A thumping track done in the good old classic Amiga style. Lots of nice work with the snares accent a well defined house beat, with unobtrusive hihats. The melody is good, although not particularly memorable, with instruments that work very well together. The bassline and pads go very well together, and the loud raw bass (which is often a little too loud) softens nicely in the breakdowns. The synths that make up the higher frequencies are done very well, with good use of volume during the breakdowns, making them sound distant in a way that really lifts the track up. Four channels, mono, no volume/panning envelopes. this track is clearly a conversion of a MOD to an XM, probably to prevent nasty stereo seperation effects players like to do these days. The samples are standard amiga-era issue, and mixed very well. The artist has chosen bass samples that work well with his beat. The four channels are used well, and the track doesnt ever sound flat despite the limit on channels. All in all this is a professional quality track that could easily accompany an amiga demo or game in the early 90's.

The music here is nothing to shout about at all, it's an very short, simple track done in a slow relaxed house/pop style. The piano is terribly out of tune, and the melody is kind of uninspired, in fact musically this track really is verging on the pits, and I would have given it a lower rating if it weren't for the technical point explained below. This track is called The Lonely Sample because it only contains one sample, mapped to 1 instrument. The artist has used 9xx (sample offset) and Exx (note cut) XM effects to start and stop playback of this one sample the way he requires to make the track. This is clever but pointless, and it's excusable that some notes are out of tune because he can't tune them independently of oneanother. This track is something of a novelty item that gains respect not because of the music, but because of it's different approach.

What?! Only 64K? So I listened to it, and it was good. Thumb-boy's squeezed all he can out of so little space to produce a great techno track with all the things you would expect from commercial music but never get in mods. Example: the rapid speed increase of the rhythm until it becomes just a buzz. There's probably a technical word for that that I don't know. This is a great track, and as it's so small, you can listen to it right now! Now I hate to give this a novice but it must be said that the samples aren't all that great and there's hardly any messing around with the stereo, and messing with the stereo always happens in the best techno tracks. There aren't many other effects used in it either, which is why I've been so stingey. Sorry.

I could tell by the title that this was going to be one of those mods. Grrr, this kind of music annoys me beyond belief; there's a damn voice sample that's used over and over again that is nothing less than a pain in the ass, and it interupts some decent techno music in the background. I'd get rid of that sample all together, or at least fade it down. Anyway, the music does what it was obviously intended to do, and that's drive the listener NUTS. The samples are high quality, and there's a lot of tempo-play. Unfortunately, it's a techno track, but the beat can't be measured on the richter scale. Better luck next time.

Yeah, I liked this one! It's great for background music. All the samples are the right volume, and all sound right for the music style. This guys taken a lot of time over the beat, and it sound good compared to the repetative beats you see frequently in mods. All the samples are of the best quality, and the stereo's been aranged for those of us who have stereo soundcards (yes, most of us. So how come so many artists forget us?!) All the volumes have been sorted, everythings in tune and there are some nice tempo changes as well.

This mod's very repetative, and that's why I've marked it down. I kept waiting for a big sound explosion, but there was none. I was quite disappointed. It's also too quiet. It's really just a background hum... Somebody needs to tell me why they need 16 channels when a maximum of four or five instruments are playing. The quality of the samples is decent but it sounds like the thing's only two patterns long...

A lot of thought went into this one. A slight downside is how repetative it is, and a few instruments sound very slightly out-of place. On the other hand I especially like the chants in the background and the ambient strings. A great little XM. It's not great technically, being mainly tweaking the stereo, but I don't think there's much scope for special effects in this particular XM. The way the stereo has been devided out between both channels makes the mod sound really professional.
