Title: It's possible to use an external mic to record on Nitrotracker?
Post by: nicanor5 on July 10, 2008, 22:23:16
Hello everyone.

I was wondering if it's possible to connect a non-nintendo mic to the DS and use to record on the Nitrotracker.

I want so because the DS' built-in mic isn't very good, I would like to record sounds on the go without having to depend on that little mic.

Maybe I was wondering if any kind of mic can be conected via an jack adapter to DS.

If anyone knows how to build and adapter like that, please tell me.

Thank you very much.

Saludos from Colombia.

The DS's microphone jack uses a non-standard connector, but you can buy a DS headset to have an external mic. If you're into soldering you can attach a standard jack to the cable of the DS headset so you can connect any mic.

Valid idea, take due care to seek advice if the connector is meant for a specific type of mic-insert. Got to check if it will run a Dynamic insert or phantom-voltage supplied electret in those headsets.

The idea is pretty cool. The DS as an ultra portable field recorder.

If you are going to add a mic, you may run into a line bias. This will create a hiss over your recording.

A normal mic, that's XLR, is different input levles then a line levle input, like a headphone (1/8th) jack. It's simply a decrese in bandwidth. To compinsate for then, they amplify the signal inside the hardware, and this is where you get a hiss from. Somethines it's not bad: it can range from a hiss from a audio tape, to almost static.

I do LOVE the idea though. Is the mic on the headset any good?
