VLC Player
« on: January 19, 2009, 03:40:36 »

I went looking for players that could export out to Mp3 so I can play the tracktunes on my various mp3 players. Just to get going, I stumbled onto VLC player.

However, that interface for conversion is clunky at best, and it doesn't skin smoothly on my machine either.

I already use DeliPlayer for routine playing. Anyone have favorite utilities for power conversion of tracks into Mp3?

XMPlay can export to WAV or an MP3/Ogg Vorbis encoder :)

I think I got it this time. I remember though why I didn't like XMplayer last time I tried a couple years ago.

There seems to be a weird effect where if the resolution is set to 24 bit it comes out all scratchy. Setting it back to 16 bit seems to be fine. I also didn't know to look for new skins either.

XMPlay. Not XMPlayer. It's XMPlay. :P

I wonder if you're using waveout in 24bit resolution or directx, or maybe asio? you can post the problem about the 24bit resolution (which is IMHO unnecessary for playing audio anyway, it will be upsampled by either the soundcard or the application) in the xmplay forums and they will most likely be fixed.

Heh, I walked into that famous spelling typo. It's 'cause I used DeliPlay*ER* for too long.

But the good news is that I think XM' has unseated it. Deli was solid enough, but it doesn't export (easily, if at all) to Mp3, and that's my killer process lately.

Also, It's nice to uprade the skin. Deli had a passable black one, but I missed the old WinAmp type skins. Acidian Fire - flare is my new favorite.

In all, a nice start to 2009!

Well if you still have winamp too, you may use the "Nullsoft Disk Writer" output plug-in to get a .wav file, and then convert it to mp3 (or .ogg or pretty much anything else) with whichever converter you like. That's not a direct conversion method, but still works fine.

Never. ever. use. Winamp. for. MODs.
Seriously. At least use the BASS plugin for Winamp if you don't have it already. The default plugin, MikMod, is pure crap.

If I can go out on a limb here, how well does VLC handle mods?

@poguemahon, it's a crapfest.

EDIT: Checked the sources, libmodplug is used.
