Effects on 1st 'tick'...
« on: June 25, 2008, 16:31:22 »

Hi there!
I've read on the FTII documentation (in the PDF I've found on MilkyTracker website) that "When using a command FT2 will use the first tick to play the note and the following ticks for effect."
... and then explains that effect 'A0F' will slide volume down of a value = 0x0F on tick 1,2,... but not on tick 'zero', the tick where the note is played. So it means that if SPD is 3, the volume will be lowered twice (and not three times).

So, if all that is correct, my doubts are:
1st: what about effect Cxx? It should work from the 0th tick - or the sample will start to a different volume and then change in the 1st tick?
2nd: what about having some A01 on different lines? Will the volume be lowered on the 0th tick of the next lines or not? If not, won't the volume be lowered in an 'irregular' manner?
3rd: does the "volume column effects" (like +x, -x, >x, <x ) work the same?

Any help will be appreciated :) (and sorry for my English...)

Ciao!

1. "Set" type commands become effective immediately on tick 0, so that goes for Cxx, 8xx and such.

2. & 3. I don't think the following rows are handled any differently so I'd say yes, it's irregular and these per tick commands work just the same on volume column.

Thanks for the answer!

That's good :)

2. & 3. I don't think the following rows are handled any differently so I'd say yes, it's irregular and these per tick commands work just the same on volume column.

Mmm... I'm going to check if it's so with MilkyTracker... anyway if it's so then it means that if I want the volume to increase/decrease regularly I should add a volume value in the volume column beside the use of Axx effect...

Well, I'll let you know after the tests. Thanks!

Ciao :)

Well, I've done a little test and it's as you said.

I wrote that:
Code: [Select]
C-4 .1 .. C40
... .. .. A08
... .. .. A08
... .. .. A08
... .. .. A08
then I tried playing it with Spd=2, then with Spd=1 and Spd=3 (in MilkyTracker)

With Spd=2 the note started and then its volume was lowered -of course- but not to zero. With Spd=1 I didn't hear any change in the volume, with Spd=3 the volume was lowered to 0 (8 x 2 tick x 4 times = 64 ...)

So I guess now that Axx effect really works only when tick is not zero. :)

Then... what about the other effects? Panning slide -for instance- I guess will work the same as Axx, but will 'fine slide' work on tick=1 only OR will it work on tick=0 (since they're not repeated once per tick...) as the 'Set' (Cxx & 8xx) effect?

Thanks once more :)

Ciao!

It's true. Spd 1 makes a lot of stuff useless but this is according to specification and there's nothing to fix there.

Fine slides work per row, so it doesn't matter that a row contains only tick 0.

I know it work per row, I was wondering if the fine slide would anyway 'happen' on tick #1, thus making also fine slides useless when Spd=1. But I made another little test (with MilkyTracker) and I noticed that the volume fine slide "happens" on tick 0.

I did that (where 'D' means arrow down):
Code: [Select]
C-4 .1 40 ...
... .. DF ...
... .. DF ...
... .. DF ...
... .. DF ...
... .. D4 ...
and the note slides to volume 0, even when Spd=1.

Ciao :)

That's what I meant, I made the test too. ;) But maybe I wasn't clear enough.
