artist Composed in December 1996.

Now this is more like it. About a week after completing the absolutely awful Jade ~ 2:30 ~ I somewhat redeemed myself with this one. Unlike my other decent songs as a member of Quasar, this one was much more rock-style than demoscene-style.

Sometime in the summer or fall of 1996 I downloaded a song by Subliminal (the most talented and well-known of trackers in my hometown) called Sorrow's Night -Sb\Martyr. I liked it, and I was intrigued by the comments indicating that it was part of a series of songs predominantly done by Catspaw. I eventually looked for (and downloaded) Sorrow’s Avatar, and maybe 1 or 2 others. Incidentally, Subliminal mentioned in his song that he had to put it in S3M format so the “local lamers” could listen to it, but preferred IT format. I wonder if I was one of those local lamers he was referring to? Also, it’s possible that that comment led to me switching over to IT (not certain, though).

By the end of 1996, I decided that I wanted to make my own unauthorized addition to the series. So I gave it a shot and named it Sorrow’s Undoing. To add my own twist to it, I threw in the Washburn guitar sample set that I liked and used at the time, and a square wave to serve as a lead. The sample set ended up being similar to Pacific Lights. This time, however, I did not rely on a beat loop, and tracked out the percussion with individual samples.

The tune is not much different from Sorrow’s Night, except it’s in a different key and a bit slower tempo (in retrospect, I think the song would have been improved by a faster tempo and a few semitones higher for the key). It also doesn’t get as loud (Subliminal was known for having more of a metal sound to his songs, and that generally wasn’t my style). Overall this song holds up rather well, though because it’s not really original material I’m not quite as fond of it as other songs of the same era.

Catspaw would later follow-up with another song called Sorrow’s Triumph, which was a ten minute epic, and did not have the same rock melody. It was done with Dude and Dream Scythe. Like the others, it’s not on the Mod Archive, but it and Sorrow’s Avatar are, as of 2021, still available on the Hornet Archive.

Random note: I completed this song on the same day I completed Eruption. I don’t like Eruption as much, but it’s at least not terrible by my standards.

The Seventh Dance in the Series.

The Tracker's Bible

The Book of Rat, chapter 1, verses 1-9.

1.  In the beginning, Dude and Dream Scythe created Sorrow's End, and it
was not remarkable.
2.  And the two did later sit down and compose Sorrow's Return, and it was
better.
3.  And Catspaw did enjoy Sorrow's Return, and decided the potential it
bore must be exploited.  And he did write Sorrow's Redemption.
4.  And behold, the Rat team did create "Cream of the Crap."  And Catspaw
did write Sorrow's Reduction, and it sucked.
5.  But it did suck intentionally, and it was a four-channel chip song.
6.  And Catspaw did write Sorrow's Avatar, and it did kick some serious
arse.
7.  And Subliminal, who was not in the Rat team, did write Sorrow's Night.
And though it was good, the ftp.cdrom.com people did not like it that
much.
8.  And Arcturus, who was not in the Rat team, did hear Sorrow's Night and
Sorrow's Avatar.  And he did write Sorrow's Undoing.
9.  And Sorrow's Undoing was the seventh dance in the series.

Hey, you know what?  I kinda like this format:  "The Tracker's Bible."
That's what my notes are going to look like from now on.  Whaddya think?
