Title: Tracks with Modplug Macros suitable for TMA?
Post by: woolters on May 15, 2007, 19:14:37
I use Modplug Tracker for tracking music, but the macros that I have embedded in some songs won't be recognised by other players/trackers, which is essential for the proper expression of my tracks.
How should I go about this? Blatantly throw them on TMA and mention somewhere that they should be played in Modplug Tracker only? Or don't put them on here at all? :?

don't hesitate to upload them. i uploaded even modules that require VSTs. i know that many ppl won't like it, but i don't care. firstly, i gave a hint to my VST tutorial on my artist page, then included the link in the brand-new song comment function and last but not least, there's a hint in the module file itself. and btw, the only players that you should support are IMHO modplug and xmplay only. who cares about Impulse Tracker, OmniPlayer, the PB routines and so on today? people mostly still have them but only beacuse of nostalgia. and as far as i know, xmplay supports IT macros.

but this is only my opinion.

I think it would be highly prefered that the modules uploaded are in general compatible with the most common players. Too bad, the use of VSTs in ITs are MPT only (and require the download of the VST involved). As for resonance and frequency cutoff and such macros, they are ModPlug only, too and for the same reason unrecommended.

Yet, if you wish to use those features, use them. Don't limit yourself. But I'd look into the possibility of finding a workaround so everyone can enjoy your module with a hassle.

If you want everyone to be able to easily enjoy your module without incompatibilities and such stuff, just start exporting to MP3 and offer the MP3 as an alternative for those who can't be troubled with installing MPT (or can't). Saga and Rikimbo does that on their personal websites - which is a model I think works great. :)

You are wrong here. Resonance, Cutoff AND macros were introduced in Impulse Tracker ;)

Using the Zxx effect, yes. But I mean the instrument stuff. Oh, and MPT's macros are incompatible with the ones used in IT by default. But you can adjust that in the module options (where you select amount of channels).

err... i didn't have any problems with Zxx in IT - if you enable to SAVE The macros within the module (recommended), nothing can go wrong. and in the *original* MPT, there was no new stuff for instruments, i think (except assigning VSTi instruments), but all in all, a "normal" modplug track is still compatible. but i am not talking about OpenMPT now (which i use). But OpenMPT has a "compatiblity export" function for IT files, so again, there's no prob.

Filter/resonance envelopes were also introduced in IT already (do some research before posting facts, will ya?). So xmplay supports them fine.
If you've redefined the actual filter ranges, at least IT has an option to embed the midi macros tables inside the .it so that all common players should be able to play the filters correctly (I'm not sure if it's IT only, or can xmplay/modplug fetch the redefined ranges too). But I don't know if modplug's developers ever bothered to add such an option.

that's exactly what i said.
modplug can also embed macros.

The low pass resonant filter used in Impulse Tracker is different from the one used in MPT. They won't sound the same.

That is true. Unfortunately many effects do not work the same way in IT and mpt. The differences aren't huge with the resonance filters though, so it's not a big deal.
