenty-first century with plugins, automation, tunings, and a thousand more things besides.

Hope that clears things up a little. Remember that most modern trackers (like OpenMPT) can open most of the old formats, and play them back. OpenMPT can also convert between them (although moving up the chain [MOD->S3M->XM->IT] works a lot better than moving down the chain [IT->XM->S3M->MOD].)

Hiya Ribby. First up, I think you should upgrade your version of Modplug to the latest OpenMPT release. You can find more OpenMPT info at the Modplug Forums. Also, once you've got a somewhat newer version, you can check out this thread for the very latest versions. :) You can have up to 127 channels, and the underlying engine and VST handling is vastly improved. :D

When it comes to making your own samples, all that you really need for acoustic instruments is an instrument and some way of recording it. Over at Trax In Space, MrSix has been discussing a couple of guitar packs he's putting together in this thread, so that might be worth checking out.

The alternative, of course, is to not use samples, but virtual instruments (VSTis). There are some great ones available at KVR Audio, both free and commercial. One of the most popular (commercial) guitar plugins is Slayer, but there are many others.
