Looking to ID "Oriental" MOD
« on: October 05, 2009, 09:29:07 »

For many years I have wanted to locate the true name of a MOD I once downloaded from an emulation site (called The Emu Realm or something of the sort - it was a big ROM site at one point years back.) The site owner, from what I recall, said the MODs he hosted were all his own compositions but I am not sure about that because the only one of his MODs I was able to track down was a remix of Sunbeam's Outside World that was credited to someone other than the site owner.

The track in question starts off with a simple rendition of whatever stereotypical Chinese song is used at the beginning of The Vapors' song Turning Japanese. It then breaks down into a dancey sort of track, still playing the Asian jingle but also "harmonizing" with itself. It was called Orient Express on the site where I saw it, but I haven't found anything of that title on Mod Archive.

Apologies if my description isn't very descriptive...it's been ten years (most likely) since I last heard it. Anyone have any possibilities with other titles?

Thanks!

Hmm, tricky one. The only tracks that would come to my mind:
orient expression by travolta - not much orient in it, though...
orientxpression by StereoMan - this misses the "dance" part, though.

Do you recall anymore details, i.e. how many channels were approx. used, what format was it, etc?

Thanks for the suggestions! :)

Unfortunately, I've already heard the first one, and while it's the closest thing to what I'm looking for, it's still only has a passing similarity to the track in question. The second one unfortunately isn't very close at all.

From what I recall, although I could be totally out to lunch on this, the format was mod or xm (although for all I know it could have been s3m or it as well, but I can pretty much 100% assert that it wasn't any format more exotic than those.)

For more information on the "stereotypical asian" melody the track was built around, see here: http://ask.metafilter.com/16201/Where-did-stereotypical-Asian-music-come-from (probably doesn't really help anyone at all, but at least identifies the specific riff.)

Thanks again for the help, I cannot express how exciting it would be to hear this track ten years later after a hard drive crash and the hosting ROM site shutting down!

You could try here http://amp.dascene.net/home.php

Use the Quick Search option, searching for mod name and use "orient"...

Lists a few.
