Title: reviewing the W-Files?
Post by: woolters on September 09, 2006, 12:07:59
Is anyone willing and able to review a few of my songs, the Woolters Files, please? I'm very curious about your opinion. :)

here are the links:

ambient5.xm (http://www.modarchive.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi/A/ambient5.xm):
this an ambient song of mine that I've made in a blurry mood.

reggae1.xm (http://www.modarchive.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi/R/reggae1.xm):
This is my newest Reggae tune. The first one after my tracking revival. It's short, but looped easily.

reggae5.xm (http://www.modarchive.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi/R/reggae5.xm):
I'm pretty proud of the guitar solo in this one. I hope you agree.

reggaeb.xm (http://www.modarchive.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi/R/reggaeb.xm):
One of my best.

reggaea.xm (http://www.modarchive.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi/R/reggaea.xm):
It has no title here, because I forgot to name it before I uploaded it. I hope you like it just as much

cocktail.xm (http://www.modarchive.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi/C/cocktail.xm):
The name says it all. It's a cocktail. ingredients: Jazz, R&B and Reggae. Quite catchy.

dixie1.xm (http://www.modarchive.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi/D/dixie1.xm):
I never felt so eager to start tracking as with this one. I was on holiday and saw a dixieland jazz band at a local fair. It inspired me, but I had to wait another 11 days before I could start tracking it. I think this one'll put a smile upon your face.

dixie2.xm (http://www.modarchive.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi/D/dixie2.xm):
I discovered that it is a great joy to track dixieland jazz. So here's the second.

You don't have to review them all, obviously. If you take a pick I'll be happy just as much.

Didn't I review one of your songs? In any case, I remember your modules being quite good and interesting. Especially since you are a somewhat new face around here.

EDIT: No, I was mistaken. It was Neonzip's "Cell Phone Tower"-something module I reviewed.

so will you review one then?
I'm desperately waiting for some comments.

I've added a new one as well.

here's an overview of my songs:

I would, if I was not being so terribly busy these days with senior high school, homework, chores and an enterprise to maintain. I tried to review someone else's module, but the spare time I had to do that ran out quite quickly. Got a halfdone review to finish, now. :|

I think you mentionned somewhere that you were a fan of reggae and dub rythms, so that tempted me to give your music a listen.  I haven't reviewed in a long time, but maybe I'll write a full review for some of these sometime.  But for now, some general comments:

ambient5.xm -- I thought this one was a little slow to start, but once it got going, I could really feel it.  I'm very impressed by the fantastic mood you were able to create in this one.   I actually felt the chills when your bass came in after the drumroll.  Beautiful strings.  I like the way you stopped it abruplty, too.  Very nice work.

reggae1.xm -- I adore this one.  I like the fade-ins especially.  And of course, you can't go wrong with that drop rythm.  Fantastic!

reggae5.xm -- Let me tell you, it's refreshing to hear music like this.  It's so light and carefree.  The volume did some erratic things for me when it got to that guitar solo thingy, but I'm sure that's XMPlay going bonkers on me.  Otherwise, that guitar solo is pretty cool.   8-)

reggaeb.xm -- Wow, I hardly noticed when my player switched over from reggae5.xm to this one; almost seamless transition.  I really like the more 'minor' sound you've got in this one.  It's almost like it tells a story, you know.  The organ is a nice touch.  That's one fine muted trumpet sample you've got there, too.  I can see why you are proud of this one.

reggaea.xm -- While I think this is the weaker one of the tunes you've linked up here, that's not to say it's bad.  The lead didn't work quite as well for me, and sometimes I thought the bass and the lead were clashing a little.  Nonetheless, there were some bits I did like, like parts of your intro, your beats and riffs, and so forth.

cocktail.xm -- Wow.  I rarely hear this genre of music properly done in a mod, so I have to give you a high five on this one.  You have such a good feel for rythm, that I envy you for it.  I don't know what else to say; this is really great.

dixie1.xm -- Hehe, yeah, this one did put a smile on my face.  :)  The beginning is a little weak, I think, but it grows on you.  Nice work with the brass and the tuba bassline.  I especially like that wonderful little bit towards the end there.  Very nice.

dixie2.xm -- Again, I thought it started a little weak, somehow, but towards about 1/3 into the tune, the whole thing tightens up and it really is pretty catchy.  I really enjoy this stuff, so good on you for venturing into this style of music.  Your brass work is just wonderful.

So anyway, those are just hodge-podge comments.  Once I've got some free time maybe I'll review a couple of these.  I didn't say much about reggae1.xm, even though it's my favourite tune out of these, so maybe I'll try to come up with more for a formal review sometime.  I think I might have a few things to say about ambient5.xm as well.

I'm a big fan.  Keep it up.  :D

Thank you very much for your short reviews.
I hope I'll be able to use your comments in my next tunes. :D

err... m0d?

Can I add these comments to my songs myself? Or do I have to wait till somebody else does it for me? Anyone?

Well, now I don't think you can comment on your own songs, regardless of whether you are quoting someone or not.

But, on a brighter note, I put up what I said here as comments to your songs on the archive.  I changed my words slightly for some of them, but essentially I said the same thing.  I had to think up some numbers (ratings) to put with the comments too, I suppose.  Have a look!  :D

EDIT:  yeah.. sorry for taking so long to upload the comments... I kind of forgot about it.  I have no good excuse, really.

You should go with the "I was busy" excuse and pretend you have a life. That's what I do. Oh, wait, but I am busy, busy, pissy, pissy. (I so got to get that song done) ;)

you don't have to have an excuse. You just forgot or didn't feel like doing it earlier :D
Your ratings turn everything to the good side :P
no seriously. didn't know you liked it that much. Thanks for the wonderful comments/ratings.

Yeah, your tunes are pretty good, woolters. I may post a comment on them sometime, too. But I usually prefer to make a full scale review instead, but what the heck. :)

yup, it's been a while, but I got to upload a new Reggae-tune once again :D

just a short one, made with pleasure, but I feel it lacks something...

any ideas?

There's no bass in it. An accoustic or pick bass would be nice in it. The song is simply lacking bass frequencies in general. I could not get any other impression because my mother was making noise in the kitchen which overvoiced the song.

I'll be back to comment further on it later. It seem like a shame that you've already uploaded it to TMA when you now were asking for what was missing.

:?:    no bass? The bass is in the first track! At first in 2 even, but I had to delete at track to surpress it a bit! are you sure you didn't accidentally turn it off? The bass is the most important instrument in Reggae. I would never forget a bass.

I actually can't stand reggae at all (that's why i won't review it or give a comment), but I can confirm that there's enough bass...

well now...
now that you've heard the bass (I suppose), does it make you wag your head? :)  And what do you think of the brass, the organ solo and the fact that it is a little more up-tempo?

When I said I thought I should have added a little more, I was wrong... it's complete like this, plus now it fits the title: It's a Likkle Ditty Ting :D

and did you notice I've uploaded 2 more songs lately?
Reggae8.xm and ReggaeE.xm

They're both very old ones of mine and at first I was a little anxious to upload them, but then I thought that I also should upload some oldies to show the progress I've been through over the years.

and yes m0d, I do have a Reggae-addiction :) and although I mainly upload reggae-files, I still consider myself a multistyle tracker. Maybe I should upload some other styles too, every now and then...

Hrmm, I'd say that you should not upload old crap even to allow comparisions with your todays tunes. But I'm certain the screening crew knows what they are doing, so I suppose that's fine, heh. :)

Well, I have not been very active in the tracking scene for a while. I've been badly busy latelly since it's nearing the end of the school year and the summer holidays are coming up (well, holiday means taking care of procastrinated work for me) so of course, I have exams every or every second week until June. Yuck! So, no, I have not relistened to your song, Woolters. I should come back to that when I have some spare time again.

 he didn't say old crap, did he?   Just older material, which from the looks of it so far isn't something that would be a problem on the archive

exactly.... My choice was well-considered. I found these files acceptable enough to be added. I also improved one of them by changing some old samples to newer, better ones.

What a great change of pace!  I've listened to one of the reggae pieces and am listening to a dixieland piece right now.  I'm downloading the rest of your stuff for later.

Your stuff brought a smile to my face.  I'll try to post a comment or two when I've had a chance to listen to the rest.  Nice use of different instruments.  The effects you used with the dixieland piece fit in perfectly.  The organ in the reggae number I heard sounds very authentic.

so have you had a chance to listen to the rest yet?
and would you mind to also download my >>Woolters - Boulevard Sauntering.xm<< (http://modarchive.org/download.php/W/wltrs_-_boulevard_sauntering.xm) and comment on it? It's the latest of my tunes and I'm quite satisfied with it, but I'd like to see some additional comments :)

By the way, I'm working on a Austrian folksong ( :D ). Are there any people interested in this type of music to be added to the TMA (it would certainly add to the diversity of the Archive) or should I abort it and never think, let alone speak, of such vulgar things again? :D

Yes, m0d, I've downloaded a number of files lately, but I'm still thinking of something constructive to say about them. I think I'll be the reggae-commenter here ;) :P

Alright, so it's been a while.
I've actually uploaded the Austrian folksong that I mentioned here earlier (which isn't austrian, but slovenian as I found out) and did some swing things.
Is there anyone willing, able and interested in commenting on (one of) my last 3 songs?

wltrs_-_tribute_to_slavko.xm (http://modarchive.org/data/downloads.php?moduleid=160769#wltrs_-_tribute_to_slavko.xm)

wltrs_-_bliss.xm (http://modarchive.org/data/downloads.php?moduleid=160071#wltrs_-_bliss.xm)

wltrs_-_jinglejazz.xm (http://modarchive.org/data/downloads.php?moduleid=159203#wltrs_-_jinglejazz.xm)

They received a fair share of downloads, but nobody has taken up the task of commenting on them yet. I'd be very grateful if you did.
Thanks in advance.
