AOL Mod Files Group or Keyword?

(1/2) > >>

robbumon:
This is my first post! :)

Mod files and trackers were my first step into music creation, and would often upload my work into AOL, MANY years ago. There was a comment and rating system on there, and it was my first time getting feedback on music. This is old AOL, but not the earliest, but certainly not the latest. I think this is prior to AOL implementing a web browser.

I would love to try and track it down, and if I can't find my own, I wonder if I could run into some old tracks I loved listening to when I was younger.

Do you think I've got a shot of finding anything? Thanks!

Are you talking about having an actual web-space to upload your modules back in the day? or are you talking about things like the old Newsgroups (Usenet) we used to upload modules to?

Wayback Machine would be my first thought https://archive.org/web/

If you released a few modules, you could try looking on Modland or AMP just in case they got archived by someone..

Depending on the era the Wayback Machine most likely won't include any AOL stuff which was separate from the WWW. Since they mention that it was before the web browser area (early 90s?), this might be the case.

I have no idea what's in these file libraries here, but maybe they are worth a shot: https://archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22AOL%22&page=2

Thanks everyone for the tips. My memory isn't great, but it was definitely not a web interface in AOL. It was one of those group or keyword things.

I'm remembering I used the .mtm format so much back then, so it's helping me narrow down my searches.

I'm looking through Archive.org and Modland now, thank you both for the tips!

Axxy:
Also, did you use a nickname/alias back then?

Hornet archive another place to try.

I know I'm going back into the dark ages here, but I remember an old website called Altered Perception back in the day that contained some of those obscure formats, and I believe they were merged into the ModArchive a number of years ago.

Failing that, do you remember any titles of your modules, i have well over 600 .mtm as well.
