Xm To Xrns ?
« on: November 29, 2008, 14:08:08 »

Hi,

I would like to know if a tool exists allowing to converting .XM format to .XRNS (Renoise 2). In fact, I wish using my old XM musics keeping effects XM and improving its on Renoise 2 :-)
Why ? Because I composed very good musics with FastTracker II but the sound quality isn't here. I know with Renoise 2, I can fix & improve sound quality !

If no one tool "XM to XNRS" exists today, is there a coder for making this converter tool please ?

Thank you & Greetings,

renoise can import .it files, so i'm pretty sure it can also import .xm...?!
and if not: convert it with modplug :)

Hi Jojo,

Yes, Renoise can import .XM format but it doesn't play correctly this format because the effects FT2 aren't used in Renoise.

No, Modplug can't save .XM modules to .XRNS because ModPlug Tracker can't import/export .XRNS format.

i know that modplug can't handle xrns (you're talking to a mpt-developer, alright :)), but modplug can convert XM to IT which *may* work better in renoise. don't know about that. but it sounded rather okay the last time i checked.

The XM import in Renoise exists for just the purpose you're after. The reason why the playback isn't accurate is because making it compatible would restrict Renoise itself. The point is that if you have a good legacy module, you can continue working on it in Renoise if you make the manual effort of tweaking effects and such to re-create the original sound. At least you don't have to start from scratch.

Another way would be to export sections of your XM from FT2 in WAV and load the samples in Renoise. Sure the XRNS file would end up being huge, but the format is not as portable as XM anyway, what with the possible VST usage and the current lack of external player software.

Maybe even using both methods could prove to be the winning combination.
