Title: Other Interests
Post by: woolters on September 11, 2006, 23:15:15
I know this is a gathering of mostly musicians, so I was wondering and pondering what other musical time killers keep you from doing your homework properly, besides tracking.

To melt the ice ánd to give you a slight idea of my intentions, I will provide a few links that rob me of my precious time:

DCI:
http://www.dci.org

What is DCI? Check out this vid:
DCI World Champions 2004: The Cavaliers (http://video.google.nl/videoplay?docid=-4743365714080843515&q=DCI+Cavaliers) :thumbup:

And one of the best Snare Drummers. A bit of a show off, but great sense of entertainment and, what's more, great skill:
Individuals&Ensembles: Ivan Pacheco Snare Solo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1WKmoUrDiQ&eurl=)

DCE:

Reggae ofcourse:
Morgan Heritage - She's Still Loving Me (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcCxDbMeFfo)

List of all videos of Morgan Heritage on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=morgan+heritage)

Of course this wasn't all, but only a short impression of things that keep me busy. :)

I do not really understand this poll. Are you asking what we other music-related things we do on our spare time? Well, if that is the case, I do play quite often on my Yamaha synth. Sometimes I pick up the flute and play a tune, too, but that does not happen too often.

It's not really a poll.  :)
I was wondering what other musical things people of TMA find interesting, which we all should have seen.
 :thumbup:
Your answer is quite sufficient 8-)

I could ofcourse expand it a bit:

Do these interests influence your tracking? If yes, how?

Well.. not tracking anymore, but I guess I can still answer to this  :)
I've studied classical piano for 12-13 years and studied music theory. I also loaned couple of months ago a chromatic harmonica from my friend for learning a bit. Liked the idea of sitting outside somewhere and just playing and drinking beer   8-)
I've had also few bands varying from folk music to metal and old rock, unfortunately I don't have any bands atm, though.

Cool!!!

There are so many things I want to learn to play:

-piano (I already know a little)
-brass (trumpet, trombone, Tuba)
-woodwinds ( saxophones in different sizes, and so on)
-Accordeon
-Uillean Pipes (Irish bagpipes)
-Bodhrán
-and many more...

I could give an entire list of what music styles I also like, but I think you get bored after a while.

I hope you understand by now that this is a very open and free topic. Dump your links if you're willing and able to go through all the effort and provide us with some fine (in your opinion) music.

Do you want to practice on the piano without having one? You could get a tracker with piano-like key setup, e.g. GoatTracker, MilkyTracker or ProTracker (for Amiga). :)

I wish I had some drums to play on. I miss them. It's no fun only being able to hit the kness, the shoulders and the ground, pretending they are a snare, hi-hat and a bass drum.

My girlfriend has a piano.
I play in a marching band so I could start learning brass or woodwinds right away.

Eagle, if you can't afford a drum set... try the sink! :D
the iron bowl has a nice djembé sound and the rim has a nice bass because of all the chests underneath it.

try this link for African rhythms:

I'd like to learn playing drums as well, but this would be expensive and i think my body is not made to do such movements (hard to explain, don't laugh^^)

I play piano, and have been for many, many years.  In fact, it's been so long since I started playing that I should be a superb performer and pianist by now.  I'm not though, because I interest more simply in learning to play and experiment with interesting sheet music, rather than to excel in technique.  There's just so many interesting sounds, such a range of texture you can achieve on the piano I find...

You want to learn accordion eh?  My dad owns an impressive collection of old restored button box accordions, and I've taught myself to play some tunes on there.  It's easy to learn button box by ear.  Just get your hands on one and have a hoot.  Keyboard accordion, on the other hand, is a little less intuitive to play.

Anyway, yes, piano, as with anything I ever do or experience affects my state of mind, thus affecting my tracking.  Exposure to different sounds and experimentation on piano inspires me the most, I think.

I probably could afford a drum set (I got quite some cash these days thanks to the fact that I only buy a few bags of sweets per month and rarelly anything else). But where would I put it? That's the problem. :|

But then again, I am sure I could ask Kefka about some play locals in the area. As far as I know, he plays drums now and then for a band he and his buds have started or something.

As far as traditional instruments go, I took several years of piano lessons and played the drums and the tuba at school. I've also been in a couple of bands mostly for fun; nothing very interesting.

I've always wanted to try combining tracked music with live instruments, particularly chip style.

Jojo- drums are expensive, but incredibly easy to learn to play. I taught lessons for two years. I even taught a 5 year old kid who had to wear leg braces to walk how to play. (no joke!) Not because I'm a great teacher, but because it's so easy.

I just don't want you to be discouraged from trying! :)

I learned to play some basic drum progressions just using a chair and my wee hands and legs. It took me only 2 weeks of intensive practice - which you can practically do anywhere. Tap with your leg to simulate a bassdrum, right hand as hi-hat and left hand as snare.

Easy rock comp:
Bassdrum, hi-hat, snare, hi-hat - loop.

Equaly easy rock comp:
Bassdrum, X, snare, X - loop.
Hit the hi-hat at all beats, including "X" (meaning none.).

Try that or just find someone who can show you. :thumbup:

using abbreviations could help here...

hh = Hihat
bd = Bass Drum
sd = Snare Drum

now I'm going to put it in a pattern.

x = hit

if you're really getting into it and want to learn more, check out this drumstick manufacturer's website:

http://www.vicfirth.com/features_drumset.html

there are a lot of online lessons on this thing, and a lot of other things if you go to

(I always use Vic Firth)  :grinno:

I didnt recognize and understand the forms they were making..  sorry.

I guess you have a different understanding of art in america....
Title: Re: Other Interests

err...
1st of all, I'm not an American. Never was, never will and never want to be. I'm very proud to be Dutch!
(http://www.desocialclub.com/htmlpages/uploads/Agenda/2007/vlag.jpg)

And then about the DCI vid... it's not about recognisable shapes, because that would bind every corps to a limited number of forms. It's about being on time at the right spot (putting down an image at the exact moment in the music) and deadly precision in performing musically and geographically at the same time. That requires more practice than you probably had imagined. The level of excellence of these corps is stunning. They run auditions every year to select only the best performers. You hear that audience? They're going wild because they can't believe their eyes and ears. But hey, there's no accounting for taste, is there now?  :P
Do you have any idea how difficult it is to keep a single line straight with a corps? Do you have any idea how difficult it is to make any shape you saw in that vid? Do you have ANY idea how difficult their music arrangements are? I'm not angry with you, because many people don't understand the difficulty of it, but it's just that you should have looked up some more info on it first. ;)

Hey, maybe a USB Drumkit (http://"http://www.firebox.com/product/1573?src_t=sbk&src_id=usbdrumkit") is the thing for you.
I tell ya, if I had the spare cash I'd probably get one of these babies to thrash around on....

personally, I play guitar badly (but my 4 month old son seems to be an appreciative audience..) and stand-up bass (acoustic) not-so-badly. Only I don't own a bass at this point in time (nor would I have the space, sadly...)
