I got accustomed with MODs in the late 80s, early 90s, it was MS-DOS of course; I fell in love with what the tech allowed considering HDDs were far below 80MB in size at the time and MP3 wasn't even a thing: consumer CPUs struggled to play it.

In the recent past the crack scene loved them as well and reused them a lot. Not sure if the scene is alive now that most applications require online activation which complicates the process.
