Title: how do i start making tracker music
Post by: BLUΞ on September 24, 2024, 18:12:02
i was listening to deus ex OST and decided to finally create something in these programs, i remember poking around in famitracker when i was younger so i downloaded milkytracker and stumbled upon a problem. I don't know where to start. I know how to navigate through the menus, place notes and etc but as i'm writing this message i poorly know which button coresponds to which note and don't even get me started on the effects. I know what vibrato does, what are octaves and i have a decent sense of rhythm but the moment i do something i consider "wrong" i just drop it. I have some samplepacks and that i used (plus from some other .mods that i liked). So i'm asking you people, how did you started creating music on these simple, yet powerful tools and what tips can you give me :)

i started creating tracker music in 2015, when i was 8. as obvious as it may be, my oldest stuff was SHIT. i used openmpt until 2019, then i shifted to fl studio, then ableton, then i shifted back to openmpt in 2023 and have since been using it alongside ableton.

from my experience, do NOT start with milkytracker. start with openmpt. it's got a far less confusing UI.

honestly, the best piece of advice i can give is to just experiment; figure out what you like best, then execute it in a way that you see fit. your first mods likely won't sound good at all, but don't let that discourage you! keep experimenting with it, and soon, you'll be making some pretty damn good modules.

Or just load some modules into any tracker program, watch and listen as they play. I'm also pretty sure there are guides online detailing commands and keys layouts to help get you started....

I too were listening to the Deus Ex OST and got the idea to at least try to make a single song with a tracker lol
