Title: Multichannel recording always on
Post by: javamannen2 on October 20, 2008, 23:54:12
Hi!

The Multichannel recording checkbox on the Config.I/O page doesn't seem to actually do anything. Multichannel recording appears to be always enabled (assuming you have record enabled 2 or more tracks).

I will have a look at it.

try enableing the "editing" checkbox....

Well, that only affects non-realtime editing, doesn't it?

The only reason I wrote this silly bug report :D is that I'm in the process of learning MilkyTracker inside out and I'm trying to figure out what every control and every option on every page does. It's been quite a bit of detective work ;) Sure, it's been fun to figure out what things like "Instr. backtrace" mean, but the documentation is somewhat incomplete.

So anyway, I found this little checkbox and I can't figure out what it's doing, and it kinda bugs me, that's all  ;D

that's not correct!. milky's live-mode is quite good and you can jam on your channels pretty fast if you know the shortcuts and how patterns are handeled by the replayer..... i wish the keyboard handling would be a bit smoother though..

btw...:yesterday i found out what the little "w" button is all about... =)

Was that with or without the help of the FAQ?

8ch: Yes, I know how live recording in Milky works, though my PC keyboard chops leave a lot to be desired :D I'm a bit more adept with a real MIDI keyboard, but I don't have one a.t.m. so I mostly step-edit.

It's just that I don't notice any difference in the program's behavior whether the "Multichannel Recording" option is activated or not.

Now that I've done some more experimenting I've found that you can shift+right-click a scope to solo/unsolo recording, similar to right+left-clicking for mutes. Nice easter egg! But this should really be documented...

raina: is that a loaded question? :P it was without though..

javamannen2: did you rec.-mark your channels?

Just joking and pointing out that the WIP documentation covers that, if not much else. ;)

8ch: Yes!
Just to reiterate once more: I *know* how to do multichannel recording in Milky (Just record-mark a few channels, make sure Follow is on, press space if you're not in edit mode, Ctrl+enter and jam away, there's nothing to it!)  :D
As I've said a couple of times now, the only thing I don't get here is what actual function is performed by the "Multichannel Recording" option, because I really can't see the difference. Sorry if I'm getting boring now...

Yeah, I should have expressed myself more clearly.

will you tell me what instr-backtrace is then? heheh!

OK, it works like this:
When you enter a new note in the pattern editor, the currently selected instrument will not be used. Instead, the instrument of the preceding note on the same channel will be "inherited".

Sure, I'd like to chip in.

I think that would fall under the planned wiki user's guide. It has its perks compared to a monolithic document, where updates depend on a single person's motivation. I think this is further emphasized by the spare time nature of the project. Naturally you (and everybody) else would be more than welcome to contribute to it.

Thanks, I'd also forgotten what the hell that did. ;)

javamannen2 and 8ch: Since you both expressed interest, I've uploaded a Milkytracker skeleton document here: http://modarchive.org/forums/index.php?topic=1265.10

Perhaps you'd like to download it, fill in some of the incomplete sections (in red) and upload those changes?

Many sections are already filled out. I think I copied the explanation of instr-backtrace from this thread. ;)
