Website News Archive / The Mod Archive 2007 Torrent
« on: April 19, 2007, 17:34:55 »
:breakpage:
:breakhead:
A reminder to those who want to get our last torrent archive.
:breakhead:

The last few remaining sharers (seeds) are starting to disappear so you had better get it while you can, and of course - help share (seed) it yourself when you've got it all.

This is the previous torrent announcement:

For those of you who want to obtain the ENTIRE archive, and I'm not just talking the same old 13GB torrents we had up in the test phase of 2005 and 2006, but the ENTIRE 29GB of compressed modules!

This is how it is going to work.

a) You download and install a Bit Torrent client of your own choice.
b) You go to the Torrent Tracker of ours and download the "modarchive_2007_official_snapshot_120000_modules" Torrent file.
c) You open up the torrent file in your Bit Torrent client and CHOOSE which parts of the archive you want to download.
d) One you have downloaded it, you keep it online for some time to "seed" back to the network. If you leave it online long enough for your share ratio to go above 1:1 then that's great and *that* is what we need. :)

In order to give as much flexibility and work within the constraints of the standard Zip architecture, the archive is split up alphabetically into double-letter sorting. Here are some examples:

Modules with filenames like:

'aamuaamu.it' will be in AA.zip
'elysium.mod' will be in EL.zip

In total, there are just over 1000 separate zip files.

After you have completed download of one of these archives, you can literally pick up one and drag it into your player (as long as it supports loading zips directly, like XMPlay with the xmp-zip plug-in).

There is absolutely no need to uncompress the archives if you have a capable player. On the other hand, although I won't recommend - you can de-archive these files. It won't cost you much in the way of disk space, because there is no compression on these sub-archives themselves. Instead, the modules themselves are transferred straight off our data repository and each and every one of them is individually zipped. Now if you wanted to uncompress those (good luck! pfft) you'd be needing about 47gb.

Even if you don't have 29GB of disk space, that's quite OK, you can (as mentioned earlier) choose which sub archives you want to download from within your Torrent client before you begin the download.

Well, that's about it

Good luck everyone and happy sharing!

View the full post for the torrent download link and more details!

The Torrent is available HERE it is still being initially seeded but we have got a head start to deal with the load for the first 50% of the torrent. The rest will trickle down over the next few days :)

Below is my previous post about the torrent:
Quote

The structure of the provided files will allow more flexibility on how you chose to download them. Torrent clients can choose which sub-archive files to download out of a multi-file torrent, so this means you will have more choice over which bits you want to download and keep. You'll see what I mean when the torrent(s) are put up.

- No HTML song lists included. I thought these would be useful in the last bunch, but they turned out to be more trouble than they were worth, so I've dropped those.

- A lot of reported broken files have been fixed or removed, it is clear that there will still be a couple that are broken due to the fact I have not been able to get around to doing them all. There will also be a few filename collisions for windows users - that's just tough though as it's something of an inheritance of how the archive used to handle its files. There will also be a notable number of duplicates - not in the hash sense - but in the audio sense, since people will insist on uploading modules that have been modified only slightly (instrument texts) it's near impossible to weed those out, so they're left (along with their hash record) in order to stop people uploading them again and again.

The Lobby / Why our IRC channel is nearly always busy :)
« on: April 04, 2007, 16:35:52 »
I just felt like writing up something to poke your heads with, here's a theory...

The fact that we are having many discussions in our IRC channel, is strong evidence that supports my theory that: if an environment is preserved, managed and tended to, the occupants of that environment bond indirectly to the state of stability of that environment thus either consiously or subconsiously make the choice to spend their socializing time there. On the opposite side, an environment left to run wild with little or no moderation, tending or social involvement from the moderators nurtures very little social bonding with the rest of the occupants.

This is evident in channels that are large in number but low on social interaction, the occupants in those environments seek to establish social bonding by mere presence than interaction, these channels are often delerlict of topic and tend to encourage misbehaviour not only from newbies that randomly wander into the environment, but also regular idlers whom happen upon a chance of scarce activity and use it as an excuse to break silence for a short period. More often than not these short breaks stay short and the flow of social interaction reduces to background levels after a few hours or less.

My theory is that channel management, presence of operators and their interactions are important for the social being of the channel. Sometimes a channel operator can be seen to use force when discussions or individual occupants take a conversation or comment and take it off the rails. This is where balance is important, yet it's not a balance that can be seen or described, it's a feeling that in text-based communication relies on a lot of gut instinct. Obviously this sometimes goes wrong being that text-based comms is often open to misinterpretation, however in a social environment where many occupants witness and are exposed to the same material it is often a matter of watching the reactions of those occupants in context with the issue at hand from which a course of action is decided.

This leads me to the next point, that a set of clearly defined channel rules are important as a base to make sure that operators have a grounding, a platform from which to assist in those decisions. It, in my opinion, also says a lot about a social channel to the unexpeienced user. Reading a set of rules which explain what is and what is not acceptable behaviour should definitly have some influence on their decision to visit it or not.

Many channels I have visited have no clear set of boundaries, or justice system - there are many that believe everyone is entitled to do what they want, and without consequence. I whole heartedly disagree and oppose this stance, why? because if there are no boundaries (stating the obvious here) then whom is to tell whom what to do when a conflict occurs. In a real social environment the existance of a real justice system ensures that  the social interactions between people do not cross certain boundaries. In the virtual world I believe these boundaries, albeit tailored for online interaction are imperative to be held, respected and enforced not only by the moderators but also by the occupants of that environment whom partake in the social interactions there. It is their responsibility as much as it is the moderators to communicate with peers what is and isn't acceptable within the boundaries of the channel rules.

Well, there we go. I felt like writing a load of hogwash, so there it is... You can comment on it if you like...

The Lobby / Help keep the archive alive!
« on: February 22, 2007, 12:35:13 »
:breakpage:
It's a mystery - the login system is working, the member registrations are open, a couple of members have registered - but nearly nobody is posting comments on their favourite modules! What gives? You can browse to a song on the archive and fill in a comment and rating on the song of your choice!

It generally encourages you to mention what you like about it, or why you recommend it (or why you dont like it and why you don't recommend it).

All comments get featured on the front page (up to 10 at any one time), it's a nice touch if you feel a particular module should have a mention.

Need I remind you that multiple people can comment on the modules? :)

The idea eventually is to switch charting of the songs from being based on the "review score" (we have hardly any review crew to write dedicated and detailed reviews - which is what is required of the review section) and instead base the charts/scoring on the average scores of the comments - which are posted by you, the visitors.

All you need is an existing Modarchive account, be it an artist, reviewer or crew - if you don't have one you can register for a member account via the Register icon on the site.

So, please - give it a go. Make sure you read the comment posting rules, and let's see how it goes. :)

Tracking / Goodbye Altered Perception
« on: January 27, 2007, 19:54:17 »
:breakpage:
Altered Perception was a music site from long ago, which for some reason or other had to be shut down. At the time, the folks who ran The Mod Archive agreed to host the Altered Perception files under some seperatly generated (and static) webpages on The Mod Archive.

Up until now, the Altered Perception site remained seperate. However, you will find as of January 27th 2007 that the modules from Altered Perception have been merged with the general Mod Archive, and as a result, a few good things have come about:

* Faster downloads - now the modules have been moved to the new mirror server structure.
* Searchable - Instrument and comment texts, yay.
* Duplicates that were already in the archive have been removed.
* Only modules have been ported over. The WAV/EXE/MP3/TXT/NFO/etc... contents have been discarded.
* 1695 modules have been imported into The Mod Archive!
* The modules have retained their original datestamp.

For your convenience the "Altered Perception only" menu will be available for a short while, as generally now that the merge has happened the sub-site no longer actually exists :)

This conversion/import took approximatly 11 hours of actual maintenance labour.

Enjoy!

Tracking / The Compost Compo is Over - Results!
« on: July 12, 2006, 22:25:16 »
It's over!

Well done to all that participated, there was a HUGE turnout for an OHC - 17 entries, thank goodness too! Had there been any more, there would probably have been issues with people figuring out how to put their votes in order! Again, big thanks go out to the participants and also those people that helped spread the word. In total there were 31 people present, both spectators and participants.

(Main page viewers - Click the Topic link to read the full post and get the download links!)

Congratulations Ceekayed, and 2nd place for HyoChan by 1 point!

Voting took approximatly 1 and a half hours from release of the votepack, which isn't too bad.

A OHC may be "One Hour" for composing, but the proceedings take a lot longer when there are lots of entries. You have to commit for about 3 hours in total when they are this big :)

Here are the results!

Tracking / Compo Calendar
« on: July 05, 2006, 11:15:55 »
The Compo Calendar has been around for some time already, but now it has been expanded to bring together people who like to compo from various different IRC networks.

For more information, take a peek at this: http://www.modarchive.com/compost.png

The Calendar Interface for quick-browsing the calendar via the web is available at: http://compost.red-heat.com/

This calendar is designed for tracker compos only.

To get your compo listed, you can PM me (m0d) on the forums, or ask any operator in #modarchive on irc.esper.net, OR if you're going to regularly post compos you can get your own posting account setup on IRC, again, contact me. :)

If you want more information, you can request the help function via IRC by joining #compost on either Espernet, Efnet or IRCnet and issuing the !compohelp command in the channel.

Who's been uploading all of Heatbeat (of rebels) mods?

There are a few that are already on the archive under different names, those ones have been deleted from the Recent uploads for that reason.

I remember lots of these mods from my Amiga days
