PlayerPro will read Impulse Tracker modules created with ModPlug that contain VST(i)? I don't think so, but if I'm wrong on this I apologize.

Well, you didn't exactly say that it had to be a ModPlug generated IT, just a module with VST. But that's true, PlayerPro basicly bugs with IT in general, me thinks, but at least it works. But who cares, that's not the discussion in this topic. :)

Modplug does it, at least for IT files.
The "classic" ModPlug saves IT files with version number "2.00", the original IT saves them with "2.14", "2.16" or wathever - so basically every module that has the module version "2.00" is a classic modplug module.
OpenMPT however has another version number, WinAmp (BASS plugin, of course) displays "8.88". So there is a way to distinguish between Trackers. I don't know about the XM format, though.

I see, but a version number is rather cryptic. Does IT not have a string of text as a header? That's a shame. And I believe that some IT generated IT modules actually use the 2.00 version number (early BETA versions probably), so the version number is not a guarantee. But I see your point.

Compatibility does not restrict creativity, Saga. Not in any way at all. However, a module format that is not supposed to be able to use VST, should not be able to use VST. If such a thing is to be implemented, it has to be done in a new format, or there must be a header to indicate which version of the format to use. If ModPlug did this, there would not be any problems.

Oh, and Pailes, I must correct you on your VST statement. There are actually players that support VSTs in modules. I don't know how many, but PlayerPro allows for VSTs, both on MacOS Classic and X. It also happens to come with a bunch of VSTs to my happy happiness and has a bunch of standard VSTs allowed in the PlayerPro custom format (A very versatile format. Too bad the tracker is not working too great. But the sequencer works pretty OK.). :)

(Just noticed Pailes replied the moment I pressed "reply".)

Hmm, OK. Yeah, this made my post pretty obsolete. :>

EDIT: Oh, and I believe Renoise, although Renoise is not a player, allows for VSTs on MacOS X.

OK, mystery is solved. Cheers!

Modules were never meant to support VSTs and have never been. If you use VST:s, then don't distribute the module. Distribute an MP3.

For goodness sake, how obvious is not it? VST:s are programs, programs only works on their intended platform. Modules however are distributed and supposed to work dependless on their platform and player.

And Saga, there are a whole lot of people who use IT to listen to .IT modules. I don't know why you defend the inconvenience, well, "mess" that ModPlug created. The only thing it does is cause us all problem, both for the composer and the listener. It's like defending the W3C incompatibility of Internet Explorer 6 just because a lot of people use it.

And since I use ModPlug Tracker regularly, I know bloody well all it's problems and strengths enough to be pissed off by all this, especially as it always means I have to tweak my modules afterhand to make them sound acceptable in other players and trackers. Bah!

The Lobby / Remember the first time?
« on: May 31, 2007, 11:35:15 »
The first mod I ever heard was my own, dunlending.it... and it sucked - bad. I probably caught on pretty quickly how to use ModPlug Tracker (just took 2 minutes actually for me to figure out the basics, I think), but it's obvious that my early 2004-2005 modules were all, well, crap.

The first mod that I didn't make myself that I heard were probably a bunch of module soundtracks from old school classics on the Amiga like Blues Brothers and a few others (I forget).

Basicly, my personal tracking biography is pretty dull...

EDIT: Remembered the names of the games.

Oh, and how did I find out about trackers to begin with? It's quite a dull story, too. I wanted to make my own music for my games and found my old tools to be rather inadequate (MS-Sound Recorder, my Yamaha PSR-280 and a microphone on the speakers. I also did some stuff by fiddling about with my voice, which can be heard in my oldest games).

I asked my friends about if they knew any free program that could make music and my friend Tony (Chunitana) told me that ModPlug Tracker was good. I asked another friend later over MSN who also appeared to be tracking for some samples and he gave me a few .XI instruments, I loaded them up and got going. The result after half an hour of tracking: dunlending.it - A fairly bad, partially out-of-beat drum and bass tune (the bass melody was pretty OK, though, the drums were incorrectly timed in two patterns by 1/16 or 1 row).

Awesome m0d! You have done it again! :hrrhrr:

Cheers, have a beer.

Tracking / raw data -> .wav batch conversion?
« on: May 25, 2007, 08:38:25 »
Well, isn't it just as simple as using a Tracker for this purphose? ModPlug Tracker can load IFF samples and then save them as WAV with no sample rate or bitrate conversion.

On another note, I'm working on touching up the goodie old ST-01 samples, so stick around and you may get your samples in 44,100 16-bit format and reverb and other things I've used to "boost" these old goodies. Of course, they remain the same samples more or less. :D

MilkyPlay / can someone do mod player for my pocket?
« on: May 25, 2007, 08:33:37 »
MilkyTracker is available on some PDA systems, amoung them Windows CE or whatever it's called. I think Pailes may be developing the Tracker for more handheld platforms, too.

The Lobby / Artist Interviews
« on: May 21, 2007, 16:35:53 »
That's alright. I don't exactly how much time right now, but I could always schedule some interviews for TMA. Although, I could need some ideas what I'm supposed to interview about, first. I mean, obviously I could need some good questions to start with like "how long have you been composing", "what's your current job".

Tracking / Creating chiptunes with modern trackers
« on: May 20, 2007, 08:06:05 »
Well, the actual chip genre has its history from old school computers like the C64 and their SID chip, or the NES sound chip and so on. So basically, sample-based track music is just a mimic. Kind of like when I use PC Speaker samples in a single channel IT to simulate the sound of Pulse Tracker (my own tracker under development).

As a result, what Zovik says ends up as a pretty good description of what modern chipping is all about. With sample-based chipping, we also start to get closer to technically minimalistic music.
