News / Re: Scenesat has provided an extra vCPU
« on: December 22, 2023, 18:24:29 »
Am doing some benchmarks to improve performance, main page loading random lists has a large impact so bumping those randomized lists to links and increasing the sorted lists, have to wait a few days to see the outcome but can tell already pageload is down from 5s+ to 2s.

Bumping the Quick Picks off to a linked page instead as that is a randomized list as well.

News / Scenesat has provided an extra vCPU

Today I am very pleased to announce that Scenesat has allocated an extra virtual CPU to our system, thanks in part to the few donations Scenesat receives via Modarchive.

I will soon publish some notes under the Scenesat donation link indicating that we may be able to expand available resources for Modarchive  through donations.

In the past when TMA donation drives allowed me to rent high speed dedicated servers with many CPUs we had lots of spare processing power to allow for growth, unfortunately the donation drives ceased when I went on an emergency hiatus for several years to work on personal issues. The consequence of that was the donation pool eventually ran out of money and nobody picked up the gauntlet to keep it going!

Thank goodness for Scenesat, especially Ziphoid and Fnord who provisioned a virtual server, which is why we now direct our donation drive towards Scenesat.com- if you are not familiar with Scenesat, they provide high quality live video and audio streams from many demo-parties, where module competitions frequently take place. Additionally, Scenesat provides a lot of infra for hosting radio shows by sceners, and also broadcasts scene-only music 24/7,  including fantastic music modules.

Making a donation through the Modarchive donation button on the main page will tag your donation and put it towards keeping the services online as well as possibly enabling us to earn additional resources for operating Modarchive.

All the best wishes and strength for the new year,

m0d

I have requested an extra Virtual CPU, we used to have 8 real CPUs on the server I maintained and rented with donations, but on Scenesat they have kindly given a home, but at the moment 1 CPU is getting choked especially when the site gets the hug of death from various well meaning publications linking to us.

I am working towards also optimizing even more, the original website ran as I mentioned on a meaty hardware server in a colocated data center, the dream you could say.

We will make do but these errors are bound to happen occasionally due to the sheer increase in load these days on such minimal specs. If the donations to Scenesat keep coming in, hopefully increasing, we may be able to earn more CPUs.

I am hopeful our 2nd CPU will come on line soon.

Stay tuned as they say =)

Hi Looper,

I am relieved to say I think it is done. Can you go check and confirm?

Thank you! <3

A prompt for anyone who feels interested in writing about their relationship with the module format, its place in computer history and  if there are particular reasons you have kept to this mostly underground format and whether you have preferences for modules over alternative, not necessarily mainstream, but other widespread forms of music be it vinyl or a huge MP3 collection, if there are particular module artists that changed or influenced your life in some way.

Don't worry, I'm not doing market research   just seeing our boards fairly (and reasonably so) quiet. I'd like to get to know more about those that love the module format, no matter which website but of course if the modarchive is your home, its always good to know who is out there.

Wishing all the best, with strength for the next year,

Hi Looper has this issue resolved itself or do I need to do a deep dive to kick the process into action? If so can you provide me with the module id numbers for the affected tracks?

Cheers

Actually this is a bigger problem than I initially thought, so you won't need to do anything as I have to implement some routines to clear up scores left in other tables by now-missing comments, first thing I will be doing is running a complete re-scan of the other tables and unset the scores from the corresponding entry in the module's table entry.

News / Site plans update - fixes and more coming

Hello all, long time no see- an update regarding the modarchive problems that have been popping up lately.

We had a disk-full situation which resulted in a database corruption, caused by an oversight during the transfer of the website to the scenesat server some time ago, this will be remedied (I have my original notes from the original server I managed) so it hopefully won't happen again.

There are some database tables missing as a result of the crash, but I will be working to restore these with no effective loss of data, the main tables are safe. A big thank you to fnord of Scenesat for recovering what we could from the unaffected database files.

Regarding some changes to the artist system, regrettably one feature used to expedite artists associating their own orphaned modules to their profiles will need to be removed as it was abused by someone to do damage to the site where a bt was programmed to associated every module with their own profile. Instead the method for helping orphaned modules be associated with their accounts will be carried out as it used to be via the forums, providing staff with a list of module IDs and their own artist ID. We can then vet and minimize issues like this in the future.  It is a shame, but unfortunately we no longer live in the era 20 years ago where we could trust our users to behave,

Additional improvements will be coming to help optimize the speed of the website, as currently the server is using a technology which I had discarded long ago (apache2) in favor of a lighter httpd,  fine tuned for the specific needs of modarchive.  I believe I still have backups of my original configurations before the site was moved by 3rd party to scenesat hosting.

I have been making a list of additional tweaks including plans to instate a trust based credential, which means new accounts will not be able to make publicly visible comments or use the interactive features until some form of check has been made to ensure that there is no malicous intent. This still needs some though put to it but just letting you know that there may still be users that post spam. In light of this I will be expanding the crew tools to help clean up the mess in some areas that were previously forgotton about.

Regarding my health, ,I (m0d) am going through chemo which means every couple of weeks I will be absolutely wiped out and unable to even look at a screen for days, this week I was told I had to pause chemo for a week because I was too weak after losing 13 Kilos in only a couple of weeks! Not from the places I'd  like such as my old beer belly, but the muscles.

This pause will give me a window to perform this work and I would very much appreciate it if you would be quietly patient as some things may get accidentally borken while I am revisiting my very first code written a long time ago. :-)

Taking modarchive back on under my wing again is actually a blessing to help take my mind off the rest of the bad stuff going on around.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas, happy holidays and to a brighter future for your favorite module website.

All the best,
m0d, (Greg)

The Lobby / Re: So... the archive is dead?

:azn:Thanks Looper, one of the reasons I had to step back when I was going through strife in life all those years ago was to make sure that the continuity of the website continued even despite my absence. I created this iteration of the site so that it would be part of my joy and legacy to add to the demo scene history and to others lives as well.

I will admit I think my reaction here was probably a little bit harsh. I’m going to remove the bans on these fellows, because after all, they have likely misplaced passion about something but the way of balancing and equating the  two different things, which is someone just asking for a little extra time (not sympathy) was as many may agree- totally out of line

I have along with my wife, been making phone calls to ring in some favours from some old friends of mine of the scene, the custodianship is already set for many years with scenesat as you know, so long as ziphoid receives some donations from time to time to keep everything running, and I know he frequently has to use his money out of pocket.

However, mere hosting arrangements do not cover any hands on help with the website code itself,  as my condition improves through my treatment , I have planned out some essential changes that need to be done in order to secure the website against future malicious behaviour. I just wish looking at a computer screen didn’t make me feel so sick right now :-)

Speaking of the malicious attacks,

I don’t even know why the people who did this started doing it, it is drama that’s come from some chat room on the Internet or a feud with the previous custodian, that has occurred during my absence.

The dialogue that is currently opening between my contacts is for specifically brainstorming for a special long-term preservation, there is no intention to redevelop a new site, however, that is an option entirely up to someone else if they wish to do so, but their project must be original and self supporting and standing, just as mine was when I developed the first iteration after the previous custodian left- and their code folded under the sheer weight of the website growth.

Providing and supporting mod archive has been 20 years of mixed joy and misery. there are some strange people out there with some funny ideas, religious, nutcases, paranoid, schizophrenic behaviour, all sorts of strange abuse, unfortunately outnumbered the positive which is why it played quite a considerable effect on my mental health way back when I had to throw in the towel.

IRC

To say, I felt a great loss when I had to remove myself from the social environment around The Mod Archive community, and the tracking scene in general, I had lost so many close friends and acquaintances that only lived on IRC. I have not returned nor plan to for the sake of my sanity :-) (plus things have changed drastically with so many different services appearing now and fragmenting the entire ecosystem. Oh well :-))

For those that remember me before I slipped downhill, I have grown considerably since and hope that the respect I once earned from you can make its way back. I really do miss you (the tracking scene circle) dearly, and I do wish that things that the steps I had to take for self preservation did not have such personal disastrous consequences, but the situation called it (standing up to the bullying).

Health

I am unable to use my screen for more than about 15 minutes at a time due to the nausea and extreme physical and mental fatigue that is the side effect part of the intense chemo-therapy treatment.

This and this alone is the only reason I need time, not because I’m running out of life, although I was hoping on at least another 40 years, I am only going to have two which is devastating to my soul mate and wife of 25 years, as for my family itself- I don’t really have one anymore.

For the record,

The previous custodian of the mod archive also felt considerably ill, and no one was there to do anything to help keep the website going so he could take leave and take care of himself.  Mikael only handed me the reins when he was absolutely sure that I was trustworthy, and together with Robert Watson, the original founder, established sufficient trust for me to begin my experiments in parallel resulting in the eventual conversion to the database driven system you see today.

In addition, I took not one single line of code of theirs, I picked up two books from which I built my very first creations, wish included lots of bash script to do conversion of some of the data from the very original predecessor, this still exists on my systems preserved for posterity. It’s crazy how things came around from such humble beginnings to a considerably complex system designed to render extremely quick on very slow hardware.

Some of you eagle-eyed observers may have seen earlier iterations of the website, featured in the pro audio Sound On Sound and Computer Music magazine, as I learned my way through the maze of programming SQL.

The Mod Archive was and always has been my only coding project, so it may come as a surprise that, including the graphic work, everything is handmade on vi on a pretty slow Solaris SPARC system.

As I mentioned before, the entire system was designed to run on a very limited system because back then co-location of a server was very expensive, and we borrowed resources  from the original founders startup (Safeport) until we could afford to rent our own dedicated server. This is what the donation drives I pursued enabled for quite a few years until the time came for me to step back for my personal health reasons.

Perhaps ironically, now, due to the massive differences in the libraries used on the current Scenesat servers, the original code has to run through some strange pipeline converters and shims which adds considerable performance delays, meaning the site is performing a little bit just like my original development system :-) :-)

Speaking of which, it would take a full-time developer about €18,000 worth of work to do a decent job to bringing the current code to run with modern libraries, as well as a necessary  external re-audit for security which has always been part of the testing and deployment of code. Of each of the 5 years, that is roughly how much man-hour-wise I put into developing Modarchive.org without any compensation for it.

I will keep you all up-to-date when I can, I will be looking into who still has access to the administration system and what levels they have access to so that I can work out policy with the future long-term custodian of the site and how to proceed with the spreading of various responsibilities across a number of carefully considered volunteers who have been vetted and trusted by long standing peers in the demo scene resource hosting space.

As I mentioned earlier, I only need _time_ during my _treatment_,

The pain and suffering that this is causing should eventually be reduced enough, perhaps to the point where we can rejoin and rebuild friendships while listening to modules again without the terrible overbearing, dehumanising rhetoric from some members of the community, as I meant to imply while discussing those who I temporarily banned, I believe in second chances.

With love and a hope for a bright future for everyone,

m0d

You guys are impatient Seeing this thread and considering the news I posted lack of empathy is inhuman.
This screams like you just want sympathy instead.
It's called hoping for the best but preparing for the worst, and in the case of you and your work, it is an effort to preserve an archive that we have no control over what happens. Might as well prepare in the way we can rather than risk decades worth of archives vanish. Not caring about that is inhuman.
You guys are impatient Seeing this thread and considering the news I posted lack of empathy is inhuman.
Putting yourself above over 200 thousand songs, individual creative works of art, is also inhuman. But OK, if you say so. We're trying to preserve your hard and long work on this site and you're saying that? Fine. But we don't really know how much time is left. The songs will be gone with no trace and what to do then?

I cannot believe what I am reading, there will always be a continuation of this website, so you do not need to worry about that. I am flabbergasted and terrified. There are humans that think this way about others. You are no longer welcome on these boards. As a result. I’m sorry, but  your behaviour is totally and utterly unacceptable in any civilised society. I can only hope you are trolling.
