Title: Help needed: Wikipedia entry for The Mod Archive
Post by: m0d on December 01, 2008, 12:22:09
Now, having seen many tracker related articles on Wikipedia that actually link to resources on this website, The Mod Archive, I got the feeling that The Mod Archive has so far been left out in the cold since it doesn't have a page on Wikipedia (awwww!).

Considering TMA is and has been a staple of the tracking community for well over a decade, doesn't it deserve a mention? I sure think so! ;)

So, a proposition: I am unfamiliar with Wikipedia page creation, but I imagine it's not too difficult however as I am sure many of you out there are aware; most of the articles you come across on Wikipedia are not written by the primary sources (vanity pages) but by dedicated and loyal followers of their causes. This is definitly the case for most of the articles related tracking I have come across.

The discussion we are having on the forums right now far has established the fact that vanity pages on Wikipedia are frowned upon and are removed, which is of course appropriate, but that's not what I have in mind.

Instead, a community lead and researched page would be so much better and more than I could possibly write. So, does anyone here have any ideas how we could start a page? If someone wants to go ahead and initiate the process, I'd be glad to help.

Edit: Reworded.

Well, I guess that some historical background could be copied straight from the website as a start. :)

I remember I created a page for Elwood.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elwood_(Finnish_musician)

For several months I had to fight for it and explain to wikipedia editors that Elwood is indeed a notable figure. Finally, the debates stopped and the page seems to be confidently sitting in the encyclopedia. So be ready to fight for TMA.

if they want to delete it, i don't see a reason for it as other sites like pouet.net also have their own entries.

Writing as a primary source is a good way of getting your article swiftly deleted because you generally have no sources to cite. It's then viewed as a "vanity page". Happened with MilkyTracker in the past. For now I'm letting followers write the article, citing documentation I've written. ;)

Which is precisely what I am on about... Glad to see we're on the same page :)

Okay gang.

I made a page and Notable'd it unto the next time zone. The writing style is pretty sludgy so I'll leave it to my betters to move it around.

Our illustrious m0d seems to like it!

"[Mon 03:07] <m0d> brilliant, thank you! I am going to bed now (it's past 3am, work in the morning). otherwise i'd have posted in the thread."

Someone edited out all my external links. I'm not sure what that means.

I didn't do it, but the list didn't look very appropriate. It's not like you need 20 references to show how great we are ;D
I guess you could pick some of them and add the as quotations...
Also, a description of the MOD format doesn't belong in that article.

I admitted as much in my remark that the list format was ugly. I just wanted to respond to the concerns that "no one knew us so they might nuke the article". I was hoping someone would pick the best 5 links and make them into something.

I just threw in the mod text  - no biggie that got moved.

I accomplished what I wanted - I got the page on the map, and it'll settle down shortly enough to be a nice little page.

Oh look. The Wiki page is still there. Mission Accomplished, Now With Fewer Troops.
