Composed by K. Jose March 6, 2025 2 arrangements of the track based on 16-bit console specs. Pos 0 hex 0 - Sega Genesis Pos 19 hex 13 - Super Nintendo Entertainment System (sampled from Sega Genesis patches) This one had been stuck in my drafts for a very long time because I had trouble coming up with a title, came up with the title now because this track felt quite winter-y but not Christmassy (even though I'm in a tropical area that never receives snow) All FM instrument samples were sampled from my own YM2612 FM patches using the GENNY VST plugin and OpenMPT's Render to Sample function. Square tone sample prepared by myself by drawing its waveform in OpenMPT. Noise shaker was pseudorandom noise with its volume manipulated in a temporary pattern that was then rendered to a sample. Triangle sample is from Versilian Community Sample Library. Downconverted with interpolation to mono 15700Hz 8-bit, then resampled without interpolation to 52000Hz to approximate the PCM capabilities and other properties of the YM2612, then resampled with interpolation to just 44100Hz for file size for the Genesis one, and 32000Hz for SNES. SNES samples were separately sampled from the original Genesis patches, and were processed through the C700 VST and then resampled for additional authenticity. PSG tones were baked in together with the FM tone for the SNES versions of the Lead and Bell samples. This time around I did further fiddling around with the volumes on the PSG channels, approximating actual volume levels on the SN76489. The track was initially made with linear volumes at increments of 4 and a maximum volume of 60 on the PSG channels. Volumes were readjusted to the nearest approximated actual volume level on the chip. A low pass filter cutoff was applied to all tracker instruments on this track to more closely approximate how it would sound like on an actual model 1 Genesis. Made use of channel volume commands to mute channels when patterns are reused for the less busy parts of the track. Recommended playback settings (OpenMPT and modern module players): Linear interpolation, 295 nanoseconds volume ramping if available or when trying to load into original Impulse Tracker with a Sound Blaster card: interpolated, 75% filter (to make up for the filtering) Snuck in a Genesis soundchip VGM version of this track (made in Furnace from scratch but strictly based on this version) as sample 17, and an SNES SPC version (converted from IT with the samples before C700 processing) as sample 18. Take out these samples, export as RAW, rename accordingly (.vgm, .spc), and load into a VGM player in emulation or a real Genesis, or an SPC player in emulation or a real SNES, respectively. If you have issues loading it, try changing the sign (signed/unsigned conversion).
