Title: MOD: Funk Repeat
Post by: Saga Musix on November 25, 2006, 21:19:39
Hello, i just read some stuff about the original MOD format, and there i've seen an effect called "funk repeat", but it wasn't implemented in any PC tracker because it was too specific (Amiga). does anyone know how this effect sounded like?

Could you post a reference to where you read about this "funk repeat"?

I've been using ProTracker 1.2 a lil, and as far as I know there are no effect like that. Perhaps it was a preliminary 8xy effect? 8xy is today Set Panning but actually did not exist on the original Amiga ProTracker (the channels were already panned, or actually, 2 channels were outputted on the left speakers and the other 2 on the right speaker). I believe it was FastTracker II or TakeTracker that implemented Set Panning as 8xy.

The effect should be EFx. It isn't used in other trackers.

Ah, and if i remember correctly, it is mentioned in the ST3 documentation. in modplug, it has an entirely new function and i didn't read about it in other trackers as well (but i remember that i read some other inforamtion about this effect some time ago...where?)

Hmm, I've never seen EFx in ModPlug. But I'll go check if it exists in the ScreamTracker 2 documentation.

I found the sentenced i looked for in the ST3 documentation:
Quote

The Protracker effects left out, thus, are Set filter and Funkrepeat.
Most songs play fine without them, though.

Alright...

Aye, the documentation of Fast Tracker II says in the doc index:
Quote
3.15.14 Funk it! (Not implemented)
Or something quite like that. So we've proven it's existance, but it's still unknown what it does, how it works and what it's for.

I could test using the effect on ProTracker 1.2 on Kefka's Amiga 600.

holy crap, i googled the web for this effect, and i found some usefull information on page 2 (of 3)... the Funk Repeat effect only existed in the original PT 1.0 rountines, it was replaced by "Invert Loop" later. I read this on nearly every page i could find. Both effects seemed to "trash samples", though, so hence why noone used them. on bottom of page 2, i found the final explanation (http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:AltvX0QhR0UJ:www.digitalbeatmusic.org/download/trackers%2520handbook/1.TXT+%22Funk+repeat%22+%22protracker%22&hl=de&ct=clnk&cd=17&gl=de) of this effect - it seems to be very rare on the web. as this website is not online anymore, i linked to the google cache. in case it will be replaced, here's the original document:

Quote from: www.digitalbeatmusic.org/download/trackers%20handbook/1.TXT (online again, but who knows...)
Command EF is the Funk Repeat command (Huge thanks to T-Jay for this
info!).  The command needs a short loop to work.  It moves the loop through
the whole length of the sample, e.g.:
You have a sample that is 10000 (decimal) bytes long.  You have set the
sample loop to 0-1000.  When EFx is used, the loop will be moved to 1000-
2000, then to 2000-3000 etc.  After 9000-10000 the loop is set back to 0-
1000.  The speed of the loop "movement" is defined by x.  I don't know
exactly how the speed is specified, but E is two times as slow as F, D is
three times as slow as F etc.  EF0 will turn the Funk Repeat off and reset
the loop (to 0-1000).
Some information can be slightly wrong, e.g. the loop MAY be moved from 0-
1000 to 1002-2002, but it isn't important.  Very few trackers actually
support it.

EDIT: As of July 2009, the site is offline again - If anyone wants that manual - let me know, I still have it.

in fact, i would like to have this effect - it sounds much cooler than just adding offset effects :hrrhrr:

quite a few people have used the effect, here's a few examples off the top of my head:

me (urea geller (http://modarchive.org/module.php?59319), urethra franklin (http://modarchive.org/module.php?59323))
groo (pilkku (http://modarchive.org/module.php?67751), kukko (http://modarchive.org/module.php?99929))
andy (stingless pen (http://modarchive.org/module.php?66609))

xmplay and the winamp oldsk00l plugin emulate EFx quite ok.

// Edit by saga: updated modarchive links, in case anyone still reads this :D

this effect is also usefll to simulate "cutoff" like effects if you use the right sample

oh, i listened to that tune during my vacation (i had my mod archive with me :D), but only with modplug tracker, so i have to compare it to the xmplay output now...

Afaik XMPlay doesn't support the funk repeat command (feel free to correct me when I'm wrong) but it has got way better support for oldschool mods than modplug tracker, that's for sure.

i didn't even say that modplug has good support for oldschool formats ;D but supports even more formats than XMPlay, that's for sure.
And i think XmPlay reserved EFx for syncs, but it could also be E2x, i'm not completely sure...

Indeed modplug supports quite some formats but I wouldn't recommend it for playing them cause the support for most of them is rather poor. There are better players/converters for some of the obscure formats out there.
Btw. E2x is fine portamento down.

oh, okay, i never felt comfortable with XM Format, i thought that the Exx effects are the same like Sxx in IT files. S2x is unused and i checked, it's used for syncing modules to BASS.DLL callback functions.

there was an ooooold ms-dos tracker who supports the Funk repreat btw.. (forget the name)... this tracker supports also saving soundtracker modules with 15 samples.

okay, that's what Ian says at the un4seen forums about the way xmplay works:
Quote from: Ian @ un4seen
XMPlay treats EFx as "FunkIt" (when in PT1 mode).

Actually, looking at the code just now, I think EFx is treated as "Invert Loop".

Looking at the ProTracker 1.0 and 1.1 playback code, XMPlay is doing what PT1.1 does. It's a bit confusing, as the PT1.1 source labels/etc still say "funk", but it does seem to be inverting the loop data. I'm not sure what the PT1.0 code is meant to be doing :D
