MilkyTracker Community / Re: Help with hand drawn samples
« on: January 29, 2016, 10:08:16 »
My belief is that you will need to involve some maths if you want to easily get more elaborate "timbres" out from simple waveforms. The reason for this is that you would want to include some SENSIBLE overtones, for example fifths.

I would use the handdrawing approach by first handdrawing the base "timbre", and then mix pasting that sample at a natural ratio with lower volume. This can be done in Milkytracker by mix-pasting differently sized samples. Check results and modify. Become familiar with the results of this technique.

Personally, I haven't used this technique a lot since I'm used to just handddraw, but I really should get more into it. Adding a tad of fifth is never bad.. :)

Another thing to add to your repertoir is simple zero-padding or PWM-like drawing.

MilkyTracker Support / Vibrato rate made sense
« on: October 26, 2010, 18:38:59 »
I have some general questions about the instrument vibrato in XM.

A) How does the vibrato rate relate to tick speed (or whatever)? I want to create vibratos that sync with the actual BPM. Is it as simple as using 4, 8, f et c as vibrato speed?

B) This is rather a mixing question that relates to this: When making chiptunes, is this also a guideline on how to avoid dreadful interference effects when using a delay with the same vibrato?

MilkyTracker Feature Requests / Re: A new feature idea
« on: May 19, 2010, 14:32:04 »
Feature is, in 2 words: multichannel output for Jack Audio Server in
Linux (and Mac)

I'm not a coder but I fully endorse this :) This would make it possible to route the audio to any DAW for mixing (not to mention the use of delays, which i would find valuable). As far as I know rewire is only being licenced to commercial products.

I use virtual audio cable under windows at the moment, routing only the master audio to renoise for some extra mastering and visualization.

Some would probably think that it's better to change software alltogether, but except for being used to its tracking interface, Milkytrackers vibsweep and sample drawing is invaluable to me and I can't find these features anywhere else.

MilkyTracker Feature Requests / Re: Grid in the Sample Editor.
« on: April 11, 2010, 14:49:12 »
Nearly all of the samples i use are hand-drawn. I don't feel that i would benefit that much from a grid, even though it would be a nice feature.

Keyboard control for moving envelope points would be awesome though. But yeah it would be nice being able to arrow-move the latest drawn point in the sample editor as well.

MilkyTracker Feature Requests / Time tracking
« on: December 29, 2009, 16:10:18 »
I would like to have some stats on how long i have been working on a track. How many minutes have i been tracking on it effectively? For how long time have I been playing it?

If there is a problem saving this kind of data somewhere, at least it would be cool to have it for the current session (instance of milkytracker). The timer could pause after 5 seconds of inactivity, and data entering could be separated from playing. This is a good way to get feedback on your own workflow.

MilkyTracker News / Re: MilkyTracker 0.90.85 Release Candidate
« on: December 29, 2009, 16:02:18 »
Great. I'm using it under Windows XP. It no longer hangs when exiting (audio driver issue?) which is great.

Shift-U for unmute does not work as the changelog states.

MilkyTracker Feature Requests / Macros for fast tracking - draft
« on: December 21, 2009, 13:25:32 »
Anyone having tracked for a while knows that there is a lot of tedious and repetetive work going on when handling delay channels, doubling and remapping instruments.

A macro system would cut a lot of time when tracking, and it would quickly make milkytracker the cutting edge xm tracker :)

The user would have the ability of assigning macros to controlkey+F1-F12, and the macros would be pasted into the channels just the same way as you paste a copied track to another track with shift-F4/F5.

How would the macro syntax look?

The macros for F1 to F12 would be set up in preferences. A macro could look like this:

= offset(4,remapinstrument(6,7,prevtrack()))

This macro would create a delay of the channel next left, offsetting the channel 4 lines, remapping instrument 6 to 7.

So far, I can think of the following functions being usable:

offset() - offsetting the track (delay)
remapinstrument(x,y,data) - remapping instrument x to y in the data
volumescale(x1, [x2], [override], data) - scaling the volume by pasting volume effect commands on every instrument. x2 being optional, making a linear scale from start of track to end. override being optional making the volume effect have priority if another effect is already in the effect column or volcolumn.
effecttrigger(effect, data) - example: effecttricker(E21, track(2)). Every note in the data input would get the effect E21 (finetune down) on its row.
metaeffect(patternnumber, startrow, endrow, data) - similar to effecttrigger, but pastes a block that is fetched from the effect column in patternnumbers startrow to endrow after every new note.

Various other special macro functions could be implemented, like making an offset on a tick level.

basic data returners:

track(tracknumber) - track(5) returns track 5.
prevtrack() - or rather this could be replaced by track(-1)
nexttrack() - or rather this could be replaced by track(+1)
requester(text) - pops up a requester returning the data being entered

Would anyone else like something like this or have any more suggestions? I hope it doesn't sound like a too complicated system to understand, i tried to be a bit thorough.

MilkyTracker Feature Requests / Envelope points, keyboard
« on: December 21, 2009, 12:53:56 »
I would like to be able to move the envelope points (vol and pan) step by step using the keyboard. This would be done by marking the point, holding a controlkey and then using arrows.

If the bitresolution in y axis is too high for this function to be sane, there could be a second controlkey making it fastmove ten steps.

This would be really helpful to me, as making advanced envelopes, trial&error with the mouse isn't very nice compared to granular keyboard control.

MilkyTracker Feature Requests / Shortcut for unmute all and solo
« on: August 27, 2009, 11:57:03 »
As far as I know there exists two muting shortcuts: Shift-M for muting the current channel, Ctrl-Shift-M for invert muting.

I suggest a shortcut for the action of unmuting all channels (for example shift-u).

There could also be a shortcut for soloing a channel (for example Shift-S, or Shift-J would place three muting shortcuts next to each other). Soloing a channel would otherwise be accomplished by (shift-u), shift-m, ctrl-shift-m which is OK but a bit tedious.

I have noticed "unmute all" and "solo" already exist in the context menu of the track header, but I haven't found any shortcuts for them.

Tracking / .IT with sample drawing
« on: June 03, 2009, 00:11:11 »
I am currently using milkytracker for editing and mixing chiptunes. However, i would like to start using the .IT format, mainly because it has NNA (and some other features such as channel panning). The problem is no .IT able tracker i have tried has a sample editor with sample drawing abilities. This makes tweaking the mix very difficult, unless you settle for using standard chip samples or zapping other tracks. I am still stuck with the .xm format because i consider sample drawing essential.

Does anyone know some way to resolve this dilemma? Nagging the openmpt coding team?
