Title: Oldest module on the archive?
Post by: Slender on October 01, 2019, 05:50:25
I tried looking for a way to find this info and also searched the forums to see if this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find anything. I wonder what the first module added to the archive was?

I don't think it's not possible to find out from the current archive what the first added file was, because today's site has practically nothing in common with how TMA started in 1996. Maybe you can figure it out from old Web Archive snapshots: https://web.archive.org/web/19970415114647/http://www.modarchive.com/

Apart from that, the oldest known module (disregarding Mod Archive) is Amegas (https://modarchive.org/module.php?159627).

Ah, OK. Unfortunately this seems to be an issue with many module collections, I tried asking the Modland admins a similar question, and they said that it wasn't possible for them to find that info, because the collection had moved to a new server at one point and the timestamps were lost in the migration, which is why many files have the timestamp of 9/13/2004. I think The Mod Archive's copy of amegas is resaved as Protracker, though, should the original be added?

I'd be amazed of anyone could tell what their first module added would be.

I just checked a few random folders on mine and a few early modules are dated 1979, so 6 years before the Amiga was released and 8 years before Soundtracker was released (not sure if there was another form of tracker module prior to soundtracker?).

I had a few dated 00, so maybe 1900 and pre-millenium bug (remember that? /lol).
I've always tried to keep datestamps as original as possible.

First mod was probably by Karsten Obarski i suppose..

Quite honestly I think it's a non-issue. There is not so much value in that information apart from pointing at the module and saying "look, this is the first one!". It's just as valuable (or not) as any other module on the archive, I think.

There once were even more copies, I think there was a SoundTracker version but it was slightly corrupted, which might be why the ProTracker version survived. Anyway, I have replaced it now with the SoundTracker version from ModLand.

Some file systems start counting in 1980 so I imagine this one transitioned through some timezones and thus ended up in 1979.
