Title: Bryd0's first module: "Black Lava"
Post by: Bryd0 on August 06, 2013, 22:59:32
After getting used to MilkyTracker more and nagging some folk at the IRC channel on some stuff about it (Saga Musix included :P), I have finally made my first module, titled Black Lava. It is a goa-like tune with an interesting goa bass throughout it but I have to warn you that it's in its incomplete state for now, so these 30 seconds will be enough for your ears to take pleasure to ;)

Although, I have thoughts on having someone to help me develop my music in the future, and possibly form a two-man group. This'll give me less hassle on making more modules myself especially when I will be very busy with college soon. I can still make some simple beats to form the module's backbone, from random notes of module patterns I have written down :P So, download the zip folder contained and have a listen, and tell me what you think so far :)

For my own thoughts of it, I do admit that I think I've screwed up with the volume slide for the cymbal at the start and the snare at the end but I do like the combination of the bass and kick together :D

Well, it's an okay start, I guess... and you may want to replace those A commands by C commands in the first pattern - A is a slide command and doesn't really do what you probably had in mind.

Actually, I did have the C command for the first pattern but I just thought that didn't make the volume slide the way I wanted it to be, so I've made that change again.

Also, I tried to extend the module myself but, I'm having trouble trying to clone pattern #4 to have it as the sixth one, not directly after it. How can that be done?

(god, I'm such a noob at MilkyTracker...)

Well, for starters, the parameters of your Axx effects don't make sense. You should EITHER fill in the first digit OR the second one.The first few parameters there slide the volume up (but it's already at maximum so they do nothing) and then at the end, the A08 and A00 fade the volume down very quickly. I don't think that's what you wanted.

Regarding usage of MilkyTracker I can't help you, but I think what you want is the "Patn." edit box where you can change the pattern number of every order list entry.

Okay, thanks. And, I've rectified the volume slide.

Anything else I should change? I ask because I'm not too happy with the hi-hat and snare I gave it :\

Well, for starters, your hihat rhythm is weird, accent-wise. Try pushing it down a row.

I've fixed that, and it does sound a lot better. Does the snare sound okay to you though?

Well, there's not much to say about the snare.. it plays for about one second. :P

Thought so :P Anyway, I've worked on more on it despite having a limited amount of samples to use. Again, there may be some faults so please let me know how to improve on it again, then hopefully I can finally post this on the site :)

I'm sorry to say, but I have gotten a bad case of artist's block. So, this module is going to be unfinished for a long while. Also that I have no time to muck about with MilkyTracker as I am at college now. At least I tried.

No worries, we've all been there.

After getting used to MilkyTracker more, and got motivation back on working with the module, I am happy to announce that I've finally completed it. It is now three and a half minutes long and I like how it has turned out overall :)

So you know the drill... download, and listen :) I will be submitting it to the site if Saga or anyone else is satisfied with it.

Well, to be honest, with the stuff you added, it didn't get better. Now you have semi-random melodies (a common problem for beginners), sometimes even combining them to be even more random. Listen to the melody in pattern 14 (0E), channel 4 for example - it's some completely random buzzing which is disconnected from what the other lead on channel 5/6 is playing.

Actually, that's the melody playing at a low octave which was intended, just for a bit of bass boost (which does have a gradual note increase afterwards). And the melody itself was made in less than a second as I couldn't think of a more decent one. Melodies are a pain to make, if you want them to sound good :P How would you suggest that I make it sound better then?

Well, despite that piece of criticism, I have submitted it to the site anyway. How only will it take to get a submission screened though? Just wondering.

Well, that heavily depends on the situation and context. Since you're making a psychedelic tune, listen to other psytrance music and try to figure out how they structure their melodies. Most of the time you won't find semi-random melodies with notes on almost every 16th.

And the screening shouldn't be a problem as soon as someone gets around and clears the upload queue. ;)

Well this tune isn't really psychedelic trance, but more of a goa/techno hybrid. It only sounded goa from the goa bass I added, and it's hard to actually classify what genre a piece of music is :P Suppose you could call this "freestyle goa" but I don't know. Thanks for all your comments anyway :)

Well, I'd say this certain combination of bass drum sample and bass is more common in Psytrance than Goa. But there's not much point in arguing about that since Psytrance is just a goa spin-off anyway. :P

Spend more than a second on it. Use as much time as it takes to make something that sounds good to you. The "random buzzing" sound I think the sample makes it hard to tell that it's actually playing a melody at first, haha. Maybe if you layered it with something with a clearer tone.
