Tracking / Tracking on your mobile/PDA, revisited
« on: December 07, 2009, 00:57:32 »
I remembered the old topic on tracker music for your cell phone, but it has not been posted in since last january. The reason why I'm reopening this topic, is that I have received (read: bought) a great Nokia E71 with lots of storage capacity and java compatibility, so does anyone perchance know any updates on trackers for your mobile?

Or would the full tracker package work just fine?

Tracking / Re: Tips on drum track
« on: December 05, 2009, 02:25:24 »
now, I realise this is an older topic, but since I'm a drummer, and therefore pay extra attention to my drum tracks, I thought I'd share how I do it:

In regular 4/4 pop music the snare always comes on the 2nd and 4th beat, and a kick drum on the first (what you do with your kick after the first beat is entirely up to you). The hihats fill every count, or the eights. That's a basic pop drum pattern, which I'll try to show:

|: one and two and three and four and  :| (beat)
|:  H    h     H    h     H     h     H    h    :| (hihat)
|:  K                                                 :| (kick)
|:               S                         S         :| (Snare)

A standard pop/rock rhythm that has been copied millions of times (in fact I've played it about 100x tonight) is

|: one and two and three and four and  :| (beat)
|:  H    h     H    h     H     h     H    h    :| (hihat)
|:  K                        K     K                :| (kick)
|:               S         s    s        S          :| (Snare)

I always imagine how I'd be playing it in real life. A realistic drum never sounds the same twice. Tone and volume vary constantly. That's what I try to put in my drum tracks (of course I'm too lazy to tweak every note to my liking, but you can do it per pattern)

One mistake I often see/hear in tracker music is the fact that hihats and cymbals are severely underestimated. You have to see it this way: if they really were of lesser use, then why haven't drummers all over the world expelled the cymbals from their kits a long time ago? Why do orchestras still use that 'ridiculous' instrument called the Triangle? because it adds that little extra. It is the cream on your cake. The nipple on a breast  ;D.
I do not even like the sound of my own drum kit, because the cymbals sound ugly. They spoil my playing pleasure. Your choice of cymbal affects the overall sound of your song. A Crash gives extra impact, a Ride gives a smooth edge, etc. I'm not going into all the musical stuff because that list is endless...

The Lobby / Re: What sequencing (or DAW) software do you use?
« on: December 05, 2009, 01:43:44 »
I use Fruity Loops Studio 5. I started with FL 3.56 or something, and kept updating till I got 5, and then I realised I used the newer versions for the same purpose as the older versions, so I stopped updating. I have tried Renoise, but I'm so attached to MPT1.16, I keep coming back to it. The OpenMPT is simply too open for me. I can't get my head around it; if I want to start tracking, I do not want to have to set up my complete tracker before I can get a single note down.
I also tried Cubase, but I got completely lost.

Look what I made! / Ambient/Orchestral (Youtube)
« on: November 24, 2009, 00:26:52 »
I made this a couple of years ago and never found it worh uploading, until I discovered some new samples. I applied them on the old song, and here's the result:

Wow, dat klinkt echt goed. Inderdaad leuke syncopatie erin. Hoe kom je aan je geluiden? Schrijf je muziek met Finale, of Sibelius of iets dergelijks en zitten daar van die fijne soundfonts bij?

Hm. I assumed, based on your name, that you are Dutch or Flemish. If you didn't understand what I wrote, just ask for a translation.

The Lobby / Re: Coffee!
« on: April 01, 2009, 02:11:19 »
yeah just one regular mug-full (two cups) of coffee takes about 5 minutes to make, and 5 minutes to drink. We have an old D.E. coffeemaker, so old there are hardly any pictures of it on the internet, which makes the coffeemaking process a rite of its own. It only has 2 knobs.  :azn:

We also have a Senseo, but I hate it for the laziness it evokes in others which makes them deny me a proper coffee, I hate it for its styled shape, its ugly and unfitting name, the limited quantities, the humming sound it makes, the foam it puts on my coffee, but most of all, that taste, or rather, distaste! I can't believe people actually like that bocht, as we call tasteless liquid substances in Dutch.  >:(

edit:
sorry, got carried away there... my point is, just use a regular coffeemaker as depicted above, and if you use a special coffee scoop to put the coffee powder in the filter, let it have a little "head" of powder on top. One scoop per two cups, and if you want two cups, put in the water a little over the mark on the outside. Good coffee needs a while to seep through, to properly pick up on the aroma on the way down. But if you're in a hurry, use the "more than two cups"-mode of the machine, if it has any.

Alright, so it's been a while.
I've actually uploaded the Austrian folksong that I mentioned here earlier (which isn't austrian, but slovenian as I found out) and did some swing things.
Is there anyone willing, able and interested in commenting on (one of) my last 3 songs?

wltrs_-_tribute_to_slavko.xm

wltrs_-_bliss.xm

wltrs_-_jinglejazz.xm

They received a fair share of downloads, but nobody has taken up the task of commenting on them yet. I'd be very grateful if you did.
Thanks in advance.
