Title: Unity (drum & bass)

The first thing that caught my attention was that the bass samples dominated the piece quite a bit (in otherwords, they were a bit loud compared to the rest of the piece). I really liked the ambient chords. To me, they were the best thing about the piece. The flute that entered around 1:45 could have been used more (maybe a better melody). Although the piece falls nicely into the category of drum and bass, it just didn't have the feel of a professional drum & bass track. The drum samples were a bit noisy (especially the drums that opened the piece). On the other hand, the ambient chords and the sound clips were very nicely done. The song would have been more pleasing to listen to had the composer equalized the bass and cleaned the drum samples up a bit.

Leviathan is a wonderful composer. Of the two songs I have reviewed (Tranquility and Wanderlust), I have enjoyed both of them. They have both been straight soft rock, and have been done beautifully. My main complaint with this song is that it starts out too abruptly. The saxaphone melody is quite nice, however. One other thing that caught me off guard, and that I haven't figured out whether I like or dislike, is the drum section at 1:25. The way the samples are split between the left and right channel is a bit disturbing, but provides a nice break. Leviathan's skills certainly seem to be adapted to soft rock, for he does it so well. The melodies are well put together and sound pleasing to the ear. The chord progression of this piece was a bit ordinary, but it worked well. The transition between sections (for instance at 0:40) are nicely done, especially the modulation (which other, cutting-edge genres of music commonly lack).

Wanderlust is a wonderful song. The beginning guitar samples are wonderfully used, the drum track accentuates the music wonderfully, and the melody throughout the song is really good as well (especially from 1:13 to 1:40). The only thing holding this song back from excellence is that it really does not provide a feeling of amazement. It is very well done, but there are no drop-dead amazing sections. I wouldn't be surprised to hear this song on a soft-rock station sometime, however. The first thing that caught my attention were the quality of the samples. The drum kit blended nicely with everything, adding to the piece. The melody samples were clean and were well worked to make a nice melody. I have always admired composers who take the time to add a "swing" element to their music, because it is more time consuming than a straight beat in a tracker.

I am not a big fan of Tangerine Dream, but I did hear a lot of their influence in this song. The song had a nice blend, between the background bleeps (nicely done) and the main melody. The beginning caught my attention quickly, with that feedback- style sound. Even though this piece does not sound very complex, it is quite pleasing to the ear and well done indeed. To me, this sounds most like Kraftwerk or Komputer I thouroughly enjoyed the chord progression that was used throught this piece. The samples were nicely done, and they were nicely used throughout the piece. The use of the sounds made it almost sound like a flange was occuring, something that is very difficult to achieve in a module tracker. In fact, the song was very professional-sounding, like something you might find on a commercial CD.
