____________________________________________________________________ | | | Saga Musix presents: Phase One (2:28) | |____________________________________________________________________| This tune won the 2nd prize in the tiny music compo at the Evoke 2009 demoparty held in Cologne, Germany. I want to elaborate a bit on the history of this tune: A few days before Evoke 2009, I was still searching for a good track that I could use for the tiny music compo. The tiny music compo's rules say that the module has to be 64kb max after zipping. If you know my tunes, you probably also know that I tend not to limit myself to small modules. :> So was there no tune that I could use? I searched through my unfinished mod collection and found Phase One, a ~1 MB IT that was intended to be used in a Gravity demo in 2008. Since nothing better was there, my goal was now to make a 64kb version of this huge module in 3 days! I told myself: "nothing is impossible", so I began crunching down the samples using the usual methods - downsampling, converting to 8 bit, shortening, etc. However, this was still not enough. The module was still about 200kb uncompressed, and that would not get down to 64kb when zipped. So I began optimizing the patterns, using pattern loops where possible and re-using parts of patterns where possible. That was still not enough. Luckily, I remembered that the old ModPlug Player had a feature that I already wanted to remove from the OpenMPT sourcecode but now was the best opportunity to try it out for the first time: ADPCM compressed samples! After compression, the samples sounded worse, but I got down to 75kb zipped. That was just great. Now I could go on optimizing the patterns (thanks to Storlek for all the hints on compression) and I also optimized the instrument note maps, rearranged the sample list to get rid of empty sample slots, etc... In the end, I was way below the 64kb limit, so I had a lot of space again for writing the comment text, using a proper filename inside the zip file... And then I tried to reach exactly 65536 Bytes and that even worked quite well, after I found out what I have to modify in order to get or lose a few bytes. :) You are obviously listening to the uncompressed version now. It still has all the pattern optimization and the sliced loop so it is smaller than my original draft, but the samples are at original resolution and quality. Wow, what a long rant! But well, that's the basic history of this tune. I am quite satisfied with the result and the outcome of the compo. I definitely did not deserve to win, as cTrix's tune was so much more awesome than mine. :) Granted, this is not one of my best tunes, it is rather short but I don't think it is too bad. It's minimal! :P BTW: You can still find the 64kb version here: ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/parties/2009/evoke09/tinymusic/ ___ _/__/ _/__ / / ave / un! //Saga ____________________________________________________________________ | | | Greetings | |____________________________________________________________________| greetings go to the awesome people I've met at Evoke 2009: Alpha_C, Anderer, Beetle, cTrix (!), Dipswitch, Graga, Haohmaru, jix & laeila, jco, kami68k, kb, ko0x, las, maali, malodix, m0d, mog, Navis, Netpoet, Palindrome, SilverLance, styx, thec, Topy44, T$, urs, wzl, Zyps and the others who I've forgot (sorry!) more greetings: Bacter, Babyneko, coda, De_Gopher, Gargaj, jantore, Keops, Knoeki, LPChip, psishock, Relabs, SaphirJD, Sphenx, Storlek, Waxhead, Yozfitz, Xaimus, etc... ____________________________________________________________________ | | | Track information and replay advice | |____________________________________________________________________| Track information: - Originally tracked around 24.05.2008 to 26.07.2008 - 64k edit made at end of July 2009 - Compo release: Tiny Music Compo _ Evoke 2009, won 2nd place. - Please play this module in OpenMPT, ModPlug Tracker or XMPlay.
