Pray For Rain
Let's see, I believe this is my 68th song. This is the first song I've
done in 3/4 time, also. it was fairly challenging writing in that
signature, especially with the percussions. Turned out all right,
fortunately.
Don't have a heck of a lot to say. Just listen to it, dangit!

Well, this was it - my final song of the 1990’s, and my final song before a long sabbatical. In June of 1999, I left to go live in Argentina for two years with no computer or internet access. I made a few songs after I returned, but they were few and far-between. This song effectively marked the end of my tracking career. It’s too bad the Hornet Archive was closed - I ended up only sending it to a few select individuals on the internet, and I never gave it a widespread release until several years later on the Mod Archive.
The song is inspired by the final piece of music from Chrono Trigger, “For Good Friends.” It was Chrono Trigger music that got me into tracking in the first place, so it’s a nice sentimental touch that this song would be inspired by the end music of Chrono Trigger. Actually, it was inspired by two Chrono Trigger songs, the other being Schala’s theme - in fact, the first sample you hear in this song is one that I got from a mod version of Schala’s theme.
This may be my only song that is not at a 4/4 time signature. Or at least, most of it isn’t - the first half of the song is at a 3/4 signature, but it transitions to a 4/4 with a lot of triplets at the end.
The song’s title has an unusual origin: it was the name of a play you could select in Joe Montana Football for the Sega Game Gear. I thought it could be a good song title, but the song itself has nothing to do with football. It’s kind of a two-parter, the first half I try to convey a sense of desperation / determination to get rainfall to happen, and then after that a more celebratory feeling after the rainfall occurs. I did not use any samples to make the sound of rainfall or any other weather-related sound.
Overall, this song is pretty good by my standards, and I would include it among my best works. There are a few things about this song that I’m not satisfied with, namely much of the song - the introduction in particular - is too sparse. But in spite of this, it was still better than most of my other work, with only Ascension and Solitude rivaling it. My next song, Leaving it All Behind, was easily better, but that one didn’t come until 2001.
This song marked the end of an era for me, as I never really returned to tracking in earnest. It is unlikely that I will ever return to making music with the same zeal that I did before. I wasn’t done entirely, of course - I made three more mods in IT format after this one (as of 2021), and I may yet make more. Not to mention a song I made in Renoise. So I definitely wouldn’t say my tracking days are over, but now that I have a job, a mortgage, and a family, my time spent available to do tracking is limited.
For me, whenever I listen to this song, I smile and fondly remember my time of making music from 1996-1999.
