About licensing...
« on: September 13, 2013, 21:44:57 »

I see that the modules each have their own license, and I want to ask... if I wanted to use a module for something, should it be one with the Public Domain license or what? I'm confused. I ask because I am doing a brief at college right now where a piece of music has to be included in it and instead of using the cheesy pieces of music there is on the college's student drive, I would like to pinch one from here, as long as it's copyright-free.

Thanks :)

If something uses a CC-license and you can agree with the terms associated with this very CC license (e.g. only for non-commercial use, no remixes, etc.), then you of course also use modules which use that license. This doesn't mean that these files are copyright-free, it just means that you don't have to pay any royalties.

So, I can use a module that is non-commercial then? And also, can you explain the Attribution and Public Domain licenses? I know that "No Derivatives" means don't copy that floppy don't make a copy of the module and "Share Alike" means you can make something based on it.

Just click on the license names to get an explanation, e.g. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/ - all parts of the license are explained there. So no, "no derivatives" doesn't mean that you may not make copies of the module (that would make absolutely no sense in a permissive license like the CC licenses), it just means that another musician may not remix this song.
