artist Completed December 1997.

This song is probably the one I’m most well-known for. I was never a particularly famous mod musician, but I know for a fact that a lot of people downloaded this song. Solitude surpassed Gravity as my best song at the time when I completed it, and I could probably make a case for this being my best song, period.

This song came together relatively quickly, and it was during Christmas break during my senior year of high school, so I had some time on my hands.

When I completed the song, I uploaded it to the Hornet Archive and told the rest of Shattered Fixtures about my new release. At the time, Kim’s Mod Page downloaded songs from various sources, and always selected a mod of the day from his favorite of the new uploads. To my surprise, the day after my upload, I saw that Solitude had been named mod of the day. I was obviously excited about this.

But it didn’t stop there. The next day, I saw that my song had been the top download from the Hornet Archive - probably by nature of being named mod of the day. I went from excited to thrilled.

A week or two later, I downloaded a song by another artist that was clearly inspired by mine - it used similar samples and everything. It was at this point that I knew that I had made it: you know you’re doing something right when you inspire a copycat. I was not bothered at all by the imitation, in fact, I was kind of honored by it. Probably how an up-and-coming musician feels about being parodied by Weird Al Yankovic.

I like how I structured this song, it flows nicely without becoming repetitive. The samples all work well together, and it’s not too long, either.

The samples come from various sources - the weird rezonatic sequence near the end I actually generated myself using Goldwave. The rez sample set that plays after the intro is from dreaming in green by Necros - I would later use this set again in
Unspoken Thoughts. The chords at the intro I first used in Panoramic. The airy chords that play throughout the song, starting after the main sequence begins, are probably most well-known from Siren’s song Merciful Lie, but I had gotten them from another song whose name I don’t recall. I used them previously in Flight Through the Clouds and Zustand Vortrefflichkeit . The beat loops are probably from a sample pack. And for good measure, I used my old favorite Washburn guitar lead, and this was probably the last time I used it.

This was my final song in 1997. I finished 13 songs in 1997, compared to 41 in 1996 (and I had only started tracking in May of that year). However, the increase in quality more than made up for the decrease in quantity. 1997 is the year where I put it all together and started figuring out how to make music that was actually good.
