NitroTracker Compo #1
« on: December 24, 2008, 18:30:34 »

Ok, since the other Comp #1 was a complete failure, I (through mocrey's suggestion) have decided to close it and start up a new first comp. This comp has a Christmas/holidays theme, in which you should remix ONE of these songs:

  • Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
  • The Twelve Days of Christmas
or
  • Silent Night

You can choose to remix more than one if you really want to, but, you can only submit one for judging.

The rules are as follows:

1. Enter a song based on the theme suggested. (You must host the song for download in the XM format)
2. Give songs entered in the comp 1 to 5 based on these criteria:
  • Originality
  • Continuity/"Flow"
  • Sample Range (as in the range of the samples used)
  • Length (with consideration to if it helps or detracts from the song's over all value)
  • Ending (as in how does the ending affect the song: good closing, bad closing?)
You should give reasons for your score, no matter how brief.
3. Add all these together to get the final score out of 25.
4. You cannot score your own song.
5. You may only submit one song.
6. You should give an honest opinion when submitting your scores.

Anyone can score these songs as long as you have actually listened to them.

I'm extending the deadline.

So, GET THESE SUBMISSIONS IN BEFORE JANUARY 21 IF YOU WANT THEM TO BE JUDGED.

THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED.

Your NitroTracker community compo idea is great.

However, as an ex. compo hoster myself, my advice to you is set your deadlines much much farther into the future. The aparent failure of your first attempt highlighted the fact people aren't as go-go-go-compo perhaps as much as they used to be, and giving them only a week to respond or so is crazy on a fairly quiet forum (and to make it even more bizzare - in the middle of the seasonal festivities which usually mean people can't be around to get on the forum and read your post!)

The barryvan compo, for example, has difficulty getting competitors, beside the fact it is advertised and promoted across a wide variety of sites (including Mod Archive) and forums, but it succeeds because of it's reputation being spread over the time it's been promoted. However this is not to say that you cannot organise a successful compo at short notice.

The fast compos (aka One hour compos/OHCs) on IRC (chat) are spontaneous and give just 1 hour to complete a tune with a provided sample pack. This might be something you could take onboard to attract competitors...

For instance, provide a premade small sample pack as an XM file and instructions/rules that state no new samples may be added, but loop points and sample reduction is acceptable. Give a few weeks to let the news filter to those that only visit the NT forums once in a while. You never know, you might begin a trend/regular compo for those budding NitroTracker users out there like yourself, heck, you could get more people involved in the NitroTracker chat room and spontaneously organise compos with those with you in the dead of the night!

:)

Thanks for the advice, because I was thinking the same. About the deadline anyway. I'm not too much of an IRC man myself (heck I don't even know what to download or how to even find the channel let alone client for your guys' channel...any pointers/advice?...please?...) but I could try that idea, given enough prodding...

I'll extend this to the middle of January so that it has enough time to get around, and I'll change the songs to maybe two and not only a seasonal selection.

EDIT: Screw it, the song selection stays the same, because I don't want to find none seasonal songs that someone could remix properly, plus, my knowledge base of techno/electronic songs/artists is very, very limited.

I will sticky this topic then.

About IRC, it's not to everyone's taste, it involves a lot of idling, the NitroTracker channel is in it's infancy and to be honest has seen little in the way of support from the majority of the community - I hope that changes.

To get there, you need an IRC client. Now, you could opt for the easy method and use the built in Java IRC applet on modarchive.org, Join the chat room there and you can then issue the /join #nitrotracker from the text input. Please note that in order to join other channels than #modarchive (which is default) you must log into modarchive.org as a member.

Alternatively, download mIRC from www.mirc.com, or XChat from www.xchat.org and set it up to connect to irc.esper.net, port 6667

You then need to do the same as in the java client, which is issue /join #nitrotracker.

You will be pleased to know that esper.net hosts (as a result of #modarchive existing there) other tracking channels. #milkytracker, #renoise, #mod_shrine (one hour compo fanatics), #botb and of course #nitrotracker.

I advertised this also on the front of The Mod Archive website. Hope you get some takers, you should also post a shot in the Events & Compos forum, so that it appears in peoples RSS readers.

Do I just make a new topic and it'll update the RSS or can you explain to me otherwise (not extremely tech oriented here)?
