Look what I made! / Strangeness, no, just terrible. My first mod.

I made this in 1993 (still datestamped 4/30/1993). The purpose was only to advertise the board. I was a teenager interested in the tracker and just ripped most of the samples, discovering quickly different sources were in different keys.. but, the clash seemed to work for me in the autistic depressive mood I spent most of my time in, so I didn't try to correct it. Only two samples are mine, the piano (stock from my Yamaha DX100) and the clean guitar was a custom wave generated on the Yamaha to match my Guild S400D electric guitar, and it was damned near identical. Unfortunately I couldn't record more than a second at 8-bit without "puc-puc-puc-puc" noise... I was really disappointed because that guitar sound, now lost to time, was several hours tweaking all 4 ops to get the harmonic twang just right across to eventual fade, I would need a good 5 seconds to get the full loop, but alas... that's why those samples are so short anyway.  It was written across 3 days of manual tracking, and it's pretty obvious which section was which day.

I uploaded it to area boards the next day but it never spread out of southern New Hampshire (gee, I wonder why). I'm including it here for nothing more than historical reference. My board disappeared off the official BBS list after it was crashed in early 1996, so it didn't make the final list and the textfiles(dot)com guys have yet to acknowledge my existence. Due to a Comcast account configuration error, my old EarthLink page just got frozen locked out and presumed marked for removal, this is pretty much what I have left to offer the world of my school age days.

So, here it is. My absolutely terrible compilation that has no genre and only works if you're in one of those moods.. titled, "Strangeness."

Well, I can't know if the STM is the original original, but it's certainly more original than the converted mod. Most STM2MOD conversions that went bad just had bad samples, I could pull them, flip the bytes, reinsert the corrected samples, and all was peachy. This one was special because there were a few timing errors, a couple notes had to be corrected, and I never did find the right loop points (which makes the STM file superior).

Only a couple other conversions gave me half as much trouble.. Kefren's Funky (shortened some silent space at the beginning to match song timing, on top of sample fixes) and "Labyrinth" which had a similar problem. Funny thing, I recently found a STM of Labyrinth and it was missing the entire opening SFX sequence... that kind of thing sounds more like a mod to stm handy job to me than this*, but, whatever. I stopped being active after my BBS was crashed in 96 and I had a baby which took my primary focus, so I'm sure you've seen much more of this stuff than I.

Anyway, all that withstanding, I gave you the closest to original I have, so maybe people will actually enjoy the tune now. :)

* Edit: I just looked up your copy of Labyrinth.sfx.2 , and it that seems confirmed... I fully believe your copy is the true original of that one.

Edit 2: OMG I totally didn't see you had a link in there. Well, that's embarrassing.. on a brighter note, I now (once again) fully agree with you. I just really need to slow down sometimes. I wonder what else I can find actual original MODs of..

I agree with you, and through the modern magic that is ZXTune (despite some minor rendering qualms), I actually found it on AMP.

I have a mod I fixed after a bad STM2MOD conversion (STM2MOD often forgot to flip PC audio bytes into Amiga audio) back in the 90's, which you have the raw botched conversion of (don't ask me why or how, I was hoping you had the original STM version, but alas). Who do I contact to get you the fixed version?
