I checked in on the Milkytracker website today -- I'm just starting with Linux on a few old machines, and wanted to get the Milkytracker tarball to try to install.  Anyway, I hope it comes back up soon.

I sometimes use two little programs from www.hermannseib.com -- vsthost and savihost.  Savihost, in particular is a great little standalone player for a single VSTi with an audio recorder.  You can then pull up the recording in Audacity or Wavosaur (both free) for editing.  In particular, Wavosaur lets you set loop points with cross-fades, so you can avoid clicking.

Vsthost is modular program that will let you add effects, etc.  Great free little tools.

Well, since there aren't too many people posting their music here, I thought I'd put this out and see what people thought of it.  It's sort of a classical chip tune, about 3 minutes long.  The .it file is here (only 61kb).

Nice atmospheric piece.  The pads are cool and menacing.  There are parts of the piece that reminded me of listening to the synth loops in Who's Next.  Some of the drum parts actually reminded me a little of my high school marching band days -- that's not meant to be negative, I thought the drum patterns were pretty cool.

I didn't always feel like there was much in the way of structure to the song, but I enjoyed it.

I only discovered trackers in the last few years, so don't feel bad.  They are the most efficient way of writing music on a computer (I think).  I really don't know much about the whole demoscene thing, but the tracking community seems pretty active to me.

What do I track with?  Mostly Open MPT (Modplug), but I also use MilkyTracker on occasion, since it works well on many different platforms and has a nice, compact GUI.  (Finally, something that works right on old Win98 machines.)  I also have used Psycle, and even Buzz.

I'm listening now.  Honestly, I'm not a big trance fan, but I've frankly been pretty impressed by the radio-quality sound people seem to get making these tracks.  Yours is very good and wouldn't be out of place on say XM radio's "The System."  I like the flutey pad part -- it makes for a nice contrast.

Also, to be fair about modules versus mp3s, modplug, renoise, psycle, etc., all support Vst effects and instruments and I think you can be a tracker without sticking to the old formats.  (Of course, what's nice about the old formats is that everyone gets to see and share.)  In addition, if you're using commercial samples where one stereo pad could be a megabyte, the mp3 will likely be smaller than the module.  (That's why the stuff at my signature link isn't on modarchive.)

There's room for both methods, of course, and there is definitely a feeling of satisfaction to creating a small file size module that sounds good with your own samples, where everyone can see what you've done.

I'm listening now -- a very cool track.  As good as any dance track I've heard, although I'm way too old to know what the kids are dancing to these days.  I'm always a sucker for those 808ish leads, so I enjoyed those moments.

My only criticism is more related to the genre than the actual track -- I tend to prefer music with melody and chord changes and the occasional break in the beat.  Still, the production is very good.  (I suppose Ceekayed's point about a bit of muddiness in the low mids may be right, but that's getting pretty darn picky and it's easily fixed in any case.)  If I compared this against any commercial trance track, I'd probably like this just as well or better.  I'm sure it would sound good in a club, but I haven't been close to one of those in ages.

ChibiTracker Bug Reports / Can't load a sample

OK--

I really like the looks of this program, but when I tried to load a sample nothing showed up.  Is there any way to just play the sample from the sample editor?
