Probably, you will need to find some software that has support for live MIDI IN recording. Google around a bit and see what you find. If you find anything, put a link here. I need a software like that too (but haven't had a chance to search for one just yet).

first of all, a MIDI IN can't play anything, that would be MIDI OUT ;P
It really depends on your tracker / sequencer software and on your MIDI device.
Example: My synth (yamaha cs1x) has a switch labeled "host select". i can select "pc 1", "pc 2", "mac", "midi". although i have a PC, i have to select Midi...

MIDI IN/OUT labels tend to confuse me (probably because it is not correctly labeled on my keyboard, my MIDI interface or some other device I have), but I will assume OUT means output to a device (e.g. a keyboard) and IN means input from a device (e.g. the same keyboard). Assuming all this, I do believe he meant he was trying to record MIDI messages sent from a keyboard/synth/controller into a MIDI file on his computer.

With some software I have, I can play notes sent from my keyboard (e.g. when I play a few notes or turn on auto accompanient), but I cannot record them. Well, I can with a tracker. But then it is only on one selected channel and not polyphonic. Furthermore, it does not exactly allow me to save the data as a MIDI file.

And you are right, Saga. MIDI IN can't play anything. Only the recieving device can. ;)

right eagle, manufacturers tend to swap IN and OUT (so it's from the "synth's point of view" and not the "host's point of view" which is IN or OUT), but that's not the important thing, it's rather important how it's used :D

sorry if i didn't speak clearly, but i've been using midi hardware and software for years.
anyway, i'm using milkytracker and sometimes it records midi notes and other times it doesnt. it just plays back the note messages i send it.
before it didn't even play back notes at all. doe this thing have mood swings or something?

The MilkyTracker forum is here: http://modarchive.org/forums/index.php?board=30.0 . If before the MIDI input wasn't working, it probably wasn't configured and enabled (which means default settings) but obviously you have done that since. The only thing I can think of for the recording working and then again not working would be the record mode state which is easy to spot from the color of the Rec button. It's red when enabled. :)

I compared with my equipment, and it makes sense now. Thanks! :)

Well, that sounds like MIDI wasn't configured/enabled again. You can do that in system menu > Preferences... (see the attached picture). If that doesn't help, there's not much more you can do in Milky's side. If you're certain MIDI input works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't, well that's new to us and very strange, especially if MIDI input is working fine in other programs.

yea i always check the preferences when somethigns wrong and i've never had these problems in any other program. i think this should be moved to the bugs section?

You mean you can hear the samples being played in milkytracker but the notes don't end up in the pattern, right?

... that's almost impossible :)
Well at least there is nothing wrong with your midi setup. Keep in mind that even if record is enabled you need to mark the channels which take up notes for midi recording with the left mouse button (a red dot will appear on the channel). And check the recording settings too.
