Title: OpenMPT Module Support?
Post by: ewk on October 24, 2014, 17:39:34
Hey,
I've noticed that there is no support for OpenMPT module files (.mptm). I know that not many people use them, but it might be a good idea to add them just in case...

Thanks for any help!

Being both an OpenMPT developer and ModArchive administrator, I don't see much use for MTPM support right now - Generally we want files on ModArchive to be playable "out of the box", and most of the time, MPTMs would most likely contain VST plugins, which you cannot simply use in a player like XMPlay. However, now that there is actually libopenmpt (and with it, input plugins for foobar, Winamp and XMPlay), it is actually possible now to actually play MPTM files in other programs than OpenMPT (but still without plugins, as said), it is slightly more likely that we could add MPTM support at some point. I'm pretty neutral on this topic though, so someone else on the team might have another opinion.

IMO Its not a classic mod file, it would be difficult to screen as it would require additional software by staff and it causes issues with choice of OS due to that. Allowing these would also open the critique that other non-classic formats like Renoise should be allowed, which I do not agree with at all.

As said, there is an input plugin for XMPlay and the like, and players for linux etc. - which is a huge difference to Renoise, where you are required to actually use Renoise to play the file (remember that e.g. AHX support is also not directly built into XMPlay). My biggest concern is more that most people would probably use MPTMs because they want to use plugins, and these are of course not supported in external applications. And if you don't use plugins, there are not that many reasons to prefer MPTM over IT.
