Sampling / Re: Good sources for samples
« on: August 10, 2007, 15:59:50 »
Thanks for putting up the Iowa link -- I can't believe I was so lazy as to not take the five seconds to find it again.  Anyway, I think making multi-sampled instruments from that collection, while possible, would be a massive task.  The samples themselves are not always in tune, they need to be normalized and trimmed properly (and looped), the attacks tend to be different, etc.  By the way, this isn't meant to be overly critical, I think the Iowa people did us all a wonderful service by making these available and I use them frequently.  I'm just not sure they were thinking about people making soundfonts, etc. from them in 1997(?).  I think the reeds are pretty good.

Jojo -- you're right, the Waveworld collection is great, too.  When I use those, I usually use Audacity to find the pitch and tune them, though, just because they aren't always labeled very well.

Does anyone have any idea if it's OK to post a mod with commercial samples?  Obviously you can tell people in the comments, sample titles, etc. not to rip them, but I wouldn't want to get in trouble for spreading copyrighted samples all over the web.

If you're looking to buy some basic, quality 16 bit, 44.1 samples try the Samplefusion CDs.  (www.samplefusion.com) They're pretty inexpensive.  I bought the orchestral one -- it's a mixed bag, but not bad for the price.  The University of Iowa has a free classical sample collection of just about every instrument in the orchestra playing scales.  Again, they're old and in .aif format, but some are very usable with a little modification.  I have also bought the Producer's Vault DVD from Electronisounds -- tons of good stuff there.

The only problem with commercial samples is that I'm not sure if it's OK to post them in a mod where they can be ripped.  Since I'm starting to publicly put up music in mod format now, I find myself more and more using samples that I'm sure are public domain or that I've made myself.

Hope that helps.

Look what I made! / Re: Teh m0d filez

Just posted a comment on the new one.  Your amiga (or amiga-emulated?) tunes are really nice miniatures.  People don't really compose much like this anymore.  A lot of attention to detail in a short space of time.

Anyway, I got a chance to actually do some modarchive-listening today and posted a few comments.  Then I just saw that I can do reviews now, too.  Oh well, I'll get to that next time around.  It's sort of hit and miss, but I like to at least let people know their material is being heard.

Pretty cool stuff.  I've got all all of the ahx files on my machine now.  Amiga tracking seems like a very specific art form, and you've really got it down.

I'd write a review, but I can't seem to get into my artist account.  I'll check to see if I have my password right when I get home.

The Lobby / Re: Converting XM/MOD to MIDI and using as ringtone??

MPT (modplug tracker) can export mods as midi files.  I've played around with this, and if you look in the technical documents section of the modplug forums you'll find a description of how to set up your mod for midi export.  (Written by yours truly after much experimentation.)  In my case, I was looking for an export accurate enough to import the midi into a notation editor.

Website News Archive / Another Magazine appearance?
« on: June 19, 2007, 21:07:07 »
Computer Music has a regular (very short) column on trackers.  I buy the magazine occasionally, but missed the laptop one -- sorry.  I did buy the tracker issue, but for those of you who know enough to be on this forum already there's probably not a lot of new information there.

Look what I made! / Give a listen to your Moderator's Music
« on: June 19, 2007, 21:01:48 »
After listening through m0d's ahx files on the archive, I went and clicked on his outside website.  He has some really awesome music up there.  I downloaded several of the mp3s.  "Escape from Marwinia" and "Return to Marwinia" (the most recent ones, I think) are particularly good.

It's nice to hear a few longer pieces that work as a true listening experience.  There's a very, very high level of craftsmanship.  For those of you that require comparisons, I'd say it's sort of Classical meets Celtic meets Emerson-Lake and Palmer.

Anyway, I'm fairly certain trackers weren't involved much, if at all, in those songs (though I've guessed wrong there before), and that's why they're not on the archive.  Nonetheless, if you listen to them, you won't be disappointed.

(No -- I'm not trying to ingratiate myself with the moderator.  The music is really good.)

Look what I made! / reviewing the W-Files?

What a great change of pace!  I've listened to one of the reggae pieces and am listening to a dixieland piece right now.  I'm downloading the rest of your stuff for later.

Your stuff brought a smile to my face.  I'll try to post a comment or two when I've had a chance to listen to the rest.  Nice use of different instruments.  The effects you used with the dixieland piece fit in perfectly.  The organ in the reggae number I heard sounds very authentic.

Listened to all four -- kilobyte was the best.  Comment posted.  Lots of fun.

Comment posted on "Winter," which I liked rather a lot.  There are some very, very nice sections to that piece.  I also thought the "Can-Can" was a lot of fun.  I liked your more mellow tunes better, but as noted in the comment, I think it takes too long to get to the good stuff.  You are obviously quite capable of writing chord progressions and changing keys, but a song like "Farewell" uses the same pattern over and over (and over) again.  Even there, though, I have to say I liked the sound, and the middle section was good.  I like the fact that you changed the key when returning to the first pattern.  While me telling people to write shorter songs is the pot calling the kettle black to some extent, I think you either need to make things less repetitious in your ambient pieces or shorten the songs.

These are just my thoughts, and it doesn't mean I didn't like listening -- I really did.  Thanks for the music.
