Art is all about context. You may find these tracks by Massa KR weird. And how can anyone ever give it a 10/10? But to me these tracks were hugely influential. So much so that today's Louigi Verona is unthinkable without these several mod files made by Massa KR. I loved the lo-fi feeling about them, the boldness, the humor and the fact that in our computer age people who do truly weird shit can actually publish it. A lot of my interest towards weird electronic music came from these several tracks by the guy. His old 1999 website is archived on my own, as an homage. |

This is one of those tunes you can only discover through the randomizer. And something just caught my attention here: the incessant voice samples against a somewhat grotesque soundscape, the funny musical phrase that keeps repeating, the beat that enters the picture in the second part: this is just a work of art! And art, allegedly, is very subjective. And I happen to like this painting. At the very least, this will introduce you to "Brainstorm", a precursor of the Black Mirror :) |

This is an example of why I love the randomizer. I might be the only person in the world who listened to this tune 10 time on a loop. It's silly - and yet, it has style. A really cool underground feel to the thing and just a fun experience. Added to my "weird shit" folder. |

I wonder where the samples are from, but this is brilliant. Simple, gentle and the way it's tracked is both simple and skillful. I especially like the usage of the organ. That you could create this with such limited samples is awesome! |

When I decided to rate this highly, I was wondering if I would be the only one. I was glad to discover that two more people as of the moment of writing have added this tune to their favorites. You know when you hear something and you realize it's a brilliant piece of music, but one that most people won't take seriously? Well, this is it. And I have to say that the title is awesomely accurate. The lead that starts at pattern 15 is as ridiculous and completely appropriate. I am so glad that the random number generator led me to this. If I even make a movie about days in a desert, this will be the soundtrack. |

Although simplistic in its execution, Intimate Slumber is a tune that has always connected with me. It manages to be simple and formulaic, yet somehow still non-trivial. One of those tunes that you can make a cover of and get wonderful results - because the source material is so melodically strong. |

Michal's signature melodies. Sounds more like a soundtrack piece than a standalone composition and one that would benefit from a more proper mix. Michal's attempts at emulating reverb with long volume envelope tails muddy the waters quite a bit here, especially when the strings are allowed to play on their own. The theme is lovely. But I could see this piece being much more. I definitely hope that Michal continues writing music, since I would be very curious to find an unpublished catalogue of his music made with a modern DAW. |

A funky energetic tune with stellar sample quality. And one that you would never guess is done as a 4 channel mod. The only thing that actually doesn't work for me here is the panning. I tried fixing it myself, but none of the options I tried truly worked, which probably means that Virgill simply ran into the limitation of the format and there is nothing you could do. |

Posted Tue 4th May 2021
Rated 2 / 10 |
The difficulty with remaking Silius is that it is a very good chiptune soundtrack to begin with. Therefore, adding something to new to it is very difficult, while any mistake will be really jarring. If you would've remade it in a different genre, then yes, it would make sense. But this? I would specifically single out two problems: 1. The backing "guitar" instrument is very poorly chosen. For one, it's overly loud and makes the bass virtually inaudible. In the original it is a soft sound which plays completely in the background. This removes any sense of a groove. Also, the sound has a very poorly sounding volume envelope tail which is just painful to listen to. 2. The lead has too many slides, which are completely uncalled for. The original has a couple of them, which make sense, because they connect notes between the end and the beginning of the melody. In your case it's just showing off your ability to do it. Very distracting. All in all, this shows what you say in the description - very little work put into this. |

Actually really liking this. A lot is achieved with just 7 samples and a great use of sample offset in this one to deliver a really cool sequence. The sample in question, sample 5 in the mod, doesn't sound like a lot, but is expertly utilized by roz. And this 4 channel mod sounds like any trance composition you would hear in the 90s on those amazing compilations. |

An excellent piece, although I am not reviewing it, because there's almost nothing to review: the piece is constructed of samples. If muffler made the samples himself, excellent. But for this tune the tracker was simply used as a way to sequence everything. Some volume slides and panning, but other than that technically nothing remarkable: the whole tune really rests on the excellent samples. |

I like the vibe and the overall energy of the mix, but something is definitely wrong: some bass notes don't match the chords and play out of tune. I would also add some sort of sonic variations to the guitar/piano sounds, maybe offset variations, otherwise they a bit robotic. A bit of movement is what is required here, I think. |

Actually a very nice tune. It's chill and low key, but has it's charm. The chiptune bit manages to create a very thoughtful atmosphere, to the point that I think the tune might have been positioned as a more chill piece, with maybe a different percussion style. |

This is a beautiful composition, which approaches a single sample situation from a strictly melodic point of view and instead of using tricks to make something out of it, presents us with a very contained and meaningful musical piece. I am not competent enough to judge the tune from a music theory perspective, but to give several general stokes: the piece is variable and is not stuck in a loop, instead we have an intro and a great build up into a dynamic, fast paced part. Cooth's use of volume and tempo changes strictly serve melodic purposes, and he is able to weave an enchanting texture with just several notes. I also like the fact that the tune is not predictable and is always more original than your expectations. Excellent work from an unconventional composer. I would be interested to see if more could be done with the premise if other instruments are added and a decision to further develop the theme is taken. |

Struggled between chiptune and demostyle. Kind of a chiptune in demostyle. Very enjoyable. A dynamic and mature composition, from a master of tracking. In a couple of places there is very audible dissonance. I can only assume that this was the composer's intent, but found it to be strange. And, of course, the tune's title is not Forward Backbards, but actually "Forward Backwards II". |

When I am going to ride off into the sunset on my old camel, this is exactly what I am going to whistle to myself. At the end of the day a chiptune is simply a piece of music performed using simple 8 bit waves. "My dirty old kamel" is not only a chiptune classic, it's just a great melody worthy of remixes, covers and live performances. |

Excellent, excellent ambient. Whoever says otherwise is simply not the target audience. Awesome 8 channel mod with an absolutely skillful development that grabs you and doesn't let go till the end. Immersive experience and an impressive display of skill given the limited capabilities of the mod format. The only reason this is not a 10/10 is because I felt some transitions could use improvement, as well as the ending: patterns 11 and 12 are decidedly weird. The ending could have been a pad similar to the one in pattern 8, which would make the tune loopable. Having said that, again - lovely, lovely experience. Downloaded and will definitely be playing it again and again in the future! p.s.: I modified the tune on my machine by removing patterns 11 and 12, so that I can listen to this loopable version. |

If you were ever under the impression that the ratman is dead, this tune promptly corrects your flawed perceptions: the ratman is very much alive and kicking. But not too energetically: the tune has this interesting chill feel while using distorted leads and hard drums. One of those mod files which sounds more like midi: very little tracking technique demonstrated here. Melodically it is as unremarkable as ratman's enemies: just like they weren't able to live a dent on him, this tune will leave you indifferent. But if someone asks you: what about ratman? Just tell them: ratman is alive! |

A pretty standard hard trance tune, very old school in its approach. Good production quality, 3 distinct parts to the tune, the final bit is really nice. Could have been really enjoyable in 1993 when this kind of thing was new. Today, however, it will probably be perceived as unremarkable. |

Good attempt. I would make these suggestions: 1. Try not to take the samples at face values. ProTracker gives you many ways to make the sound more interesting, versatile. Tone portamento, vibrato, volume slides. Use them! 2. When writing melodies, try to make sure every note is necessary. It's good if the melodies don't sound random and the listener can recognize a theme. |

I find it fair to rate tunes which I like very high, even if my analytical brain says that the tune is nothing special. In this case I think a rating 6/10 would be fair, but I am rating it much higher, because this is objectively the effect that this tune has on me personally. So, why not rate it from this POV? This is a classic 4 track chiptune, played at the standard 125/6 bpm/ticks. The samples are standard, the melody is dead simple, not too many tricks, but boy does this simplicity work! Somehow for me this is one of the tunes that I keep going back to. When my modalgia kicks back in, this little wonder ends up on my playlist every time! Thank you, some1 |

This is one of those times where you generally enjoy the overall setting, but the tune becomes more about what it could have been. The whole composition seems to be a setup for patterns 8 and 14. And then the tune goes back into being about nothing. And don't get me wrong, I appreciate house music without melodies, but good non-melodic house music is much more than just a drum loop and a Rhodes piano backdrop. So, this is a clean tune that sounds like a quick sketch that was never finished, but I feel it just doesn't work as a standalone piece of music. |

I remember listening to it and thinking - wow, what an awesome original melody!
Of course, us young beginner producers primarily wanted the track for samples. But the melody stayed with me throughout the years. When I think of my first steps as a music producer/composer, this tune is up there as being my introduction to tracking. Some days ago I dreamt that I was searching for this mod online.
I remembered that there was something about the torch and was able to find it here. And the track did not disappoint - it's a very nicely made ballad. Thank you, Leinad!
