Well, it didn't sound so bad on those crappy speakers with zero panning...
Which is probably why you hear more often in tracked works - it used to be much cheaper to get into tracking, so you could do it with the crappiest speakers ever. These days you can also easily start into the sequencer world with a zero budget thanks to free DAWs and plugins, the latter often already taking care of the panning for you.
