Look what I made! / A remix for Romeo Knight fans...
« on: March 20, 2009, 17:22:27 »
This is a studio remix of one of the earliest modules by Romeo Knight aka Eike Steffen.   It was released in 1988.   I tried to imagine what it would be like if the original started off life as a studio release for a TV program/film - hence the retro late 80's style   :)

The original was from D.O.C. demo 2 of November 1988:

any news there? the st-01 domain seems to be still empty  ???

Hi Guys - in answer to the Dr's question... very frustratingly, the chap who was putting together the website for me dissappeared without trace   If anyone is interested in putting the website bones/engine together then I am happy to create as much content as I've time for.

...not forgotten - just on the back burner.....

Cheers,

Dan.

Hello All,

Since I've spent the entire day in the studio remaking this Amiga oldie you might as well have a sneak preview before I upload it onto www.AmigaRemix.com: (Complications by Tomas Danko)

:)  Thanks for that Dr....  I will check them out at the weekend.  I'm slightly surprised I missed D50 Gato...  It's possible I've deleted the factory preset off my D550.

Cheers,

Dan.

Just to give you a taster of some of the websites content here is a quick example of two of the original studio synths in action:

The Infamous ST:01 MonoBass used absolutely everywhere in Amiga modules and the slightly unusual ST:01 TineWave.

MonoBass was sampled from the Yamaha DX-21 - a classic 4 operator FM synth of the era (circa 1986) and Tinewave is from the wonderful Roland D50.  Both ST-01 samples have carried over the original synth preset names.

Here is a quick MIDI sequence converted from a track I'm sure you will all recognise using the original studio instruments - notice that although MonoBass sounds very similar to the Amiga sample TineWave sounds rather different.  This is mainly due to the fact that the Amiga sample is very distorted which has given it a much punchier sound.  The same sort of processing could be applied to the studio sound - something I will have to do when I start recreating ST-01 in HQ:

Sampling / Re: ST-01: Snare1 source confirmed thanks to Dr_Mabuse!!

:)  It had to be either RX21 or MR10....  I too have the sample set from the RX21 - and yes - there are Claps1.  Not sure why some of you can't see my Sound Forge waveforms - they are coming up on my screen when I view the posting.   Shame really because seeing the original 16 bit waveform along with the 8 bit one is quite interesting.

It's interesting looking at and listening carefully to the ST-01 samples as you start to notice that some have been processed, transposed, truncated etc ie. they are not just samples made directly off the original instruments - they have been played with.

The distortion on some of the percussion is horrendous compaired to the real thing but this has helped to make some of the drum samples sound very punchy.

I also downloaded the data disk from Dynamic Drums and sure enough there are several ST-01 perc samples - the only thing is that they are IDENTICAL to the ST-01 samples and so I now wonder who robbed these samples from which package??   Clearly Dynamic Drums were sampled so although this is interesting it still doesn't help to answer which studio gear was sampled in the first place.

Cheers,

Dan.  :)
