artist Composed in August 1996. The title is meaningless.

This one is weird. It has no discernable melody, holds on to the initial flute note for far too long, and an inexplicable lack of percussion.

Well, the lack of percussion is actually explicable. You see, this song was an entry into a local compo whose name I do not recall. It was held on R-Squared, our local BBS in the Olympia area. I believe the contest was being run by The Wurm, whose name I recall but otherwise I have little recollection of him (I made reference to him in the comments of We Will Not Go Quietly). The idea behind the contest was for everybody entering to submit a sample, and then you had to compose a song consisting of only the samples submitted. My sample was the weird organ chord (from Equinox by Ratz). I don’t recall exactly who contributed the rest of the samples, but I think the Washburn guitar lead was from Subliminal and the boingy sound was either from Wurkir or Kalanaras. Only one percussion sample was included: A closed hi-hat. That’s not much to work with.

I didn’t know what to do with many of these samples, including my own (I should have submitted something more flexible). So, I wrote most of the tune around the Washburn guitar. It resulted in something...strange and not very listenable. I obviously really liked using the Gxx “glide to note” effect, and employed it liberally.

I don’t think this compo was ever concluded and the judging did not take place. I think I may have heard one other person’s entry song, but that was it. I think the number of people who submitted songs was extremely low. So, while perhaps thinking I could get any votes for first place was optimistic, perhaps I could have won by default?

But let’s be real, this song is weird and not very good, so any victory would have been pyrrhic. The good news is, this was the last of my really bad songs - I did not compose any songs worse than this one afterward. Also, this is the rare song that was not uploaded by me to Mod Archive, so somebody from R-Squared had apparently downloaded this song and either uploaded it to Mod Archive themselves, or distributed it somewhere else which resulted in somebody else uploading it.

Okay, this is a pretty cool
albeit weird song! I don't
know if anybody is going to
vote for it for first place
but I had to get this done
in a hurry because I'm
going on vacation next
